Greetings! |
Last month, I had the opportunity to attend the annual meeting of the Family Centers of Door County. This is a humble organization without much flash or glamour, yet every day they go about their work quietly providing support for families in our community. The Family Centers own no facility of their own, yet manage to offer activities at five locations throughout Door County by partnering with other charities who have unused space. Led by their Executive Director Gina Wautier, the Family Centers epitomize efficiency and the leveraging of resources. They take a handful of dollars and somehow manage to turn it into thousands of dollars of impact. You may not have heard of the organization, but if you care about families, then you should learn more about the Family Centers. Visit them online and look at the myriad of programs they offer in partnership with other organizations. You'll be amazed at what they can do.

| Arts Fund Supports Crossroads at Big Creek |
Last year, Crossroads at Big Creek received a donation of six fully mounted Great Lakes fish. For most of us, such a gift would end up displayed on the wall at best - or maybe even placed in some dusty corner of the basement. However, as we've come to expect from our friends at Crossroads, a few small items is all it takes to inspire them to dream up something truly wonderful.
This Spring, Crossroads unveiled their new Great Lakes Ecosystem Display. It is a comprehensive educational exhibit built entirely around the donation of those six mounted fish.
Funded in part by a grant from the Community Foundation's Arts Fund, an artist in residence was engaged to imagine an exhibit demonstrating the diverse ecosystem that surrounds the Door Peninsula.
"Text books are full of facts about dissolved oxygen and turbidity," says Coggin Heeringa, Executive Director of Crossroads. "Internet savvy students could probably find information on the Internet. But kids who, on the first warm day of springtime, are splashing in the creek, catching insects, snails and crayfish will not only remember the lessons, but also will develop an appreciation for the environment that will last a lifetime."
The Door County Community Foundation is honored to have played a role in helping to make the Great Lakes Ecosystem Display a reality thorugh a grant from the Arts Fund. |
| Arts Fund Accepting Applications |
The "arts" describe a broad range of creative activities which can stimulate thought and inspire the soul. Therein lays the purpose of the Community Foundation's Arts Fund.
The Community Foundation hopes to support creative charitable activities in Door County that use the arts to enrich our community and touch the lives of the people of Door County.
We are pleased to invite charities to submit applications to our Arts Fund. Materials are available to download, or contact the Community Foundation for more information.
Applications and supporting materials must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Tuesday, July 28th at 4:00 p.m. We welcome ideas from both arts organizations and other kinds of charities which hope to use the arts in their regular programming.
The Arts Fund is one of the Community Foundation's five priority areas of Community Impact. Email the Community Foundation or call (920) 746-1786 if you'd like to learn more about how you can create a true philanthropic legacy by naming a Community Impact Fund as a beneficiary in your estate plans. |
| Board of Directors Spotlight: Ruth Barker |
Ruth Barker grew up in Wisconsin Rapids, has lived in the Fox Valley, and maintains a home in Arizona. Yet no matter where she is during the winter, when the weather warms, Ruth always finds her way back to Door County. It's something she and her family have done for a generation.
"When we lived in Appleton, Wisconsin in the 50's and 60's we came to Door County frequently with our boat," says Ruth. "Our children were acquainted with Door County and they returned in later years. It is still the same wonderful place we remembered." Whether a resident is seasonal, a transplant, or has been here for a lifetime, the beauty and lifestyle of Door County inspires us all. "We love the summer weather - warm but not too warm, like Arizona," says Ruth, "The water, the wonderful people, the green grass, the flowers - wild and otherwise, the history and appreciation of history." In an effort to give back to the place she loves so much, Ruth has worked hard to build the Door County Community Foundation. Ruth's involvement with community foundations began when she attended the annual meeting of the Community Foundation of South Wood County. "We knew many of those in the audience; some were wealthy and some were not. But everyone was working for the community," says Ruth. "This impressed us." Ruth now brings that same spirit to the Door County Community Foundation. "The community foundation works for and in the communities of Door County to sustain and inspire." | |
