Greetings!

Welcome to our August Occupations Unit Newsletter.  Here's a chance to find out more about:

It seems so premature, but some of us are even thinking about getting back to school for the Fall.  Fall's invariably the time that we start getting back into a routine with school, classes etc.  If your child is in Dancercise classes at their child care center and moving on to Kindergarten in the Fall, please let us know BEFORE August 15th to avoid having your card charged for September classes.  Of course, if your kindergarten or older child wants to continue to enjoy the positive, non-competitive spirit of Dancercise Kids, you can look at our studio in Minnetonka for day-time and after-school and weekend classes too. We teach all kinds of dance and musical theater classes for kids from ages 2 to 16!

We do have a number of people on our e-mail list that represent our licensees and future licensees from all over the world.  For those of you in the Southern hemisphere, we apologize for the "Northern Hemispherist" perspective - when you live in Minnesota, it's hard to avoid.  If you lived in a climate that is below freezing (it seems) half the year, you'd make the most of summer too!

This month's unit is Occupations, where we talk about some of the things we might want to do or be when we grow up.  As with all of our units in our three year rotating curriculum, Occupations comes along each August but with new songs.  This year, songs include Mommy & Daddy, When I Grow Up and Great Detective, all of which are available
for download from our online store for just $2 each, so you can pick your child's favorite songs and download them for your media player.

For those of you that use "social media" like Facebook, we'd love to have you as our Fans.  You can find our Facebook page for Dancercise Kids here Find us on Facebook, and for me, Tessa, here Find us on Facebook.

Also, for those of you that are in the Twin Cities area and would like to join us at Mall of America®, on Tuesday, August 31st (10am and 11am) I will be performing some of our Dancercise favorites at the Mall's Toddler Tuesday event in the Best Buy® Rotunda on the Mall's East side near the American Girl® store.

On behalf of everyone here at Dancercise Kids, we appreciate your business, and thank you for being part of our ever-expanding global family!

CurriculumAugust Curriculum - "Occupations"

Occupations is the theme of our August Undoctorsit.  We often ask our kids "what do you want to be when you grow up?" and enjoy the creativity and imagination that ensues.  In this unit, we look at some of the thoughts that kids often have on their future occupations (all of the ideas in these songs come from the mouths of real "Dancercise" kids!) and have fun imagining what these might be like!

Muscle of the Month:  Biceps

Fitness - "Occupation Sensation"
Lesson: This boy can't decide what to be when he grows up, so he asks his teacher, show suggests that he find something he loves and do that!
Warm-up: Windshield Wipers, Arm Circles, Push-Ups, Swim, The Muscles

Jazz - "Great Detective"
Lesson: Let's be Great Detectives! We are on the case of the missing Ed, Mrs Jones's lost puppy.  Let's bring him home safely.
Steps: 3 Step Turn, Knee Bounces, Jump Front Clap Clap
Sign Language: Dog, Quiet, Detective

Ballet - "Mommy & Daddy"
Lesson: One of the best things in life  you can be is a Mom or a Dad!
Steps:
Bourrée with Baby, Tendu, Plié
Sign Language: Mom, Dad, Baby

Tap - "When I Grow Up"
Lesson: There are so many things that you can do.  In this song, we talk about some of the most popular future occupations that kids love to talk about.
Steps:
Shuffle Step Clap, Heel Step, Step Together
Sign Language: Teacher, Dentist, Pilot, Baker, Actor, Doctor, Smile

Creative - "Transportation Fun"
Lesson: Many jobs deal with ways of transportation.  We explore some of them in this song.
Sign Language: Car, Boat, Airplane, Train

Tumbling - Pencil Roll

ParentQuestions
Parent Fun: Questions For Your Dancercise Kid!

Ask your child these questions and let them show you what they've been learning!
How do you sign Teacher?
Where are your Bicep Muscles?
Can you show me a Pencil Roll?
Show me a Bourrée Turn.
They might not remember everything but watch their imaginations go to town!
ActivityFamily Activity: Occupation Sensation!
mom at work

At Dancercise Kids, we're always trying to stimulate your children's imaginations and get them thinking about the world around them.  Since this is our Occupations unit, this is a good time to talk about what people around them, including you, do for a living.  If you're a home-maker, now is a great time to help them understand that that role is just as important as any other "job" - and it comes with fringe benefits: Them!  One idea is to use hats or costumes that you may have - or, if you're feeling creative, make, and use those to role-play.

Supplies: You, Costumes & Hats, Music (a Dancercise song or anything of your choice - might we recommend When I Grow Up or Occupation Sensation?). Role-play different occupations - kids easily identify with occupations they see routinely - doctors, dentists, teachers and so on.  If you're fortunate enough to have traveled on an airplane, "pilot" is always a popular one.  If you have time to bake cookies or other goodies with your child, then you can be "bakers".  And so on....why limit the imagination?
Thank you for participating in Dancercise.  You can find much more information on our website here, or you can e-mail us with questions.
