Hospital Conference Call: Focus on Employer Role in a Quit-Tobacco System
WHA Please mark your calendar for the next statewide hospital conference call on September 1, 2009 from 9:00-10:00am.
We will provide a tutorial on our new online Work Healthy Assessment. It is a simple online tool that evaluates healthy policies in the workplace and guides employers to help their employees quit tobacco, eat healthier and exercise more. Through our grant with The Duke Endowment, the assessment, which is valued at $1000 for access, is available free to NC Hospitals. The assessment will help you put all of the pieces of worksite wellness together and identify clear action steps for continuous improvement in all three prevention focus areas.

During the tutorial, we will walk through the section of the Work Healthy Assessment that evaluates an employer's role in helping employees quit tobacco.

It is recommended that a wellness representative be present for this conference call.

WFUBMC Open House a Huge Success!
Open House Thanks to all of those that attended the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Healthy Food Open House on August 18th.  More than 60 people representing 24 hospitals, US Foodservice, Sodexo, ARAMARK, Morrison's Management Specialists, and other project partners got the chance to see a healthy food environment in action.  The team at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center along with our Centers of Excellence did a great job showing the benefits of implementing the core principles of the Healthy Food in Hospitals project.  Special thanks to the foodservices and ActionHealth teams at WFUBMC for their contributions in providing delicious, healthy meals and informative tours. ASAP Bringing Local Foods to NC Hospitals
ASAPlogoHospitals have the potential to act not only as a resource to treat the sick, but as a community role model for proactive healthy choices.  Featuring fresh local foods and offering food and farm related educational programming both improves public health and sustains farms.  Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) helps create and expand local food markets that will preserve our agricultural heritage, provide access to fresh, healthy food, and keep our farmers farming.  ASAP also has a strong educational component designed to build positive relationships with fresh local food through cooking classes, field trips, and gardens.  In 2009, ASAP is conducting a pilot Farm to Hospital program in Western North Carolina, offering a range of services to hospital food service, administration, staff, patients, and the community. This pilot program, funded through the Golden LEAF Foundation, includes services such as Local Food Guides distribution and support sourcing local food. ASAP also consults on educational programs such as cooking classes, wellness programs, field trips, marketing and promotions.
