Flag Flown in Afghanistan

for Doane

American Flag
The first grade class received a flag flown over a US base in Afghanistan on September 11 for nine minutes and eleven seconds.

SM Sgt. Daniel Bouchee, father of Gabby Evans '23
presented the class with the flag during a brief time on leave in the US.

Doane Academy has been honored with flags from both Iraq and Afghanistan in recent years.

Our school community deeply appreciates the sacrifice of our families in uniform and feels an even deeper responsibility to take care of their families here on the homefront.
RBIn Memoriam
Ron Bennett
1937-2011
Doane Band Founder

Ron Bennett

The Doane Academy family said good bye to Mr. Ron Bennett during a moving funeral service in the Chapel of the Holy Innocents on September 10, 2011. Mr. Bennett passed away on September 5.

He leaves behind a rich legacy from his decade at
the school (2000-2010) for growing a world class concert program, with a sound that filled (and still fills) the school with warmth, especially during the winter and spring
concerts. More importantly, he left a mark on so many
students with his unwavering energy and enthusiasm. Mr.

Bennett was a passionate, stalwart supporter of everything Doane Academy has to offer

and a dear friend to all
of his colleagues.

New Student Orientation
Can you tell the old Doane students from the new in this photo? Nope? Good!

Doane Academy's new student orientation and sleepover gives Upper School students a chance to get acquainted with the school before that first day. This year's student-designed orientation on August 25-26 was a huge success, with the scavenger hunt (seen here) making its return.

Back-to-School Picnic
Back-to-School Picnic
The Back-to-School Picnic on August 30 was a chance for most students to reconnect after a summer away from each other. Many student leaders like Junior Class VP
Alexa Smith-Rommel '13
and Student Council VP
Jermall Keels '13 spent their summer coming up with a new structure for student government with English teacher Mr. Ran Holeman.

Welcome to the Family!
Family Induction
THIS IS SPARTA!
There has always been something Hogwarts-esque about Doane Academy's

Like the houses Griffyndor, Slitheren, Hufflepuff, etc. our school has the families Hugg, Notman, Martin and so on.

So this year we embraced the Harry Potter parallels with a Family Induction Ceremony on Thursday, September 29.

(Note to visiting alumni, School Families have moved back to Thursdays, instead of Friday.)

Instead of a sorting hat, Sparty placed the "Sorting Helmet" on each new student's head so a voice from beyond could call out their new family. Each family cheered at the sound of a new member, while the Martin family stole the show with their musical instruments and a Roman-style standard.

Like families themselves, it looks like Doane may have a new tradition for years to come!

Back-to-School Night
Back-to-School Night
Hmmm you look a little tall for kindergarten...
This year's Back-to-School night was one of the best attended ever! Thanks to all of our parents, new and returning, for coming to school with so much positive energy and enthusiasm. It definitely rubs off on the students (and, we hope, vice versa)!

HOST A DOANE

INTERNATIONAL

STUDENT!

International Students '10
Doane Academy has received a number of applications from students in Asia and Europe.

We need your help and hospitality to make them feel welcome.

Consider the benefits of becoming a host family:

*Fill an empty nest.

*Provide (ano)the(r) sibling your child always wanted.

*Give your neighbors a way to be a part of the
Doane Community.

*Bring the world into your home.

For more information or to sign up. Contact International Admissions Officer

George Mesthos '05.

NOTE: Host families are provided modest stipends to offset the cost of hosting an international student.

"Up, Up and On to a Great Year!
And this is only the beginning...

  1. Balloon Ride
  1. The Class of 2012 has led an 'uplifting' start to the school year in the face of adversity. Their 'Senior Sojourn' balloon ride was canceled due to weather, but they made it happen during Rocks, Roots and Wings.

A great school year doesn't always start out as planned. Yet the positive energy coming from the halls of Doane Academy is undeniable this fall - even with a few detours.

 ss

SENIOR SOJOURN

The Class of 2012's "Senior Sojourn" looked all washed up when their hot-air balloon ride was grounded by wet weather. Even the"work" of the trip, a service project in Frenchtown, PA, was "unworkable". Instead of pouting, the 16 seniors and their advisers, including Headmaster John F. McGee, embarked on a scavenger hunt challenge with a 50 mile radius that included steps such as "talk to a farmer".

Day1

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Class of 2012 (Day 1)
The Classes of 2012, 2024 and 2025
with Sparty.

By the time the seniors
canoed to school on September 7, their enthusiasm was ready to overflow the banks of the Delaware. Newly-elected Senior Class President Mary Brodowski '12, Vice President and Senior Chaplain
Brian Strauss '12 and Student Council President Brett Keays '13 represented the students during the opening convocation and the band delivered another tour de force Chapel performance.

ENROLLMENT HIGH

One week into school, Doane Academy welcomed its 206th student for the 2011-2012 year,
Shane Platt '16. Shane is the cousin of classmates Carly and Cody Hall '16 (also new to Doane) and alumna Lacy Hall '07.  At 206, the school has its largest student body in nearly 20 years, a sign that the reputation of a Doane education is moving Right Onward.

Team-Building

a team-building exercise.
The month of September reached a crescendo that has yet to end with the school's annual "Rocks, Roots and Wings" program, also known as Upper School Interim. This outward bound-style program sends Doane students into the wilderness to build their classes into teams.

The learning doesn't stop at the classroom door though. Lessons in environmental science, American History and even architecture are woven into the program.

Seventh through ninth grades went to Spruce Lake in the Poconos where they repelled down cliffs and conquered rock walls. The sophomores (Class of 2014) headed east to Long Beach Island (LBI) where the class combined biking, canoeing and art projects with a beach clean-up and lessons about the coastal environment.

Flight 93 Memorial

Flight 93's role in the
9-11 attacks.
The Upper Classmen took meaningful departures on their return to Burlington that will likely stick with them for the rest of their lives.

The Juniors (Class of 2013) went through the traditional Western Pennsylvania gamut of Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water and white water rafting. But en route home their advisers pulled the vans into Shanksville, PA for a visit to the newly-opened Flight 93 Memorial, in this the 10th year since September 11, 2001. It was a solemn and quiet scene as the Doane students read the names of the men and women on that flight out of Newark. Many of them were from New Jersey.

Every senior trip starts out with a similarly solemn study as the class tours Harper's Ferry, WV and Civil War battlefields with Dr. James Paradis, Doane's resident published historian. The seniors went to work on a historical restoration project for the National Parks Service, pounding in fenceposts, as senior classes before them have done.

Then the Class of 2012 launched their senior year in earnest, making up for that aborted Senior Sojourn balloon trip. The seniors and their advisers took off from Balloons Aloft in Pittstown, NJ and came down somewhere in Pennsylvania.

The photos from Annalisa Shanks '12 (see above) show these seniors are ready to make their own legacy their own way and that they will make it altogether!

NewFac2011New Faculty Members
Doane brings in team with wealth of local, global experience
New Faculty Members '11-'12
(From left to right) Julia Workman (Upper School English), Kristin Rusinko (2nd Grade), Meghan Hadalski (3rd Grade).

Doane Academy aspires to add faculty members who have mastered their subject area and are passionate about sharing it. We're pleased that our new faculty members will  help us deliver on the Doane mission to know, love and strongly encourage students to reach their full, unique potential.

Dr. William Yarwood has brought his passion for helping students reach higher education as our new Director of College Counseling. Dr. Yarwood's credentials include a PhD from Temple University in Education Administration and several long term positions, most recently as Director of Guidance at Moorestown High School.

Mr. Patrick Gibbons has already excited the school with his knowledge of chemistry. He comes to us with decades of experience in the North Hunterdon public school district and with  degrees in science and business administration from Rutgers, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Fairleigh Dickinson. Mr. Gibbons feels his relationships with his students are key to his success as a teacher.

Ms. Meghan Hadalski  is responsible for the critical transition third graders make in accepting the challenges and rewards of being serious about learning. Ms. Hadalski earned her undergraduate degree in art/art history at Dickinson and a master's degree in childhood education at Manhattanville College. For the last 3 years, Ms. Hadalski has taught prek- eighth grade in two different charter schools in Philadelphia, after stints teaching in Berlin, Germany and New York City.

Ms. Kristin Rusinko is a familiar face taking over the reins of second grade after teaching Lower School classes in Mt. Holly and Camden. Ms. Rusinko has a BA in French Languages and Literature from the University of Maryland and a MA in Literacy and Reading at Fairleigh Dickenson University. Ms. Rusinko has some proficiency in three languages; French, Spanish and Italian.

Ms. Julia Workman is a crucial addition to Doane's commitment to writing. Doane will be Ms. Workman's first full time teaching position on this side of the Atlantic. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Mount Holyoke with a major in English and a minor in German and earned her master's degree in English Education at Columbia University. She served for two years on the Austrian American Education Commission as a Fulbright English Language Assistant. In addition to teaching full-time English this year, Ms. Workman will help all of our students become great writers in our new afterschool Writing Center, especially our international students who have already benefited from her training in English as a Second Language (ESL).

Meerwald

Voyage Aboard the A.J. Meerwald

PreK, Kindergarten and Mr. McGee wave to the
A.J. Meerwald, crewed by 4th - 6th grades.

Fourth through sixth grades wasted no time diving - or shall we say, sailing - into learning this year.

On September 13, they boarded the A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey's official tall ship, for a trip organized by discovery teacher Ms. Bonnie Smith and supported by Clean Communities grants from Burlington City and County.

Raising the sails on the Meerwald
"Heave, Ho!" Sixth graders hoist the sails of NJ's Tall Ship.

The students learned about the boat's history, then helped the crew hoist the sails with a "Heave, Ho!"

The ship paused long enough outside the school for PreK, Kindergarten, Mr. McGee and some staff members to wave hello.

Then it was back to work!

Girl with microscope
Angelina Maugeri '20 looks into a microscope at the plankton station aboard the Meerwald while Erin Doran '20 looks at a sample.

The crew of the Meerwald set up four science stations to teach the Doane students about the science of the sea. Our students learned all about plankton, cut open oysters to look at their organs and more.

After a couple of hours at sea, the students got back on dry land and walked back to school.

Our students were grateful for the opportunity aboard the Meerwald. After all, how many schools can walk to a tall ship for science class?

Homecoming2011HOMECOMING 2011, OCTOBER 15
Alumni Game
Alumni Soccer Game
This year's Homecoming will be a daylong event with fun for the whole family! All the best elements of Fall at Doane have been combined into one action-packed day with something for everyone.

The festivities "kick-off" with the Alumni Soccer Game. Graduates from last year's seniors to stars of decades ago return to the pitch for a grudge match (all in good fun) against the Men's Varsity (see below), gaining the occasional breather from coaches and staff. The Society of Graduates Squad has outmatched the Riverbank's current occupants the last few years, but this year's Spartans have played with a passion all their own that will be tough to beat. Start time is 11:00 a.m. RSVP on Facebook

Not to be left out, the Girls Varsity will play the Homecoming Game against arch-rival Life Center Academy at 1:00 p.m. Coach Mary Ann Bobroski's team has had an electrifying mix of new players following the lead of seniors Mary Brodowski '12, Elena Zangerle '12 and Ziena Ngatchou '12 that guarantees a fun game for a good crowd.

Pumpkin Festival
Homecoming 2011 will be fun for the
whole family!
The Homecoming Tailgate
will provide sustenance to keep spectators going. True connoisseurs are invited to enter or taste-test for the Cook-Off Challenge. Throughout the day, there will be games, face-painting and even a moon bounce for kids, much like in previous years with the Pumpkin Fest. The Senior Class is also hosting a dunk tank with faculty volunteers to raise money for their class gift.

At 3:00 p.m. the real pumpkin festivities get underway with the 2nd Annual Pumpkin Chuckin'. The Spartan Engineering Club under the leadership of Mr. Michael Russell has been hard at work since the start of the school year on trebuchets and even a cannon to raise the bar from last year. RSVP on Facebook

As if all that weren't enough, then there's the actual Homecoming Dance for Grades 7-12 in the Dining Hall, starting at 7:00 p.m. Attire is semi-formal.

Pumpkin Launch
hotstartHot Start for Spartan Sports
After years of excellence playing in the Penn-Jersey League the Doane Academy Spartans joined the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) in August.

The Spartans have not disappointed with tougher competition. Whatever their records, every
all the teams, cross country, men's and women's soccer and co-ed middle school soccer, have turned in gutsy performances.

Joe DeMarco '13
Joe DeMarco '13

Men's Soccer

Striker Joe DeMarco '13 had been regarded as one of the top soccer talents at Doane, if not in the region. His five goals against cross-town rival Burlington City High School helped the Spartans make an emphatic entrance to state-level competition. Although the team lost 6-5 in overtime, the Spartans held several leads in the game against a public school rival it would have been unthinkable to play several years ago. And DeMarco is among the county leaders in goals scored.

Overall, the men's squad was 5-3-1 (4-1 PJAA) going after a 5-2 win at Girard College on Thursday. John Victor '15 has given the team a viable second scoring option, with Tyler "Speedy" Heupel '14 manning the midfield and sweeper Davis Graham '13 securing the center of the backline on defense. In net, the team rotates between senior Zachery Burr '12 and sophomore Frank Punzi '14 with each one turning in highlight-worthy performances on their days in net. Besides these stand-outs, coach Sean Yackel, in his 13th season at the helm, has a strong starting 11 complemented by a deep, versatile bench, that is large enough to field a few junior varsity games.

As the weather cools down, this men's team looks poised to make this an October to remember as they chase what has been an elusive league title.

Women's Soccer

Coach Mary Ann Bobroski had a tough task ahead of her this season; to come up with an encore to last year's championship season after graduating seven key seniors.

So far so good.

The Women's Soccer team has a winning record at 6-3 (3-0 PJAA) after an 8-1 win over Villa Victoria on Thursday.

A triad of seniors -- sweeper Mary Brodowski '12, striker Ziena Ngatchou '12 and midfielder Elena Zangerle '12 -- has led an athletic and lightly experienced squad. Freshman Kelsey Doell '15 has played beyond her years in net and newcomers such as Christie '14 and Vivian  Okoye '15 have stepped up in their first seasons.

Between the seniors and the newcomers is a stalwart lineup of holdovers from last year's championship team and other athletes who decided to add soccer to their repertoire and join in the fall fun.

Like the men, the women also have their sights set on the postseason and will get a serious test in the Homecoming Game against arch-rival Life Center Academy on October 15.

Middle School Soccer

Coach Loronz Blackwell's middle school soccer team (2-4) may not have a championship to play for but pride is more than enough for the co-ed middle school team!  the team has played with a lot of heart and hustle with lots of new faces coming out to play.

Cross Country

cross country
Tyler Siravo '14

They don't make the paper as often, but the Doane Academy Cross Country team under the leadership of Dave Baldwin (P '10 '14) and Ms. Amanda Smith has had a stand-out season.

The sophomore tandem of Tyler Siravo '14 and Gareth Haynes '14 finished first and second, respectively, in the first two meets (Girard College and Home) and within ten seconds of each other. Their performances propelled the Men's team to 2nd place finishes in those meets.

For the women, Nyesha White '13 finished second and Christiana Sanders '13 fourth in the team's home meet.

With all of the sports running full speed, tune into the next edition of "Write" Onward and check DoaneAcademy.org for up-to-date schedules.

Then come out to cheer on our Doane Spartans!
