Dancercise International!
Kids with chins in hands
Did you know that Dancercise Kids is taught to children on three continents?  Through licensees, children over the world are learning the very same songs and dances as your children.  If you're based in our home town area of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, you might not know that Dancercise Kids has licensees all over the USA - from New York to California and Ohio to Texas, as well as Malaysia, Singapore and Tanzania!  We're proud of the fact that our songs and curriculum appeal to kids and teachers all over the world - the Dancercise family grows every day!

Teachers and parents all over the world have also bought our songs from our online store or from iTunes. Kids are singing Dancercise songs in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, India, Scotland, French Guyana, South Africa, Italy, Mexico and many other countries. So next time you pop one of our CDs in your car, make sure your kids know they're part of a worldwide family!

Greetings!

Welcome to our May Performance Unit Newsletter.  Here's a chance to find out more about:

It's annual show time!  This is our special performance recital that we do for those families that chose to participate, and this year it's on May 23rd in Hopkins.  Those of you that ordered a costume earlier this year will have them delivered to your home address on record via USPS by about May 10th, so watch for that.

This month, we also do quarterly performances in the schools, so watch for a flier in your cubby at your center for your child's
specific date and time.

The curriculum this month focuses on performance and self-confidence.  The songs and lyrics the kids work with are geared towards helping them to be confident in who they are, and having fun with their performance, whether it's on stage or at home.

The songs we use in this quarter are available for download from our online store for just $2 each, so you can pick your child's favorite songs and download them for your favorite media player.

We're heading into the summer months.  Most of our classes continue year-round, with fresh curriculum and songs for the summer quarter from June to August.  Our quarter is Planet Playground, and the units are "Animals", "People & Places" and "Occupations".

Also, if you are in the Minneapolis area, and haven't made your summer plans yet, know that we offer some original and entertaining camps at our studio in Minnetonka; for those of you on the St. Paul side of town, our instructor Anna Tilsen-Mogeni offers some similar options from her studio, Dance'n'Magic, in St. Paul

On behalf of everyone here at Dancercise Kids, we appreciate your business, and thank you for being part of our ever-expanding global family!

...and Dads...remember Mothers' Day on Sunday May 9th!!!

CurriculumMay Curriculum - "Performance"

Broadway
Performance
is the theme of our May Unit.  We're remembering that confidence is important, but it's how we feel about ourselves, and being comfortable with who we are is the most important thing.  It's just fine if we can't do every dance step. All you have to do is remember the three rules of Dancercise:
(1) Be a Good Listener, (2) Try Your Best, and (3) Have Fun!

Muscle of the Month: Deltoids

Fitness - "Confidence"
Lesson: Believe in  yourself and you can do anything!
Warm-up: Scarecrow, Truck Windshield Wipers, Arm Circles

Jazz - "I Can Dance"
Lesson: Sing, dance and have fun!  This is our Grand Finale number for kids appearing in our annual show.
Steps: Chassé, Spin, Shimmy, Bounce Knees
Sign Language: Thank you, I love dancing, I love you

Ballet - "Mirror Image Game"
Lesson: Working with a partner, we take turns being a mirror and the performer
Steps: Get Creative!
Sign Language: Mirror, Game

Tap - "My Little Star"
Lesson:  We dance like we're in a Broadway show!  Big and full of energy
Steps:
Brush Front Cross Toe, Kicks, Jazz Slides, Bow, Swing
Toe, Lunge
Sign Language: Star

Creative - "Freeze Game"
Lesson: Walk around in silly, special ways and FREEZE!

Tumbling - Cartwheel

NOTE:  The kids will continue to practice their two special songs and the grand finale ready for their performance, whether it's at your school or at the annual show.

Parent Fun: Questions For Your Dancercise Kid!
dad and daughter

Ask your child these questions and let them show you what they've been learning!
How do you sign Thank You?
Can you show me a Giant Windshield Wiper?
Can you show me a Bow?
Show me a Chassé.
They might not remember everything but watch their imaginations go to town!

ActivityFamily Activity: Freeze Game
Director's Chair

This is a great one and very easy to do at home - indoors or outdoors.  It's very simple - you can buy our Freeze Game song if you like, or use your own music at home.

Supplies:
Music, Imagination

Each time you play the music, encourage the kids to act in a particular manner while they are moving.  For example, you could have them marching as if they're in a band, or hopping like bunnies, or walking like crabs.  They have to keep doing that activity until you stop the music and shout Freeze.  The objective of the game is to hold your pose until the music starts again.

Instead of the traditional activity, where someone is "out" if they move when the music stops, consider simply rewarding the "stillest" one, so that no one feels left out.  Of course, during a song, EVERYONE in the group will, at some point, be the stillest...

Since this month is all about confidence and performance, consider having them all take a bow at the end of the game too.  This can be a whole game in and of itself - they can pretend to be up on stage in front of a roaring audience, and having to take dozen of curtain calls!
Thank you for participating in Dancercise.  You can find much more information on our website here, or you can e-mail us with questions.
