Greetings!

DCCF LogoAlthough you may not be familiar with them, Kimberley House first opened its doors in 1997.  They provide a second chance temporary home for men and women who are working to overcome drug and/or alcohol abuse.  Although their facility can only accomodate a handful of people at a time, over the last 12 years nearly 200 Door County residents have lived in Kimberley House.  Their staff and volunteers offer a helping hand, a listening ear, good nutrition, and a safe and comfortable bed while their residents continue on their journey to recovery.

This modest charity doesn't have the budget to market itself or maintain fancy websites, so we're glad to spread the word that Kimberley House is opening its doors to the community.

Jo Guenzel Named 2009 Philanthropist of the Year
The Board of Directors of the Door County Community Foundation unanimously selected Josephine Guenzel as the 2009 Philanthropist of the Year for her many years of giving back to Door County.

Jo GuenzelAt the annual Celebration of Giving luncheon on July 22nd, Jo Guenzel was presented the award by Dick Egan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Door County Community Foundation.  The following is an excerpt from the event program:

Jo fell in love with Door County in the mid-70's when she worked summers to pay for her education and ultimately settled here permanently.  When asked what captured her heart, she mentions the warmth of the people, the surrounding waters and natural beauty.  She sees this as a very caring and connected community in which to live a purposeful life. Along with a commitment to primary, mental and integrative healthcare, Jo has worked with Helpline, advocates for the Hispanic community and supports the work of Kimberley House and PFLAG.

Jo shares a wonderful story about community organizing and the development of the first free clinic and women's health program (Open Door Community Health Center) which at that time was located within the hospital.  She talks about the incredible dedication of a core group from a variety of fields that met consistently every two weeks for six months to make it happen. That original creation has since given birth to the Free Dental Clinic, the Wellness Center, the Hispanic Resource Center of Door and Kewaunee Counties, and the Community Clinic of Door County.  What is truly inspirational is to hear about the number of people with incredibly busy lives who still find an opportunity to volunteer; a community caring for each other.

Read more about Jo Guenzel's remarkable work by visiting the Community Foundation online.  And please join us in celebrating Josephine Guenzel and her incredible generosity of spirit.
Community Foundation Distributed $546,299 Last Fiscal Year
It was a little more than a year ago that the Door County Community Foundation, Inc. achieved its independence and became a fully Door County-run organization.  Thanks to the remarkable generosity of the people of Door County, we are pleased to report that the Community Foundation and its family of charitable funds awarded $546,229 for charitable purposes during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009.

SunsetThe Door County Community Foundation is a philanthropic vehicle that combines the charitable gifts of many to provide leadership and financial leverage in addressing the current and future needs of Door County.

Differentiating the Community Foundation from other philanthropic options is a high degree of personalized service for its donors.  At its most basic, the Door County Community Foundation is a simpler, cheaper, more tax-efficient alternative to creating your own private foundation.

The Community Foundation routinely works with families (and their attorneys, accountants and investment managers) to design a gift plan that can fit your unique financial situation and addresses the issues you care about most.

By giving through your own personal charitable Fund, you maximize both the tax benefit of your contribution as well as its impact by tapping into the Community Foundation's in-depth knowledge of local issues.

Contact the Community Foundation at (920) 746-1786 to learn more about how the Community Foundation can help you with your giving today and through your estate plans.  Please join with us and help inspire others to give back to sustain the community we love.
List of Door County Tax-Exempt Organizations Now Online
Door County is a special place.  There is a spirit that keeps us here - or draws us back each year.  So it's no wonder that Door County is also home to countless people who are working hard to sustain our quality of life.Community Group

There are over 320 charities, associations, service clubs, and other citizen groups serving our community!  In an effort to help connect people who care with the causes that matter, we have compiled a list of tax-exempt organizations that are based in Door County, Wisconsin.

The list was compiled through a good faith search of tax returns filed with the Internal Revenue Service and a review of other publicly available documents.  Of course, given the difficulty of maintaining such a comprehensive database, it is inevitable that there will be the occasional oversight.  If you discover one, please accept our sincerest apologies and submit your additions or corrections via email.

As you peruse the list online, jump over to the Volunteer Center of Door County to learn more about getting involved right here in our community.  And please consider including some of these worthy organizations in your estate plans.  Speak with your estate planning professional or contact the Community Foundation to learn how.  We hope that you too will give back to sustain the community we love.

The Community Foundation's Environmental Fund welcomes applications from traditional environmental organizations that are working to sustain and preserve our environment.  However, we also encourage non-environmental charities to bring forth ideas on how they might incorporate an environmentally conscious perspective into their work.  Visit the Community Foundation online to download the application materials.

Applications and supporting materials must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Tuesday, September 22nd at 4:00 p.m.  We welcome ideas from both arts organizations and other kinds of charities which hope to use the arts in their regular programming.

The Arts Fund is one of the Community Foundation's five priority areas of Community Impact.  Email the Community Foundation or call (920) 746-1786 if you'd like to learn more about how you can create a true philanthropic legacy by naming a Community Impact Fund as a beneficiary in your estate plans.
