Greetings!

Welcome to our November Sign Language Unit Newsletter.  Here's a chance to find out more about:
This unit focuses on Sign Language.  Throughout our curriculum, we use elements of American Sign Language to reinforce the lessons we teach.  In addition to giving the kids a subtle awareness of communicating with the hard-of-hearing, use of Sign Language has been proven to reinforce learning of words and, of course, it acts as a great exercise for those developing fine motor skills.  In this unit, we talk about watching our older siblings go off on the school bus, with signs for backpack, bus and school, in "School Time Strut".  We have various topical songs in this month's curriculum, including "Thankful For", in which we think of all the things for which we are grateful as we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday here in the United States.  We also learn lots of signs in "Let's Sign The ABCs", although we don't expect the kids to memorize all 26 words!  You can find these songs, and many more, at our online store and you can download them as mp3 files to play on your ipod (for the kids, of course!) or other player.

Keep a look out for the quarterly performances for those of you with children in Dancercise classes in Minnesota, when our classes will show you what we've been learning.  If your child is enrolled in our classes in a child care center, look for a note in your cubby or coming home with your child.  You are welcome to drop into any class to watch, but we'll put on a show for you this month!  No special clothing or shoes are required for these performances.  Remember, we encourage the kids to participate to the extent they feel comfortable.  Don't be disappointed if you child is a little shy or doesn't "do much" - those with a little stage fright in these performances are often the same ones who ham it up the most in regular class!

For those of you in the Twin Cities, I will be performing at Mall of America (in the Sears Court) on Tuesday November 16th at 10am and 11am.  I hope to see you there!

Finally, a request.  Dancercise Kids is a business and like all businesses, we rely on word of mouth and customer support.  If you like our classes, tell a friend!  Refer a friend, and we'll give your child a free Dancercise T-Shirt!  Just click this button to pass this e-mail on, and help us keep our business healthy and growing.

CurriculumNovember Curriculum - "Sign Language"
turkeySign Language is the theme of the November Unit of our Communication Carnival Quarter. We're covering a number of topics this month, but incorporating sign language into everything we do.  The Hoppity Hop dance is a "family musical" featuring "Tiana" on guest vocals.  And, while we don't expect the kids to remember all of the sign language we use, we hope they'll pick up a few tricks to show you.  Ask them to sign Please (rub hand in a circle on left chest) and Thank You (touch chin and move hand away in a flat upward facing motion).

Muscle of the Month: Neck

Fitness - "School Time Strut"
Lesson: Your neck muscles help you to nod "Yes, please" or shake "No, thank you".  We warm up our neck muscles slowly so as not to hurt them.  Our song talks about seeing our older siblings get on the school bus!
Steps: Turkey Neck, Head Rolls, Point Circles with Nose, Nod Up & Down

Jazz - "Funky Turkey"
Lesson: Your neck muscles help your head do silly moves, just like a turkey!  We get super silly and funky during this dance!
Steps: Funky Turkey, Waddle Wiggle
Sign Language: Turkey

Ballet - "Thankful For"
Lesson: We have many things to be thankful for.  We ask the kids what they are thankful for, and usually get some entertaining responses!
Steps: Rond de Jambe, 3 Step Turn, Bourrée Turn
Sign Language: You, Me, Flower, Dog

Tap - "Hoppity Hop"
Lesson: All of the different sounds around us can make music.  The rain, grandpa's cane, dad's shoes and brother's pots and pans.
Steps: Heel Heel Step, Time Step, Hoppity Hop
Sign Language: Mother, Father, Brother, Sister, Grandpa, Grandma, Family

Creative - "Let's Sign The ABCs"
Lesson: We are signing the alphabet.  We also sign the words "Alphabet" and "Sign Language", as well as various words beginning with the letters of the alphabet: "A is for apple, B is for bus, C is for the Cookies made for all of us....".
Fun Fact: There are multiple variations of Sign Language - just like accents and dialects, they vary from country to country and even within regions.

Parent Fun: Questions For Your Dancercise Kid!
parent questionAsk your child these questions and let them show you what they've been learning!

Can you show me the "Funky Turkey" dance?
Can you sign Please & Thank You?
What are you Thankful For?
Can you sign any other words, like apple, bus or cat?

They might not remember everything but watch their imaginations go to town!
leavingIf you are leaving your center or Dancercise...
School busKids are back in school and things are returning to a normal schedule.  Please remember to let us know if you are choosing not to participate in Dancercise Kids.  We require written notice (e-mail or online form acceptable).  Please don't ask our instructors or childcare center staff to tell us.

If you have already let our office know, no need to do so again.
ActivityFamily Activity: What Are You Thankful For
family with pumpkinIn our song "Thankful For", we ask the kids what they are thankful for.  We get a wide variety of responses, but "Mom", "Dad" and other family members are big favorites.  "Candy" figures in there somewhere usually too!  You could practice the traditional Thanksgiving "speech" for your family here, with our song for accompaniment if you choose.

Here are the lyrics to our song, "Thankful For":

I'm thankful for the birds in the sky
I'm thankful for the fish in the sea
I'm thankful for the warm summer breeze
I'm thankful for the smell of roses
I'm thankful for little puppy dog noses
I'm thankful for you loving me
I'm thankful for the friends that I have
And my family
Most of all I'm thankful
Just to be me

I'm thankful for my own warm bed
I'm thankful for the book that mom read
I'm thankful for moonlight and the stars
I'm thankful for a kiss and a hug
I'm thankful for a bubble bath in the tub
I'm thankful for you loving me
I'm thankful for the friends that I have
And my family
Most of all I'm thankful to be
Yes, I'm just thankful to be
Most of all I'm thankful
Just to be me
Thank you for participating in Dancercise.  You can find much more information on our website here, or you can e-mail us with questions.
