Greetings!
Show Time
Can it really be almost time for our annual show? If you're in Dance, in the northern hemisphere at least, now is when it gets really crazy preparing for your recitals in the next few months. Here at Dancercise Kids, we'll be hosting our own show at the end of May and aligned with that, we're in our Spotlight on Imagination quarter. In fact, our current unit Creative Dramatics, and the next one, Performance, are really geared to helping the kids get used to the idea of some level of public performance. As with any large group of kids, we have our share of hams and wallflowers, and our job as teachers is to make sure that everyone gets a chance to develop their confidence in front of an audience. But, most important of all is that our kids have fun, so it's important to reinforce that and avoid pushing anyone too far out of their comfort zone. Getting MusicalAlso in this quarter, we tackled musical instruments. Tessa provides some simple tips for making your own instruments out of easy to find household items below. We also practice our stage presence, including our bows or curtsies, remembering to smile on stage, and also just to relax and have fun. If you're having fun on stage, the audience will have fun watching you. In fact, if you want to see a slide show from one of our recitals, click here and watch the video to see some dazzling smiling young faces, and happy families. Strong Minds, Funny Bones As you know by now if you follow Dancercise, we are proud of our curriculum and what we're able to teach to the children in our care. Those little lessons go a long way. In fact, we heard a story about a third grade class room that had used some of our music for their science project. When asked some basic facts about the human body during an oral test, they - as a group - broke out into lines from our song "Funny Bone". How cool is that, that these 9 year olds - into Hannah, Wizards and everything else - are not too cool to remember their Dancercise lyrics! Going GlobalThe Dancercise family goes from strength to strength. In the last few months, we're thrilled to have added licensees from three continents: Emily in Singapore, Shela in Tanzania and several from Wisconsin, Ohio, Nevada, California, Texas and New York. Thank you all for placing your trust in us, and we are confident you will enjoy teaching Dancercise for many years to come. Please, send us your stories, photos and videos, we'd love to hear how kids across the country and the world and enjoying Dancercise! Dancers' EyesAwww, come on, you have to admit that is a pretty cute name for our newsletter. "Dancers' Eyes"? "Dancercise"? Get it? We hope to be sending out these newsletters once a quarter or so to let you know what we're up to in our curriculum. In this issue, we have a special spring deal for you where you can get our Year One Curriculum for $50 off! If you've already purchased Year 1, hang on to that code because it will be good for $50 off years 2 and 3, both of which will be on our web store very soon! We hope you find these communications interesting and useful. As always, please don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions or are interested in our curriculum. And forward this to your friends and colleagues too! Sincerely, Simon Wiltshire Chief Operating Officer

PERFORMANCE SMILES

Attitude Is EverythingWe mentioned earlier in the newsletter the importance of the kids having fun on stage. If they are, then the audience will enjoy it. The same applies to you as a teacher of pre-school dancers. They feed from your energy. That means big movements, big smiles, lots of enthusiasm. The more you enjoy yourself, the more they will. At Dancercise, when we hire our own teachers, we look for this quality more than anything else. When you are teaching a four year old, your infectious enthusiasm will count for far more than a perfect plie! Remember, ATTITUDE trumps APTITUDE any day of the week, so smile and the whole world smiles at you! |

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
|
|
A Craft At Home Makes Music In ClassIn our musical instruments unit, which we did in March this year, although of course as a licensee you can do it whenever you want to, we use some simple instruments in combination with our songs to give the kids some early introduction to making "structured noise". To make some easy instruments at home, just take empty, clean containers such as tins with plastic lids (old baby formula cans are perfect, but anything will do). Make sure it is thoroughly clean and avoid anything that carried nuts so that you don't risk an allergy issue. Pop on the lid and then wrap the entire container tightly in electrical tape. You can get creative with different colors of tape, stripes and so on. Remember to get the tape all the way round, especially and including the top. Do the same thing with empty spice containers (the ones that are about 5" tall) except before you put on the lid, put some uncooked rice, beans and/or pasta in them, then remember to tape over the lid too, so you don't have a spillage in class. Hey presto, you have maracas, shakers and other instruments for class! Experiment with different sizes and contents to get a fuller variety of sounds.
