Greetings!

DCCF LogoAs he often did during his presidency, John Kennedy took a Thanksgiving day so many years ago to challenge us as a nation.  He said that "as we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."

What does it mean to live a life of gratitude?  How does one truly give thanks for all that he or she has?

I'm no philosopher, but I think it begins with a spirit of generosity.  I don't mean simply writing a check to charity - although that certainly can do a lot of good.  A spirit of generosity compels us to share the greatest gifts we have.

Maybe it means giving of our friendship to our neighbors, using our labor to build a better world, and sharing our resources with those in need.  In essence, we should remember to love one another.

Chances are that if you're one of the thousands of people who receive this email, you're already giving generously of yourself.

On behalf of the community we all love - Door County - please accept our deepest gratitude on this day of thanks.

Donor Advised Funds - an Exceptional Year-End Planning Tool
Would your tax situation benefit from a year-end charitable gift but you don't know where to give it?  Consider using a Donor Advised Fund at the Door County Community Foundation.

At its most basic, a Donor Advised Fund is a simpler, cheaper, and more tax-efficient alternative to creating your own private foundation.  You make a contribution to your Fund and Generous Manreceive an immediate tax deduction for your generosity.  The Community Foundation then administers your Fund and makes distributions to the charities you suggest in your family's name.

Donor Advised Funds are also excellent vehicles for those families who wish to participate together in the tradition of philanthropy for generations to come.

That's what differentiates the Community Foundation from other philanthropic options.  We offer a high degree of personalized service for our donors.  The Community Foundation routinely works with families (and their attorneys, accountants and investment managers) to design a gift plan that fits your unique financial situation and addresses the issues you care about most.

And by giving through your own personal Donor Advised Fund, you maximize both the tax benefit of your contribution as well as its impact by tapping into the Community Foundation's in-depth knowledge of local issues.

If you need a year-end tax deduction, or have been thinking about establishing a private foundation, talk with your estate planning professional about the advantages of creating a Donor Advised Fund at the Door County Community Foundation.  Or just contact the Community Foundation directly at (920) 746-1786.  You'll be glad you did!
2010 College Scholarship Applications Now Available
The Door County Community Foundation is honored to administer several scholarships for the benefit of the young adults of Door County.  We encourage students to first speak with their school's guidance office.  Many of the Community Foundation's scholarships are administered in partnership with Door County schools and decisions as to the recipients are made there by school professionals.

However, there are a handful of scholarships in which the selection process is independent of local schools.  Applications for the following scholarships are available on the Community Foundation's website:

The Bill & Yvonne Boettcher Golf Scholarship was created to provide educational opportunities for promising young students from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.  The scholarship(s) will be awarded to a Sturgeon Bay High School senior with a demonstrated financial need for their first year of post-secondary education.  The applicant must have Scholarship Studentmaintained at least a "B" average throughout high school and been involved in community service.  The applicant must also be in their second year of participation (or have participated previously for two years) in the golf program at Sturgeon Bay High School.

The Johnny G Scholarship was founded in 2002 in memory of Johnny L. Gonzales by his family and friends.  Johnny was a fixture of the northern Door County community and loved by many.  He was a graduate of Gibraltar High School and worked in the Door County restaurant business most of his (all too short) life. The Johnny G Scholarship(s) will be awarded to a Gibraltar High School senior (or graduate age 21 or younger at the time of application) with a demonstrated financial need.  The applicant's parents must be single, divorced from each other, separated, widowed or deceased.

The Robert J. Stoffel, Sr. Memorial Scholarship was created to help further the education of a promising young senior from Sevastopol High School in Door County, Wisconsin.  The ideal applicant will clearly demonstrate the characteristics of an emerging leader, will be involved in both school activities and community service, and will have a demonstrated financial need.

Each of the scholarships at the Community Foundation were created by the generosity of the people of our community.  Please consider making a provision in your estate plans to provide educational opportunities for young people in Door County.  Please contact the Community Foundation at (920) 746-1786 and we'll help you learn how.
