Doane Spring Musical: Bugsy Malone

March 18-20

Ticket Order Form

The Upper School is excited to announce this year's Spring Musical selection: Bugsy Malone. In this adaptation of the hit film that catapulted a young Jodie Foster into stardom, the Upper School cast will play Prohibition-era mobsters in this tongue-in-cheek tribute to the 1920's gangster flick.

Math, Science and Engineering Fair

 April 7
All of Lower School will be participating and Upper School student participation is voluntary. Don't think Upper School will go home early though. One-third of Upper School students are members of the Engineering Club, a sign that Doane is well on its way to achieving its goal of increasing enthusiasm and interest in math and science.

Doane welcomed four new students in the second semester, including Samantha Egan (2nd grade), Ashley Hall (7th grade), Niami Patel (9th grade), and international student, Janghyuk Cho (9th grade).

Janghyuk  joins us from South Korea and expects to stay with Doane through graduation. He likes baseball and is participating in the Spring Musical, "Bugsy Malone." Janghyuk's arrival is another sign that Doane's international programs are expanding and we look forward to having even more international students next year.  If you are interested in hosting an international student for the 2011-12 school year, please contact Sue Gillespie at sgillespie@doaneacademy.org

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

mlk2011.1

Martin Luther King Day (January 17, 2011) was no day off at Doane Academy. More than half of the Doane Community participated in service projects benefiting the Masonic Home, Easter Seals, Sisterhood, Inc. and more. A number of guest speakers and performers were not able to attend the opening Chapel service and other activities but other Doane members, like the choir, stepped to the plate.

For more information, check out  Burlington County Times coverage of our event.

Feathered Friends of Doane Academy

owl release

Doane Academy made a feathered friend, if only for a little while, on January 20. A female great-horned owl was released back into the wild on Doane Academy's soccer field. It was a fitting return to the wild for an owl who had gone through weeks of rehabilitation after crashing into a soccer net elsewhere. Jeanne Gural, the Executive Director of the Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in Medford, released the owl. Inspired by the owl's departure, Lower School decided to collect 100 items to benefit the Refuge and mark the 100th day of school. Lower School and Doane Acadey's band collected 133 items showing Doane certainly gives a hoot!

The Doane Academy Spartans only got to see the owl for a few minutes.  So the John James Audubon Society came and did a presentation in the

gymnasium on February 10. Students were able to see owls "Sitting

Bull" (great-horned) and "John Adams" (Eastern screech) spread their wings and flash their t

alons. Carrie Ashley of the Audubon Society and two assistants also talked about how owls adapt to their environment, a useful skill in the wild and at school!

To see more on the owl release, check out the coverage in the Burlington County Times.

Gareth Haynes, Class of 2015, auditioned and successfully made it into South Jersey Region III Band on clarinet. This is the first time a Doane Academy student has been part of regional auditions and their symphonic band. In a tough competition, Gareth placed 17th out of 68 competitors.  Only the first 33 spots were selected to participate in the South Jersey Region III Band at Rowan University.

This January, Gareth performed in the 65th Annual All South Jersey Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band Concert as a member of SJ Region III Band.  In support of Gareth, Father Haynes, Mrs. Mazar, Mr. Bennett and Ashley Sadar '05 were in attendance. Congratulations, Gareth!

Taking Stock:  Teacher InService and Senior Class Retreat

team buildingOn February 11, the Faculty visited 15 different peer schools while the Seniors held a leadership seminar at the Red Dragon Canoe Club in Edgewater Park.

The Faculty InService (perhaps more of an outService) gave Doane teachers an opportunity to observe best practices and new ideas elsewhere while representing the school and sharing ideas of our own.  Locations included well established peer institutions such as Moorestown Friends and Burlington City High School and new schools such as Renaissance Charter School. Teachers noted that many of their peers were interested in the new programs Doane has implemented since the last time they made the rounds.

"We want people to know," said Headmaster John McGee, "that Doane Academy is an educational resource and we're not going to keep our light under a bushel basket."

The senior seminar was an opportunity to take stock of the projects and responsibilities they will undertake in their final semester. "I want the seniors to know that they are an integral part of what we're doing," Mr. McGee said. Facilitators from the Institute for Education at Samaritan Hospice lent a helping hand.

"Across the board it was an opportunity to take a look at what we're doing and what we need to do to make it better," Mr. McGee said.

Doane Gets Off to Hot Start at the Burlington County Academic Tournament

academic team

Doane had the rest of the Burlington County Academic Tournament on the run. At lunchtime on Saturday, February 12, Doane Team 1 sat atop the field by almost 400 points. The playoff phase was less kind, with a match-up against the eventual champion, Lenape 2 squad.

Doane Team 1 still took home a trophy for a third place finish and  the more junior, Doane Team 2, cracked the 1,000 point mark.

A Day of Drawing

day of drawing

Taylor Sentman '14 and Catherine Baldwin '14 work at their easels during the day of drawing.

Doane artists received a world-class day of instruction thanks to the school's partnerships in the art community. Studio Incamminati lent two instructors and two models to teach 37 students in classical drawing at a special session, 'The Day of Drawing', hosted at the Burlington Lyceum on February 16.

Studio Incamminati is the product of Doane parents, Nelson Shanks, a world famous portrait artist whose work includes Princess Diana and President Bill Clinton, and his wife Leona, a renowned artist in her own right. The Herman T. Costello Lyceum Hall for the Arts is an art advocacy, exhibition and teaching space located in the old Police Barracks on High Street in Burlington. Shaun Stipuck of the Lyceum opened the space pro bono to the Doane Arts students who had already raised hundreds of dollars to build their own easels just like the artists at Studio Incamminati use.  Doane Academy's easels were designed and constructed by our own Mr. Joe Sieb, using wood from the old gym bleachers.

day if drawing 2The Doane students had to perform as if they were in a real studio. For the ninth through twelfth grade students, that meant three hours of charcoal drawing. They soon found that standing for that long with arm extended was a feat of human will. The reward though, was an artistic experience in classical art that many highly trained art students and professionals have never had themselves.

"The kids had a great time," said art teacher Jacalyn Bak '76. "They want to do it again. The instructors enjoyed working with our students and would like to return."

Mrs. Bak says the Day of Drawing was only the beginning of years of partnership.

February: Black History Month

readin logoLower School took part in the 22nd National African-American Read-in. Ms. Bonnie Smith, Doane's Library Coordinator, hosted the read-ins during visits to the Katherine Potts Library during the last days of February. African-American authors included Virginia Hamilton, Rosa Parks and Julius Lester.

Mrs. Mesthos's Short Story class read poems by African American poets on February 28. The program included a filmed interview with Willie Shuler Sr., grandfather of Jermall Keels '13, and remarks by Dr. Paradis and Mr. McGee, who recommended the students read The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson.

Spartan Sports: Winter Wrap up and Spring Outlook

Varsity Boys Basketball

Chris Scott '14

All four Spartan squads posted winning basketball seasons in 2010-2011.  With spring around the corner, the softball, baseball and crew teams are preparing to step their games up a notch.

Varsity Boys Basketball finished their season at 9-9 and earned a Penn-Jersey playoff spot. The boys' first round exit against Life Center Academy (35-53) did little to dampen a year of success. "We played together. We shared the ball," coach Dan Williamson said. "I'm very pleased."

Varsity Girls Basketball finished the regular season at 9-7,  including a 3-0 stretch to end the season. The Girls sprinted to the finish in their playoff quest but also made an early exit, losing to Solebury 30-39 in round 1.

Varsity Girls Basketball

Elana Zangerle '12

Middle School Boys Basketball had another "fantastic year." Coach Justin Cooper's boys posted a 9-3 record. 8th graders Trent Eastman, Tyler Allen, John Victor and Tommy Simpson will hopefully transfer their success in middle school to the varsity level next year.

Middle School Girls Basketball overcame a three game losing streak with a four game run to finish their season at 6-5. The 25-10 drubbing of Moorestown Friends sent eighth graders, Kelsey Doell, Amanda McCourtie, Mary Jo Sieb and Jenna Walker off on a high note.

Looking ahead as spring sports practices begin ...

Varsity Softball goes into 'Spring Training' on the hunt for a fifth consecutive Penn-Jersey title.  The 2011 campaign begins with a scrimmage against TCHSA on March 23, with opening day set for April 4 against Phil-Mont Christian, and the home opener slated for April 8 against Villa Victoria.

Varsity Baseball is looking to build on its powerhouse offense with a stronger

spring on the mound and in the field. The boys will also travel to TCHSA on March 23,

Middle School Girls Basketball team takes a break from play to speak with Coach Babbs

with opening day on March 30 against the George School, and the Home Opener (at Willingboro Memorial Elementary School Field on Van Sciver Parkway) against International Christian on April 5.

The Crew Team is enjoying a terrific season.  The athletes all made great improvements this winter and are excited to demonstrate their new skills on the water.  The combination of new faces, new equipment, and a new venue will make the spring season a fun and competitive time for all.
