A Perfect Start to the Holiday Season! | |
On Thursday, November 18th, Doane Academy held our 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. The student body, faculty, staff, and special guests (including members of the Board of Trustees and part of the McGee Clan visiting from Minnesota) all gathered together in the Dining Hall to give thanks and to share in a full turkey dinner with all of the trimmings. As the School Families entered the Dining Hall, several of Mrs. Mazar's Upper School instrumental music students entertained the gathering as they waited for all of the School Families to arrive and be seated. The students sat together with their School Families. When all of the School Families and guests were seated, first, Mr. Cooper and then sixth grader, Rebecca Patterson, each led the gathering in a Thanksgiving Prayer.
Following the prayer, the actual meal started in earnest. Designated students from each Family went to the kitchen to get their Family's mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, vegetables, and cranberry sauce. At the table, an Upper School Family member carved the turkey - many getting last minute "YouTube" instructions. By the way, one of the "parents" of each of the School Families cooked the turkey the night before. From all reports, everyone had more than enough to eat, including dessert brought in by members of the Family.
The entire meal, from entering the Dining Hall to cleaning up, lasted about two-and-a-half hours. The interaction of the Upper School members of the School Families with their Lower School "siblings" was a joy to see. Just picture 5, 6, and 7 year olds, staying seated and occupied for that length of time and you can understand why Doane Academy embraces School Families and being a true PreK-12 school.
The Doane Academy School Family had a lot to be thankful for on this day, and they shared some of that by having their leftovers - yes, there was some - sent to the Burlington City Home for Aged Women. Students also brought in canned goods for this occasion and they were donated to the Palmyra Methodist Church Pantry which serves residents of Burlington County who are in need. |
| Doane Engineering Club participates in First Annual Pumpkin Launching Competition |

The Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving now holds a new tradition at Doane Academy. As this year the Members of Doane Academy's newly founded Engineering Club participated in the school's first annual Pumpkin Launch competition. Over a three week span,thirty-five Upper School students worked in teams to construct 7 gourd-hurling launchers . The launchers varied from classic trebuchets and ballistas to more unconventional models using surgical tubing and bungee cord.
Lead by Upper School math teacher and Engineering Club advisor, Michael Russell, the pumpkin launcher project was designed to encourage students to take a hands-on approach to engineering design. Russell, new to the teaching profession, brings real world experience to the classroom. He worked as field engineer in Texas gas and oil fields before joining the Doane faculty this fall. According to Russell, "students encountered the basics of gravity, projectile motion, momentum, and stored energy during the construction and troubleshooting of their launchers".
The teams competed for longest and mots accurate launches. The results for this year's competition include; Most Innovative: Truck Mounted Sling Shot (E. Blow's team) Crowd Pleaser: Red Trebuchet (A. Minton's team) Most Accurate: Neon Green Sling Shot (Mrs. Mazar's team) Best Distance: Black Surgical Tubing Sling Shot (B. Keay's team).

| Give Meaning for the Holidays | |

The Lower School faculty are encouraging students and their parents to get into the true spirit of Christmas with gifts to people and causes that really matter.
We hope some folks will opt to make a gift to Doane in honor of someone they love and respect. A wish list of possibilities will be e-mailed and published for distribution before Christmas. We have tried over the last several years to significantly reduce the "nickel-dime" requests for funds and/or fundraisers, but we do need parent participation (% of donors, more than dollars) in order to impress foundation and corporation support. The percentage of faculty, parents and trustees on the donor list at year end (June 30) is the #1 indicator of a school's positive culture and institutional health. The $50,000 E.E. Ford Foundation match, which we were awarded last spring, has a deadline of July 31, 2011 for us to qualify for the full $50,000. To date we have received $15,000. Foundations are especially interested in inspiring faculty and parent support. They will look very carefully at our performance when we are applying for another grant in 3 years.
"Give Meaning to Christmas" We hope you will include something in our stocking here at Doane along with all of the other worthy causes that depend on good people like us.
Please review Doane Academy's Wish List.
