Giving Matters Door County

| Greetings! |
This month I'd like to convey a special appeal for a project started by a pair of Door County's most community minded residents, Anne Emerson and Nell Jarosh of Edgewood Orchard Galleries. To celebrate the Galleries' 40th anniversary, they are publishing a new benefit cookbook, An Artist's Food for the Soul, with 100% of the sales donated to the Edgewood Orchard Cookbook Fund. This Fund supports social service, educational, arts and sports programs to help children develop into full and giving human beings. A similar effort in 2004 generated nearly $76,000 for charity. "We are doing the set-up work ourselves and hope to have everything ready to go by the beginning of Door County's tourist season," says Anne Emerson. "With the sales history of the first cookbook as well as the commitment of additional businesses offering to sell the second, we would like to increase the run to 6,000 copies with the goal of raising $120,000 for charity." Although the full-color printing is donated by Bill Castle, the paper and spiral binding must be purchased up front. While Anne, Nell and their families have already donated to start the effort, enlarging the print run could dramatically increase the moneys available for charity. So if you'd like to support this work with a charitable gift, send your contribution to:

| Lifelong Education Fund Accepting Applications |
The Community Foundation believes that learning is a lifelong pursuit - and we hope to nurture its incorporation into the many aspects of life in Door County.
Education must go beyond traditional schooling and formal education. It should include informal modes of learning and extend beyond traditional settings. It must be integrated into the home and throughout the community.
We are pleased to invite charities to submit applications to our Lifelong Education Fund. Materials are available to download, or contact the Community Foundation for more information.
Applications and supporting materials must be received in the Community Foundation's offices by Tuesday, May 19th at 4:00 p.m. We welcome ideas from both recognized educational institutions and non-traditional organizations.
The Lifelong Education Fund is one of the Community Foundation's five priority areas of Community Impact. Email the Community Foundation or call (920) 746-1786 if you'd like to learn more about how you can create a true philanthropic legacy by naming a Community Impact Fund as a beneficiary in your estate plans. |
| Isadoora Theatre Company - Excellence in Community Theatre |
One of the true hidden treasures of our community isn't so hidden anymore as the Isadoora Theatre Company wraps up its most recent season with a production of the Pulitzer Prize winning drama, "Wit." Described in the New York Times as a "brutally human and beautifully layered new play...you feel both enlightened and, in a strange way, enormously comforted," first-time playwright Margaret Edson has created a work that is as intellectually challenging as it is emotionally immediate. Performances run at Ephraim Village Hall through May 24th. "One of the greatest things we can do as a theatre company is to give voice to all spectrums of our community and bring to light the true human desires for justice, hope and the possibilities of life," says Holly Feldman, President of Isadoora Theatre Company's Board. "It is our Mission to celebrate theatre; to provide theatrical experiences of intellectual integrity; and perhaps most importantly, to provide an environment for open self-examination and artistic risk. We believe the community is educationally and culturally enriched through our endeavors." An important part of the future of Isadoora is its endowment. "As a completely volunteer run organization, we hope that our endowment will someday support our general operating expenses so that we can put more of our resources towards raising the bar on our productions," says Feldman. "Our ultimate dream would be to be able to employ community members as paid staff with our organization and to have a 'home' of our own. But for now, taking the first step in establishing our endowment was a wonderful way to celebrate our anniversary." Isadoora Theatre entrusts the administration of its endowment funds to the Door County Community Foundation. The Community Foundation aggregates the endowed assets of many Door County charities and family foundations, collectively investing them as a larger, more diversified pool. The Community Foundation also facilitates complex gifts and estate gifts to charities that serve our region. To learn more about how you can incorporate the Isadoora endowment as a beneficiary in your estate plans, contact Isadoora Theatre at (920) 493-3667, or the Community Foundation at (920) 746-1786.

| Board of Directors Spotlight: John Herlache |
There's no place in the world John Herlache would rather be than right here in Door County. "My father was President and CEO of Baylake Bank (then known as Bank of Sturgeon Bay) and my mother was a school teacher," says John. Having grown up in Sturgeon Bay, as a young man John toiled as a self-described "cherry picker and farm lackey" when he wasn't working as a teller in the bank.
"I met my wife, Nell, when she was working as a waitress at Johnny Veith's Cottage Restaurant. Her family lived in a cottage on Garrett Bay during the summers." There wasn't a part of Door County that John didn't experience or enjoy while growing up. "Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay, Northern Door - all three of these areas made my love for the County universal." After completing his residency in general surgery and finishing his military service, John longed to return to practice medice in the community he knew as a child. "I wanted my kids to grow up where there was no class system, just people who all played together and worked together," says John. So he and Nell chose to raise their family in Door County and have been tireless champions of the community ever since. "My fondness for the people and the County in general made me want to return to the County and be a part of making the quality of life better for the people who live here, both in medical care and in general." In 1999, John joined with other community leaders to launch the Door County Community Foundation. "The Door County Community Foundation is a perfect fit for me," says John. "Its sole purpose is to improve the quality life for those who live and play in Door County. What could be more perfect?"
The Door County Community Foundation is honored to include and celebrate John Herlache as our Vice Chairman and an integral member of our Board of Directors. | |
