Cardboard Boat Regatta
|
 | |
Class of 2013
|
| |
Doane Academy has a new favorite tradition. Bishop Doane's Birthday 2011 introduced the school's first Cardboard Boat Regatta. Students under the leadership of science teacher Mr. Michael Russell took household cardboard, formed it into boats and with the help of paint and some canoe paddles raced against each other on the Delaware River. The Senior members of the Engineering Club took home the prize for longevity, with their boat lasting a half-hour. The Class of 2013 earned honors in the sprint, dusting the competition by 6 seconds with a time of 20.3 seconds. Frank Punzi '14 and Ian Smith '13 combined to win the long distance competition at 56.6 seconds.
The regatta had originally been scheduled for a week earlier at Liberty Lake, but was rained out. Maybe it was Bishop Doane's ghost or sometimes
Mother Nature just knows better!

| Changing Ourselves, Changing the World |
From the Headmaster,
The start of a new school year is a prime time to reflect and project.
We're proud of Doane Academy's growth and improvement over the last several years. It has been a great team effort on the part of the faculty and staff under the leadership of an extraordinary Board of Trustees.
It was the vision and dedication of these people that inspired the commitment of resources from 15-20 major donors and the Rowan Family Foundation, the Susquehanna Foundation and the E.E. Ford Foundation.
The academic program has been strengthened, the campus has been greatly improved and the school's reputation in the community and at the college level may be the best it has ever been in the nearly 175 years since the school's founding.
But...our progress continues to be driven by a healthy level of dissatisfaction with the status quo at Doane, in this region, the country and the world.
After six years of discussions and numerous initiatives, Doane Academy is circling the wagons with regard to character and leadership development. We recently identified an ultimate and unifying goal. Doane Academy is out to Change the World. We are bold and yet realistic in setting this goal because:
- The world desperately needs strong, ethical leadership.
- Some of the biggest changes in the world are inspired by individuals.
- Doane is small and has the time to influence and prepare young men and women in their most formative years.
- The history, tradition and mission of Doane Academy all point to and support changing the world. "Right Onward" Est. 1837
The biggest challenge for all of us comes from the truth in Mahatma Gandhi's statement, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Our biggest challenge this year and perhaps ever in our lives is not to talk our best or even do our best, it is to honestly, positively and consistently move to be our best.
We are called as teachers, parents, friends and family to being the oak tree whose seeds give birth to those who will make a better world than the one they entered. Our children are indeed our future.
We welcome everyone's comments, insights and support. You too can change the world. It all begins with integrity. Be strong, be balanced and be honest with the children.
Respectfully,
John F. McGee, Headmaster

Doane Exceeds E.E. Ford $50 thousand Challenge
$100 thousand for outdoor education programs in school, community, Burlington Island |
 | | Canoe Racing |
The E.E. Ford Foundation
challenged Doane Academy to raise $50 thousand for Outdoor Education programs that would benefit the school, lead to more community programs and promote learning activities on Burlington Island. If successful, the Foundation offered a matching grant up to $50 thousand, for a total of $100 thousand.
The school met and exceeded that goal raising $50,076 by July 31, 2011 with another $600 arriving after the deadline. (Doane Academy is still accepting donations toward outdoor programming that will be marked down as E.E. Ford, even though the challenge has been met.)
 | Rocks, Roots and Wings
September 19-22, 2011 |
The E.E. Ford challenge has already borne fruit for Doane. Donors for the grant - particularly the Class of 2011 families - enthusiastically sponsored each of 16 new red canoes for $500 each. The canoes and their trailers have enhanced the school's outdoor programming and are poised for use on Burlington Island. The new canoes were used for the 2010 Senior Sojourn.
Outdoor Student Leadership has become a Doane trademark. Doane's co-curricular Rocks, Roots and Wings program (left) has pushed students to test their leadership skills and use their intelligence in real-life problem solving situations.
On July 20, a dozen Doane student leaders used the canoes to teach the 7th grade class at LaSalle Academy (a Christian Brothers/Sisters of St. Joseph school for underprivileged youth in Philadelphia) how to paddle. The outing was a chance for Doane Academy students to act as mentors and for the LaSalle students to not only learn something new but to be exposed to another school culture of respect and achievement like their own.
To all the friends and family who have endowed a bright future for Doane outdoor education and leadership:
Thank You!
 | Two Academies, one day of fun.

The 174th Commencement
|
 | |
The Class of 2011
|
The bell tolled 25 times, the Scarborough Gates opened and a short while later Doane Academy had officially sent each of its newest graduates to college.(Full list below)
This year's graduating class, a collection of strong (and strong-minded) individuals, left its mark on Doane Academy with more expected in the years to come. John McGee said in his Commencement Address, "This will be the most successful class in school history."
Eric Blow '11, recipient of the Head Boy Cup, was selected by his peers to give the Class Speech. Eric will be attending The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) for electrical engineering "Here at Doane people expect, encourage and celebrate us every step of the way," he said. (Watch Eric's speech here)
Stephanie Piscitelli '11, Class Valedictorian and recipient of the Ivy Leaf (Doane's highest honor to a graduating senior girl) saluted her teachers with her Valedictorian address. "At Doane, we have had the privilege of getting to know teachers on a personal level more than any other school," said Stephanie who will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts."They prepared us academically for the road ahead." (Watch Stephanie's speech here.)
The 2011 Commencement Speaker was musical composer turned internet entrepreneur Howard Yermish, a graduate of Cherry Hill East. "So I challenge you to choose from the abundant variety of options on either side of your path," Yermish said in closing. "And don't forget to smile." (Watch Howard Yermish's speech here)
We expect to see those smiles visiting us back at Doane in the near future!

DOANE SUMMER ACADEMY Pilot program takes off | |
Doane launched a pilot 'Summer Academy' program this year to carry the Doane Curriculum into the other two months of the calendar.
 | |
Mr. Russell demonstrates balsa wood bridge construction to his Summer Academy class.
|
A number of students took advantage of music lessons and personal tutoring sessions (such as SAT Prep) offered well below market rates. A contingent of current and prospective students in grades 5-12 have been pioneering Mr. Russell's Introduction to Engineering program. The success of this year's pilot program will mean expanded offerings in Summer 2012 made available to current and prospective students as well as other children whose connection to the school will be almost exclusively through the summer program. Information on Doane Summer Academy 2012 will be made available in January 2012. |
| Mark Keays Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing |
 | | The putting competition proved a challenge even for seasoned athletes like Athletics Director Justin Cooper (above). |
Doane Academy's First Annual Scholarship Golf Outing on July 25 raised $12 thousand from over 100 golfers and company sponsors.
The event was hosted at Willow Brook Country Club with the help and generosity of the Willinger (Parents '07, '10, '12) and Kaurene (Parents '03, '05) families.
This year's tournament was dedicated in honor of Mark Keays, the husband of Kathleen Keays '88 and father of Brett '13 and Andrew '18. Mark died suddenly in May. He was an active member of the Spartan Sports Booster Club and generously supported Doane and his wife's work, first as longtime President of the Society of Graduates and then as Development Director.
Expect the scholarship outing to become a summer fixture for Doane Academy.

Doane Academy Joins NJSIAA
Spartans can now compete for state championships
|
The little school that could has moved up to the big league.
As of August, Doane Academy is the newest member of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).
The Spartans will join the Non-Public B pool for state tournaments. All varsity sports, except Crew, are scheduled to compete in NJSIAA.
NJSIAA membership will mean a number of changes for Doane Athletics.
- Tougher competition
- Eligibility for state titles and
all-county recognition - Eighth graders cannot compete at the varsity level
- Stricter eligibility
requirements - Longer sports season
- Example: the state soccer tournament is in November. The PJAA season ends in October.
Doane will still compete in the Penn-Jersey Athletic Association(PJAA).
Moving up to the state level is a testament to the efforts of Spartan athletes and coaches for the last decade and the hard work of the Athletics Department, especially Athletic Director Justin Cooper.
"Joining NJSIAA," Mr. Cooper said,
"is a great opportunity to have our athletic program recognized by the county and the state."
Now comes the hard part: playing and winning against tougher competition.
 | Spartan sports teams have brought home a number of PJAA titles.
The new challenge: competing for state championships. |
