Blue Ridge Healthcare Celebrates Red Apple Status
Red Apple Blue Ridge Healthcare (Grace and Valdese Hospitals) recently celebrated their designation on the Healthy Food Environment (HFE) in Hospitals project as a Red Apple facility. The wellness team at Blue Ridge Healthcare works extremely hard to create and maintain a culture of wellness for the system.  In regards to the celebration, Debbie Knight the System Director, Wellness Service Line says "It was great!  Our CEO Mr. Wood traveled to both campuses to serve our employees at lunch; our wellness coordinator rolled out our WELLWORx punch card and had many free items from the dietitians and showed our new icon to direct employees directly to the menu items for the week etc.  I was bouncing around from each campus, dressed in a red apple costume, giving away apples and sharing our direction with HFE.  Buttons that read, Ask Me about Eating Healthy were given out as we explained the initiative!"

The team began its push for implementing a healthy food environment by creating a quick film and posting it on YouTube to educate employees and the public on the initiative. NCPP is extremely excited to see the great work Blue Ridge is doing to promote healthy behaviors; they are truly a shining example of hospital excellence.

Monthly Hospital Conference Call a Success
WHA 13 hospitals from around the state participated in NCPP's monthly hospital conference call on September 1, 2009. During the call, hospitals completed the section covering the employer's role in a Quit-Tobacco System on the new Work Healthy Assessment.

The assessment is now live and ready to be completed.
Currently, 15 hospitals have finished the employer component of the Work Healthy Assessment.

The Work Healthy Assessment is a simple online tool that evaluates healthy policies in the workplace and guides employers to help their employees quit tobacco, eat healthier and exercise more. Through our grant with The Duke Endowment, the assessment, which is valued at $1000 for access, is available free to NC Hospitals.

If you are interested in completing the employer component, or have any questions regarding the Quit-Tobacco System initiative, please contact
Heather Mountz at
heather@ncpreventionpartners.org or 919-969-7022 ext 210.
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Visits NCPP, Healthy Food in Hospitals Initiative Receives National Recognition
Vegetables The CDC recently visited NC Prevention Partners to learn more about the great work and success NC hospitals are having with the healthy food in hospitals project.  Dr. Brook Belay, Senior Service Fellow with the CDC came to discuss the healthy food model and its success in gaining momentum here in NC.  The visit was a timely one as the healthy foods project was recently reviewed by a panel of national obesity researchers and approved for national dissemination by the Center of Excellence for Training and Research Translation.  This is really exciting news for NCPP as the project is one of few recognized by the Center as an evidence-based intervention for obesity prevention.  Let's keep up the good work NC hospitals; you are truly setting an example for promoting worksite wellness and healthy living.

Starting the Conversation Series: Spotlight on Healthy Eating
STCnutritionThe Starting the Conversation (STC) on Healthy Eating is a brief screening and referral tool for healthcare providers to assess patients' readiness to make healthier food choices. The tool includes questions that evaluate eating habits and access to the critical elements of a healthy diet. It also helps dismiss any false assumptions the patient may have related to healthy eating.  NC Prevention Partners also offers STC tools on Physical Activity (English / Spanish), Quitting Tobacco (English / Spanish), Blood Pressure (English / Spanish) and Cholesterol (English / Spanish). To view a sample and order the STC on Healthy Eating or any other tool in the series, go to Starting the Conversation.
