By Mr. J.D. Walters
Practice and repetition may be the key to creativity and spontaneity even if they might seem like the exact opposite.

"Even the most accomplished masters still do the basic drills on a regular basis. Bruce Lee memorably advised his pupils to perform certain exercises 'to infinity' and said that he was not afraid of the man who had practiced 10,000 different kicks once, but rather the man who had practiced one kick 10,000 times."

PENN-JERSEY CHAMPIONSHIPS: TWICE AS NICE W. Soccer Repeat Champs, Men's Cross Country Runners 1st and 2nd | |
-
 | |
2011 Penn-Jersey W. Soccer Champions
|
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game.
But playing the games right and winning a championship sure feels good!
CROSS COUNTRY
SIRAVO AND HAYNES TAKE FIRST AND SECOND
 | |
Tyler Siravo '14
just ahead of
Gareth Haynes '14
|
Tyler Siravo '14 and Gareth Haynes '14 finished 1st and 2nd twice during the regular season, but could they deliver at the Penn-Jersey Championships at Girard College on October 24?
Not only did the dynamic duo deliver, they set personal records at 18:00 and 18:05, respectively. Their achievements plus the efforts of Vince Pensyl '13, Stephen Klova '14, Alex Mason '14 and John Kubach '14 led the Men's Cross Country team to a 2nd overall finish, bringing home a trophy to Doane, the first for coaches Dave Baldwin (P '10, '14) and Ms. Amanda Smith.
Women's Soccer
 | |
(Left to right) Ziena Ngatchou '12, Elena Zangerle '12 and Mary Brodowski '12 led Doane to a second consecutive Penn-Jersey title.
|
The 2011 Penn-Jersey Women's Soccer Championship game seemed like a replay of the 2010 title match.
Same field. Same rivals. Same result.
But the way Doane Academy's women's soccer team defeated Life Center Academy, 3-2, could not have been more different. The 2010 squad was upperclassmen heavy, with seven seniors in the starting lineup. Coach Mary Ann Bobroski's 2011 team featured three seniors who led a squad of mostly first-years and sophomores.
Sweeper Mary Brodowski '12 repelled almost every incursion into Doane territory. Forward Ziena Ngatchou '12 scored the go-ahead goal in the second-half and striker Elena Zangerle '12 added an insurance tally (her second on the day) at 80:00 that ultimately preserved the repeat championship for Doane.
First-year Kelsey Doell '15 helped the seniors go out champions with two point-blank saves in the second half. The only blemishes on her record for the day were two perfect, curving corner kicks.
Doane's Bleacher Creatures and loyal followers came out in full force, led by Sparty the school mascot. The Men's Varsity Team painted their chests for the occasion and the Doane band rallied the sidelines.
We look forward to seeing the 2011 Championship jackets around campus!

Introducing Doane's New Dean of Admission Ms. Jane Affleck |
 | | Ms. Jane Affleck |
We are pleased to introduce Ms. Jane Affleck as Doane Academy's new Dean of Admission. Ms. Affleck comes to our college preparatory school on the Delaware River with extensive experience in recruitment for an outdoor education program called Wilderness Ventures. She has also spent a great deal of time abroad, including her most recent excursion to the East African country of Uganda.
Ms. Affleck arrives at an exciting time for our PreK - 12 school. Enrollment has risen well over 200 students and the school has taken on a prominent role in the local community.
"Jane's character and leadership development experience gives her a great headstart on understanding and representing Doane Academy," says Headmaster John F. McGee.
An Exciting Time
Ms. Affleck, a graduate of Saint Lawrence University, comes into the Office of Admission with a passion for the school's mission to "know, love and strongly encourage students to reach their full potential."
"Doane is a special community with exciting new developments on the rise," Ms. Affleck says. "With a foundation of rigorous academics, I anticipate a continued commitment to character and leadership development through the expansion of service learning, outdoor and international education, athletics and extracurricular activities, both during the school year and summer months."
"I look forward to helping guide young people and their families toward a school that offers such a versatile and valuable education."
Ms. Affleck succeeds Ms. Susan Gillespie who was instrumental not only in increasing the school's enrollment, but also in facilitating the school's marketing transition from St. Mary's Hall to Doane Academy.

Alumni rivalry, cook-out competition, moon bounces, dunk tanks and splashdowns in the Delaware River.
This year's Homecoming had it all!
Alumni Soccer Game
The school's alumni came out in force this year with some 30 players from five decades suiting up.
But the Men's Varsity had the last laugh in a 5-2 victory.
This year's simplified Alumni uniform ("ALUMNI" front, School Crest on back) has become a hot gift item for the holiday season. If you would like to order a shirt, e-mail Kathleen Keays '88. (Sorry, no medium sizes left.)

Homecoming Tailgate Many entered but only a few could win this year's delicious Homecoming tailgate cook-off competition. Among the winning chefs were trustee Aubrey Haines (P '12, '16, '17) and students Laura Hunt '17 and Christian Wisniewski '18. Kids at this year's tailgate enjoyed not only the traditional tractor ride but a moon bounce, inflatable slide and pumpkin decorating.
Children of all ages had a good time dunking faculty and staff to raise money for the Senior Class Gift. The Class of 2012 can thank math teacher Michael Russell, Communications Director George Mesthos and Headmaster John F. McGee for raising hundreds of dollars in less than an hour.

Headmaster John McGee took a dip for the Senior Class.

 Pumpkin Launch 2.0 | |
The Red Tiger Cannon hit the Delaware River with a 700 foot shot
|
Without a doubt, the main event of Homecoming 2011 was the Spartan Engineering Club's 2nd Annual Pumpkin Chuckin'. This year's launchers expanded from two to three categories with trebuchets (catapults), slingshots and, new in 2011, pressure cannons. Over 60 students on a dozen teams participated in the exhibition of 4" x 6" pumpkin projectiles.
 | |
Team Doane America
|
The Women's Varsity Soccer Rainbow Cannon took the prize for best splash downs in the Delaware River (about 500 feet away). Team "Doane America" earned style points with their star-spangled cannon and custom t-shirts. But the real attraction was the Red Tiger Cannon with laser shots, including one at an estimated 700 feet. The other categories more than held their own. The Freshmen Boys' slingshot nearly tripled their category's longest distance with a shot of 420 feet. (This team's victory was featured in the Marlton Sun.) The Sophomore floating arm trebuchet just barely out-distanced the competition with a 220-foot launch.

Drawing inspiration from the natural world is one special aspect of a Doane Academy education. Doane students have a chance to learn in the great outdoors, especially along our front yard, the Delaware River!
These opportunities come in Discovery courses (PreK-3), special opportunities such as the September voyage on New Jersey's Tall Ship the A.J. Meerwald, "Rocks, Roots and Wings", and field trips for both Lower and Upper School students.
Click here for a glance at some of the new Outdoor Education opportunities Doane Academy students had in the month of October 2011.

SPORTS First Round of NJSIAA Playoffs, Winter Excitement, Outside Honors |
 | The 2011 Middle School
Soccer Team |
Doane's winter sports teams have a tough act to follow. Here is a recap of the season's Spartan action and a preview of winter sports.
Men's Cross Country)
Women's Cross Country
Nyesha White '13 took home 4th place at the Penn-Jersey finals after a strong season. The team will miss seniors Kierra Coleman '12 and Jessica Petkevis '12.
Men's Soccer
Coach Sean Yackel's squad posted a 10-7-2 (4-1 PJAA) record overall.
The team featured a number of outstanding individual performances. Joe Demarco '13 scored 26 goals. Antony Haines '12 brought a cool foot on defense. Stephen Marshall '12 made a habit of going from 18 yard-line to 18 yard-line in a few seconds changing game momentum in the Spartans' favor. Zach Burr '12 and Brian Strauss '12 brought veteran leadership to the team and younger players like John Victor '15 (forward), Tommy Simpson '15 (forward) and Frank Punzi '14 (goal keeper) promise a bright future for the program in seasons to come. Middle School Soccer
Coach Loronz Blackwell's co-ed Middle School team developed far more than its 2-8-1 record shows.
The team graduated five eighth graders Charlie Haines '16 (captain), Carly Hall '16, Cody Hall '16, Shane Platt '16 and Kalimah Shamsid-Deen '16.
We look forward to seeing these Spartans on the varsity pitch! NJSIAA Recap
No one said moving up to state-level competition would be easy.
The Men's varsity hosted Roselle Catholic at home but ran into a squad determined to advance in the Non-Public B playoffs for the first time in 15 years. The 4-2 contest was Roselle's first of three wins before being stopped in the South Jersey semi-finals.
The Women's varsity traveled to Timothy Christian fresh off of its PJAA Championship but could not pull off an upset in a 6-1 loss.
(Both Roselle Catholic and Timothy Christian were ousted by Gill St. Bernard's.)
Men's Cross Country runners Tyler Siravo '14 and Gareth Haynes '14 performed admirably in their NJSIAA debut.

Winter Sports About to Tip-Off For the first time in recent memory there has been a lull in the sports action at Doane Academy. Joining NJSIAA meant that winter sports practices cannot commence until the first Monday after Thanksgiving (November 28) as opposed to the week after the end of soccer as in years past. The winter lineup will feature some old faces in new places.
Jerry Scott (P '14) takes over the reins of the Varsity Women's Basketball program after years of coaching at Ridgway Middle School in Edgewater Park. Sean Yackel has shifted over to Coach Dan Williamson's Varsity Men's staff as an assistant.
At the Middle School level, Michelle Babb (girls) and Justin Cooper (boys) return to the bench. Excitement is building for the new season. Doane students interested in playing who haven't before should contact the team's coach or Athletics Director Justin Cooper. |
