Dancercise International!
Kids with chins in hands
Did you know that Dancercise Kids is taught to children on three continents?  Through licensees, children over the world are learning the very same songs and dances as your children.  If you're based in our home town area of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, you might not know that Dancercise Kids has licensees all over the USA - from New York to California and Ohio to Texas, as well as Malaysia, Singapore and Tanzania!  We're proud of the fact that our songs and curriculum appeal to kids and teachers all over the world - the Dancercise family grows every day!

Teachers and parents all over the world have also bought our songs from our online store or from iTunes. Kids are singing Dancercise songs in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, India, Scotland, French Guyana, South Africa, Italy, Mexico and many other countries. So next time you pop one of our CDs in your car, make sure your kids know they're part of a worldwide family!

Greetings!

Welcome to our June Animals Unit Newsletter.  Here's a chance to find out more about:

Well we've finished our annual show!  For those of you that had the opportunity to attend, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.  The surveys we got back from you certainly suggested that, and we appreciate the many, many compliments we received from you about the show and the Dancercise Kids program overall.  Thank you!  For those of you that were unable to attend, we hope you'll consider the next show: our costume orders for the 2011 show go out in January 2011, so keep an eye out for them then - obviously we'll send out plenty of reminders.

We're heading into the summer and, although many of you are leaving your child care center or your center is taking a break from classes for the summer, we hope you'll continue to encourage the kids to think about the healthy lessons they've learned.  For those of you in Minnesota, we have a short season when it's warm outside, so let's take advantage of that time - whether it's a swim in the lake, some family bike rides or simply playing outside.

June's curriculum is our Animals unit.  We'll be talking about different animals that the kids may or may not know and, consistent with all of our monthly units, Dancercise provides the kids with those little nuggets of useful information while they're learning dance, fitness and creative movements.  Check out a brief video of Tessa doing Granny's Farm (and some other songs) here

The songs we use in this quarter - as ever - are available for download from our online store for just $2 each, so you can pick your child's favorite songs and download them for your favorite media player.

A reminder: if you are in the Minneapolis area, and haven't made your summer plans yet, know that we still have a few slots available for our and entertaining camps at our studio in Minnetonka; for those of you on the St. Paul side of town, our instructor Anna Tilsen-Mogeni offers some similar options from her studio, Dance'n'Magic, in St. Paul

On behalf of everyone here at Dancercise Kids, we appreciate your business, and thank you for being part of our ever-expanding global family!

...and Moms...remember Fathers' Day on Sunday June 20th!!!

CurriculumJune Curriculum - "Animals"
Monkey Business
Animals is the theme of our June Unit.  We'll learn about Monkeys, Caterpillars and all the animals we'll find down at Granny's Farm!  Of course, we'll learn one of our favorite songs, "Diggity Bone", which has a groove that has been known to get Dads singing along in the car without the kids....our monkeys get into trouble, and our caterpillar gets a little too full of himself at just the wrong time of day!

Muscle of the Month: Back

Fitness - "With A Friend"
Lesson: Playing is more fun with a friend!
Warm-up: Cat Stretch, Touch Toes, Touch The Sky, Snake Stretch

Jazz - "Diggity Bone"
Lesson: Everyone loves the Diggity Bone!  It's funky and fun.  You can do it with your friends or you can do it all alone.
Steps: Arm Wave, Jumps, Turns
Sign Language: Dance, Friend

Ballet - "Monkey Business"
Lesson: Monkeys are always curious and getting into everything. These monkeys forgot to listen to their mom, but you should always listen to what your parents say.
Steps:
Sauté Hops, Swing, Tendu, Second Position
Sign Language: Monkey, Banana

Tap - "Can't Catch Me"
Lesson: This caterpillar thinks the birds and snakes can't catch him.  So he teases and taunts them but, at the end,....you'll see what happens: Gulp!
Steps:
Step Kick, Match, Run
Sign Language: Bird, Snake, Miss

Creative - "Granny's Farm"
Lesson: What makes things grow? Eating healthy foods? What do the animals think? Best to ask Granny, she is so wise, she will know!
Sign Language: Cow, Chicken, Cat, Pig, Grandmother, Grow, Love

Tumbling - Cradle Rock

Parent Fun: Questions For Your Dancercise Kid!
dad and daughter

Ask your child these questions and let them show you what they've been learning!
How do you sign Monkey?
Where are your Back Muscles?
Can you show me a Cradle Rock?
Show me the Diggity Bone Walk.
They might not remember everything but watch their imaginations go to town!

ActivityFamily Activity: The Diggity Bone
dog

We had to pick this one.  Without a doubt one of Tessa's favorites in her live concerts and - like all of the Dancercise music - easy on the ears, the Diggity Bone is an uptempo, contemporary groove that everyone can do.  You can watch Tessa and Tiana perform the Diggity Bone here and you can download the song for just $2 here.

Supplies: Music, A Passing Attempt At Rhythm

Parents, it's OK if you don't feel comfortable dancing.  Your kids will be laughing at your attempts before too long anyway, so you may as well get used to it.  Just go along with the groove, the steps are pretty simple and you can pick them up from the video above.

The main things you need to do are:
- Pop up and down
- Double clap in each chorus
- Turn around (when it tells you)
- Jazz slide if you're feeling ambitious.

Check out Tessa's video and do the Diggity Bone with your kids (and you too, Dad!).
