| Greetings! |
Lakeshore CAP, Inc. is one of those largely unknown charities that quietly plays an enormous role in assisting the less fortunate members of our Door County community. I recently had the opportunity to visit with their CEO from Manitowoc, Noel Ryder, and Sandi Soik from their Door County office.
Lakeshore CAP offers an incredible range of services from homebuyer education, to youth diversion programs, to far too many other programs to list here. Visit them online to learn more.
But one of the most basic needs they meet is through their Food Pantry which will help stock the cupboards of over 300 families in Door County this month alone. Unfortunately, during these tough economic times, the Pantry is having a hard time keeping up with the demand.
Right now, our friends at the Food Pantry tell me that they need personal care items like toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo, and deodorant. Their shelves are also short of cereal, soup, and macaroni and cheese - which are the most simple and basic meals for so many of the less fortunate families in our community.
If you can spare a few of these items from your own shelves, please call Lakeshore CAP at 743-0192 to arrange a time to drop them off at the Food Pantry in Sturgeon Bay.
Let's all lend a helping hand to the more than 300 families in Door County who will use the Food Pantry this December.

| Donor Advised Fund - A Great Year-End Planning Tool |
|
If you're thinking of establishing a private foundation - particularly before the tax year comes to an end - consider opening a Donor Advised Fund as better alternative.
Opening a Donor Advised Fund at the Door County Community Foundation allows you to make a gift today, thereby moving assets out of your income stream before the tax year ends, but you can decide on the recipient charities in the years to come. A Donor Advised Fund is an excellent planning tool and can help simplify your giving.
It's a simpler, cheaper, and more tax-efficient alternative to creating your own private foundation!
Here's how it works:
- You make a gift to the Door County Community Foundation - you can give cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, or other assets.
- We set up a special fund in your name, in the name of your family or business, or in honor of any person or organization you choose.
- You receive a tax deduction in the year your gift is made.
- You recommend uses for the fund - working with our professional staff to support the causes and organizations you care about most.
- We handle all the administrative details and issue grants to charities in the name of the fund you establish (if you prefer, grants can be made anonymously).
- Your gift can be placed into an endowment that is invested over time. Earnings from your fund are used to make grants addressing community needs. Your gift - and all future earnings from your gift - can become a permanent source of community capital, giving back literally forever.
Email the Community Foundation, call (920) 746-1786, or contact your own tax professional to learn more about how a Donor Advised Fund can help you be generous in a very tax-efficient way. |
| Scholarship Applications Now Available |
The Door County Community Foundation's 2009 Scholarship Applications are now available on the Community Foundation's website and at the guidance offices of local high schools.
Many of the Community Foundation's scholarships are administered in partnership with Door County schools and decisions as to the recipients are made there by school professionals. However, there are a handful of scholarships for seniors at Sturgeon Bay, Gibraltar and Sevastopol in which the selection process is independent of local schools.
And if you're interested in establishing a scholarship today, or as a part of your estate plans, contact the Community Foundation at (920) 746-1786. |
| David L. Spude Endowment Fund Supports Cancer Center |
The Door County Community Foundation invites you to support the good work of the Door County Cancer Center through a gift to the David L. Spude Endowment Fund. David L. Spude, a devoted husband and father, was loved and respected by all who knew him. His employers, the Doerr family, trusted and depended on him as their "right hand man" as they developed their motor plants throughout Wisconsin. Sadly, David died of cancer in June of 2004. As a tribute to David, the Spude and Doerr families, along with the Door County Memorial Hospital Foundation, established the David L. Spude Endowment Fund to perpetually benefit the Door County Cancer Center. This endowment fund will help to ensure that a full complement of cancer treatments will be available and affordable for all Door County residents and visitors who need it for generations to come. "Dave personified what it meant to be true to your local community. After nearly forty years he was fortunate to retire to his beloved Door County," says David Doerr. "This endowment is here to remind us to pursue continuous improvement through charitable works, as Dave would have loved to have done, had time allowed." The Door County Community Foundation is honored to be able to assist in the administration of the David L. Spude Endowment Fund. To make a gift today, or to include a provision in your estate plans, please call the Door County Memorial Hospital Foundation at (920) 746-1071, or contact the Community Foundation at (920) 746-1786.
