NC PREVENTION PARTNERS, PFIZER, CHARLOTTE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, and FIT CITY CHALLENGE JOIN FORCES TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES TO REDUCE PREVENTABLE HEALTH CARE COSTS
CHAPEL HILL - May 6, 2010 - NC Prevention Partners (NCPP) with support from Pfizer, Inc. launched a three year employer wellness partnership today with the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and the Fit City Challenge that will guide businesses on how to build healthier workplaces, healthier employees, and reduce preventable health care costs.

"Many companies offer wellness, yet are frustrated because they are missing the employees who may benefit the most," said Meg Molloy, President and CEO of NC Prevention Partners.  "We guide businesses to shift to an organizational focus, including critical executive level strategies that establish a culture of wellness, and fundamental prevention policies that support employees to be tobacco-free, make good nutrition decisions, and routinely get physical activity.  This provides a wellness environment in which all employees participate and succeed."

The Charlotte Prevention Academy Class of 2010-2013 will begin a three year change process by reviewing initial feedback on a confidential Prevention Report Card on their current mix of wellness practices from NCPP's signature WorkHealthy America (WHA) product. They will understand how their practices compare to the robust scientific standards, to other businesses in their community, and to businesses of their size and sector.  They will leave with tailored action plans and tools to reshape their workplace policies and management strategies.  Academy members will be supported with ongoing access to the WHA's on-line toolboxes, and webinars to learn how to implement key policies and share best practices. As they make changes, will have ongoing opportunity to reassess their practices and view how their Report Card grades are progressing.

"It's a win-win proposition. We support any effort that benefits not only the overall well being of people employed in Mecklenburg County, but also of the businesses they work for. It just makes good financial sense" said Bob Morgan, president of Charlotte Chamber of Commerce.

The Charlotte Prevention Academy is the second of a series of four community Prevention Academies led by NCPP and supported by Pfizer.  The series began in Greensboro in March, and future Academies will be held in Alamance and Asheville.  More information may be viewed at http://www.ncpreventionpartners.org/preventionacademy.

"One of Pfizer's commitments is to advance wellness and prevention," said Carl Wilbanks, Pfizer's regional president, southeast.  "We are proud to work in partnership with NC Prevention Partners, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Fit City Challenge and local businesses to offer the Prevention Academy to businesses of all sizes and establish a strong prevention framework in Charlotte.
