Interim on
Immigration
|
 | |
Lower School students did a reverse migration to Ellis island to learn more about the history of US immigration on April 12.
|
|
Students in grades 4 - 6 visited Ellis Island on April 12 to enhance their study of immigration to the United States.
They participated in a program entitled, "Shore to Shore," an interpretive tour with hands-on activities that developed the students understanding of the trials and tribulations many new immigrants experienced.
We also went to the Statue of Liberty and were able to climb to the base of the statue.
On April 26th, interim continued with a trip to the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia to see the play entitled,
"Ellis Island" and bring the study of immigration to life.

SERVICE TRIP TO GUATEMALA 2011
Doane Academy Spartans Get Far More Than They Give
|
Doane Academy sent nine students under the leadership of Spanish Teacher Ms. Alyssa Jerdon to Guatemala on a Spring Break service trip (April 16-23). It was the first such international foray for the school.
It won't be the last.
The Doane Academy trip, with three chaperones, partnered with the non-profit organization Hearts in Motion [HIM] to carry out a host of service projects: distributing 1,000 pounds of donations; delivering prosthetic parts for the non-profit Range of Motion Project [R.O.M.P.]; painting a health clinic in Gualan; pouring cement for a new HIM garage; feeding mal-nourished children.
 | | The trip's first stop was a nutrition center for infants. |
The students on the trip were: Ryan Dronson '11, Mckel-Pratt Hyppolite '11, Tyrees Smith '11, Zach Burr '12, Ziena Ngatchou '12, Paige Parker '12, Brian Strauss '12, Rachel Willinger '12, and Elena Zangerle '12.
In conversations with their parents, peers and teachers, the same theme comes out. Each one of these students received so much more than they gave and the experience changed their lives.
The first assignment of the trip - visiting a health center - moved several of the girls to tears. It was an emotional experience for all involved. Tyrees Smith '11 bonded with a newborn boy he held but never learned the name of. "I left my heart in the hands of that boy that day," Smith said, during the Trip Presentation on May 16.
Watch the Presentation YouTube video here.
The bulk of the trip was spent in the impoverished state of Zacapa. The Doane students came to know extremely poor people with rich spirits from the four-hour drive out of the airport to the last project.
"You could see how badly they needed the donations and how much they appreciated it," Paige Parker '11 told the Burlington County Times. "You could go to their villages and see how bad off they were." Read the Burlington County Times story here and the version picked up by MSNBC here. "The students got exactly what I wanted them to get out of the trip," said Ms. Jerdon, better known as senorita to her students about the transformational experience.
"This is a proud moment for Doane Academy," said Headmaster John McGee, at the end of the May 16 presentation.

FOUNDER'S DAY 2011
Class of '61 Commits to Chapel Restoration on 50th Reunion
|
 | Bishop George Washington Doane |
Founder's Day 2011 (May 6-7) celebrated the old and the new at Doane Academy from the registration table to the swearing in of new Society of Graduates officers.
Jean Lendvay '61 and Shannon Tucker '11 teamed up on name-tags and corsages in the Fisk Portico on a Saturday blessed with sunshine and a breeze.
This year's Founder's Day had a particular emphasis on the Chapel of the Holy Innocents. The organ was removed in February for a more than $100k refurbishment. (Follow the restoration on Patrick J. Murphy's facebook page.) The chapel itself is due for a restoration of approximately $250k.
The Class of 1961 attended Founder's Day and Alumni Weekend in force. Their contribution to the chapel, led by Alice Fisk '61, is meant to address the East Wall. The demolition of the Infirmary/Annex and Nelson Corridor has left the east entrance of the chapel exposed, with a new handicapped ramp there making its debut on Founder's Day. The initial plan is to replace the ramp with an entrance reminiscent of the Fisk Portico.
 | Neal McTighe '96 processes out of the chapel. PHOTO: Gabbi Perrottet '11 |
Preserving the Chapel will need the will of all the school's alumni.
"For the next 1-2 years," Headmaster John McGee said. "We ask that our alums focus attention and resources on the total restoration of the Chapel of the Holy Innocents."
To learn more about how you can support the chapel, download our Donor Info Sheet. You can donate online via Pay Pal.
The Alumni Weekend drew familiar faces and stories of their projects to campus. Al Mattei '84 shared his website Top of the Circle (field hockey) with cocktail party attendees Friday night. Neil McTighe came for his 15-year reunion and spread the word (and the sauce) about his new venture "Nello's Italy" based in Raleigh, North Carolina.
 | | The outgoing SOG President Jackie Bak '76 (r) and Vice President Ryan Ellis '05 (l). |
2011 marked a changing of the guard for the Society of Graduates (SOG). Jackie Bak '76, Incumbent President (2008-2011) and Art Department Head, and Vice President Ryan Ellis '05 handed the gold alumni medal to Chance Van Sciver '88, Doane CFO and former SOG secretary/treasurer. He will be joined by Vice President Joe Garamore '85, treasurer Kathleen Keays '88 (Doane Director of Development and former SOG President) and secretary George Mesthos '05 (Doane Director of Communications).
Many thanks to the Bak Administration (2008-2011) for its hard work!
This year's Alumni Softball Game had to be called off to avoid diverting players and fans from the Varsity Baseball team's annual game at Waterfront Park (Home of the Trenton Thunder).
Thus was born the 1st Annual Alumni Home Run Derby!
Stacy Mullen '96 (former Dean of Admissions) and Fred Mirsky '74 (former SOG President) pitched to an All-Star field with Joe Garamore '85 edging George Mesthos '05 and Ryan Ellis '05.
Mark your calendars for the 175h AnniversaryFounder's Day and Alumni Weekend May 4-5, 2012!

Fling Out the Banner!
|
 | |
Doane Academy's New Look
|
| |
Doane Academy's new sign is a popular addition, if the facebook response is any indication. Friends and alumni bombarded the Doane Academy facebook page when this photo was posted of the gold letters that replaced the white banner attached to Odenheimer after the school's re-branding in spring 2008.
The Class of 2012 has pledged to raise the $10k for the sign's
design and installation by Wurz Sign Systems.
One recent alum joked, "Fling out the Banner" in reference to Bishop George Washington Doane's 1848 hymn.

RIDE ONWARD
More than $20k raised for Faculty Scholarship Fund
|
 | | Christina Cecchi '85 with family and Headmaster John McGee |
The 3rd Annual Ride Onward Scholarship Bike Challenge brought more than 50 riders out for the 30, 50 and 100-mile legs. Another 20 junior riders followed the two-mile circuit under the watchful eye of Kurt Hendricks.
Gareth Haynes '14, Tyler "Speedy" Heupel '14
and Jason Peterson '14 joined Doane Academy Headmaster John McGee for the 100-mile trip.
Mr. McGee says he and the 2014 squad plan to go 200k and raise $200k in the next two years.
Special thanks to Kohl's and 4th grade teacher Stacy Anderson for coordinating the Ride Onward Springfield Rest Stop.
If you still owe some pledges or want to contribute to the Doane Academy Faculty Scholarship fund, you can make your payment via PayPal.

| INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE DAY |
 | | Naimi Patel '14 |
Doane Academy went off to Spring Break in style with International Language Day, April 15.
The cultural offerings spanned the globe with parent presentations and student dances from Greece, Puerto Rico, India and Haiti.
After a broad buffet of international cuisine, a live Latin band led to a conga line of enthusiasm.
"We are excited to expose our students to other cultures so they come to respect and love them," said Spanish teacher Mrs. Evelyn Montalbano.

QUIET RIOT!
Environmental presentation teaches respect for self, others and earth. |
 | | Quiet Riot has been entertaining and educating for over 30 years |
The two-man "Quiet Riot" team brought their entertaining mix of mime, sound effects and story-telling to the Doane Academy gymnasium in Planet Earth and our connection to it. All of Lower School attended. The Mettler Brothers Bill (Executive Storyteller) and Dave (Person in Charge of Noises and Opportunities) give about 270 presentations per year and have entertained more than 5,000 audiences since 1978.
The presentation was provided in partnership with Burlington County and Burlington City through a Clean Communities grant. The mime, story-telling and sound effects show not only gave the students a good laugh, it taught them lessons like how recycling a water bottle is good - avoiding using a water bottle at all is better. Quiet Riot pointed out what Doane Academy is already doing to help the environment - including shifting away from disposable plates in the school dining hall.
There was a more general message than environmental responsibility at play."The general theme of all our work is to get across three ideas," said Dave Mettler. "Respect for self; respect for others; respect for our environment, whether it's our community or our outdoor environment." |
TRI-CITY ROTARY LUNCH
Doane welcomes Burlington, Bristol, Willingboro and friends from Brazil |
 | Doane hosted three Rotary chapters and a contingent from Brazil on April 14. |
Doane Academy welcomed three Rotary Clubs - Burlington, Bristol and Willingboro - and a presentation of Rotarian visitors from Brazil for a luncheon in the campus dining hall on April 14. Over 100 people attended.
The Class of 2011 hosted the event, with Cassie Torres '11 acting as Master of Ceremonies.
The event had an international feeling with the Rotary Group Study Exchange group from Brazil, led by Wellington Sales da Rocha, representing (or "showing off" as they said) their hometowns and country, host of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.
The event was one reminder of how Doane Academy's ties to the community have grown with an eye to even bigger things.
"It's always good to have more people know that Burlington, Bristol and Willingboro have a great college prep school," said Headmaster John McGee. "And of course ultimately we're trying to change the world."

| SPRING CONCERTS |
 | | Andrew Keays '18 on trumpet |
Doane is alive with the sound of music. Lots of music.
The Upper School Chorus, Concert and Jazz bands performed on May 17.
The selection spanned centuries of music education from Mozart to Sousa to Miles Davis and the Beatles.
Instrumentally, the highlight of the evening were improv performances by musicians such as Josh Ireland '11, Brett Keays '13, Vincent Pensyl '13, Gareth Haynes '14, Alex Mason '14, Jason Peterson '14, Nyesha White '14 and John Victor '15.
"The improvisational skills of our Doane students made its debut at this show," said band director Mrs. Adrienne Mazar, "and was well received."
Lower School serenaded parents and friends at their Choral Concert on May 24.
It marked the second performance for the newly formed 15-member Lower School Concert Band (Grades 4-6 with a helping hand from two 2nd graders).
"They performed a repertoire that was well-above their years and did it well," said Mrs. Mazar. Zachery Farquhar '17, Ariana Cobb '18, John Hampson '18, Andrew Keays '18, and Paul Baynard '19 each delighted with their solos. Special thanks to Kevin Gilliam '16 for assisting the Lower School band members.
Both shows featured an impressive synergy between Doane Academy's vocal and instrumental talents.
Students who have been studying piano and strings will have their turn on stage at their Spring Recital, May 31. If you missed the two concerts join us at the Recital and support our Spartan musicians! |

TOUGH SPRING FOR THE SPARTANS
| |
Softball
|

| 2011 Softball captains (left to right) Gabbi Perrottet '11, Mary Burdowski '12 and Becca Perrottet '11 |
All good things come to an end. The Varsity Softball team's 11-12 first-round loss to Girard College in the Penn-Jersey playoffs epitomized a tough-luck season that saw the Lady Spartans' string of championships halted at 4 (2007-2010). Pitcher Mary Brodowski '12 turned in a gutsy performance in the loss.
Coach Sean Yackel's 2011 squad battled through a slew of injuries, rain-outs and close losses to a 2-10 record (2-2 Penn Jersey).
Kelsey Markowitz '11, Taylor Monaco '11, Becca Perrottet '11 and Gabbi Perrottet '11 leave behind a strong legacy of three championships in their four high school seasons. Fans can look forward to underclassmen like Kelsey Doell '15 who rose to the occasion in 2011.
 | | The Lineup may have been senior heavy in 2011 but underclassmen like Chris Scott '14 prepared to carry the baseball team on the mound for years to come. |
Baseball
After a 3-2 start, the baseball team cooled off, going 1-9 the rest of the way for a final record of 4-11 (3-5 Penn-Jersey).
Ryan Dronson '11 led the team with a .592 batting average and 4 home runs. The Spartans will have to replace half of their lineup with seniors Dronson, Eric Blow '11, Ben Gross '11 and Tanner Hill '11 graduating.
Mr. Justin Cooper, baseball coach and athletic director, developed a young pitching staff including Chris Scott '14, Matt "Puma" Czyzewski '14 and Trent Eastman '15 that we will see more of in the future.
Great Start for Middle School Softball Team
The inaugural season of Doane Academy middle school softball was a hit! Amanda McCourtie '15 and Jenna Walker '15 led the 6-8th grade squad, which put in solid scrimmage performances for a first campaign. The most encouraging sign is that the girls can be found teaching other girls how to play catch during every free moment on any rain-free day.
Doane parent Mr. Jim Fine (P '17 '19 '23) coached the middle school squad.
Crew
The Doane Academy rowing team spent the spring refining technique and building strength with water practices. New team members have begun learning how to apply their skills on the ergometer to the water.
"I look forward to a larger, more experienced team in the fall," Mr. Tim Henderson, Crew Coach and English teacher, said. "All members of the rowing team have expressed aptitude in this demanding, but rewarding, sport."
Currently, 14 Spartans make up three 4-man boats (2 boys, 1 girl).
