A Bold New Year
From the Headmaster
In the school business there are so many occasions to reflect and resolve that New Years is almost a way of life.
The start of a new school year in September is full of excitement with new students, courses and programs. The fiscal year, beginning July 1, deals mostly with financial projections, but it's the end result of a rewarding and soul searching process to establish priorities. The start of the calendar year in January includes some personal reflection and new direction; but the biggest boost of energy for the school the last few years has been the results of the Rowan Family Foundation deliberations.
For the 7th consecutive year, Doane Academy has been a grant recipient. The first amount was $10,000. For the last 3 years, including this past December, the amount has been in excess of $1M.
Those of us who live and work Doane Academy every day are some combination of honored, humbled and inspired by this level of "investment." I tried to have the students and faculty understand the impact of this gift at a recent All School Meeting. Divide $1.1M by our enrollment of 207 students ($5314.01 per student). A foundation that believes the quality of life in the country and in the world is created by the energy and intelligence of well-educated people is investing heavily in Doane Academy. It is a huge vote of confidence from a very discerning and enlightened group of people.
If you are part of the Doane Circle, celebrate with us and help us to honor this investment with your own commitment to excellence. If you are not part of the Doane Circle, you need to consider it as one of your own new year's resolutions. The best of what is going on in the world comes from good people doing great things. We're preparing young people to take their places as strong, influential community leaders and world changers in the next generation.
Respectfully,
John F. McGee
Headmaster

The holiday season is the culmination of another year of the school's work in the community. From mitten trees, river runs, service projects and even a soup kitchen stop with the Governor of New Jersey, Doane Academy's students and staff have gone the extra mile to lend a hand.

River Run 2011
|
More than 100 runners weaved their way down the Delaware River and through Burlington City on November 5 to support the community service projects of Doane Academy, the YMCA of Burlington and Camden Counties and the Burlington Rotary Club during the 10th annual Burlington River Run.
Doane Academy donated its $1,500 share of the River Run proceeds to the non-profit organization Back on my Feet at the School Family Thanksgiving Luncheon. Back on my Feet deals with homelessness by raising funds and awareness through walks and runs with athletic apparel companies outfitting all runners so that between the gear and the boost in self-esteem one cannot tell who is homeless and who is a supporter.
The School Family Luncheon is an annual tradition that brings together all students PreK-12 in the dining room into groups named after important figures in the schools history that feature 2-3 students from each grade. School families meet each Thursday morning for games, mentoring and community service projects.
Doane's Aidan McManus '21 named a NJ Hero
 | |
Aidan's Lower School classmates came out to cheer him on and posed with the Governor.
|
One of Doane's youngest community service champs was recognized in a big way on November 23.
New Jersey first lady Mary Pat Christie named Aidan McManus '21 a New Jersey Hero both for his volunteer work each Wednesday at St. Mary's Church's Ladle of Love Soup Kitchen and his efforts to raise money to help the homeless through movie nights and selling handmade comic books.
NJ's first family, including Governor Chris Christie, joined Aidan at Ladle of Love and announced that a local lawyer will help Aidan start his own non-profit, pro bono.

New Era for Doane Arts Doane artists finished 2011 at a crescendo, adapting to change and bringing new skills and resources to bear.
The Lower and Upper School Winter Concerts started the season with Tour de Force performances. The Upper School sounded and looked the part, wearing tuxedos to honor late band director Ron Bennett. The standing ovations for Dr. Shelley Zuckerman's choirs, Mrs. Adrienne Mazar's bands and Mr. Warren Wenger's strings students were much deserved.
The cast of the Christmas Mystery delivered a performance like none other this December. Due to the ongoing restoration of the Chapel, the annual play was moved to the Scarborough Auditorium. Director Mrs. Christine Peltz (P '15) kept true to the performance's script and used the open-ness of the new space to heighten the acting and audience experience. Dr. Zuckerman's Upper School Chorus made a quick turnaround from the holiday concerts and turned in truly 'angelic' renditions of the Mystery score.

Doane's actors will be back on stage, March 15-17 in Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's musical Little Shop of Horrors. Ticket and sponsorship information will be "coming soon."
2012 marks a new era for Doane Academy visual arts. Mrs. Jackie Bak '76 (P '02, '06) has handed the reins of the Art Department to Ms. Amanda Smith after more than a decade working with the school's artists from finger paint to AP Studio Art. Mrs. Bak spent the last two years building a relationship between the school and Studio Incamminati. Studio Incamminati instructors will now work with Doane artists three days a week, ensuring the partnership not only endures, but thrives.

Doane Athletics Basketball Season Starts with a Bang
 | |
Men's Varsity Basketball won the Panther Classic Basketball Tournament for the second year in a row.
|
Results through Friday, January 13. Click team to see schedule.
Coach Dan Williamson's squad has performed at a much higher level than its .500 record would suggest. In its first year of NJSIAA eligibility Doane has held its own against tougher competition, with less practice time. For the second straight year and third time since 2007, the Spartans won the Ranney School's Panther Classic Basketball Tournament. Captain Davis Graham '13 took home MVP honors. Stephen Marshall '12 and Chris Scott '14 were named to the all-tournament team. Coach Gerry Scott (P '14) took the helm of a young team, spearheaded by senior captain and point guard Elena Zangerle '12, this season. The squad shows promise considering the margin of victory in each of the Lady Spartans' three wins averages to more than 20 points. The Lady Spartans finished 3rd at the Panther Classic with MonaLisa Hyppolite '14 making the all-tournament team. The Spartans-in-waiting have rolled through their opening schedule, winning four out of five with a lone blemish against Riverton. Coach Justin Cooper's squad will finish up their season with a Valentine's Day re-match against Riverton on February 14. Middle School Girls' Basketball (0-7) Coach Michelle Babb's team has been making steady progress with a team full of young players and new recruits. Congratulations to Maddie Miller '17! In addition to playing several sports here at Doane, Maddie Miller '17 is a member of the Riverside Bulldogs cheerleading squad. The Bulldogs took 5th place in the National Cheerleading Competition, held at Disney World on December 5. | |
