Congratulations to First 25 Red Apple Hospitals!

Annual Meeting Photo1The Healthy Food in Hospitals team would like to congratulate the first 25 hospitals to be honored with the Red Apple Award last week at our 2009 Annual Meeting & Awards ceremony.  Nearly each of the 25 sent a representative to accept the award which made for a great photo (see image).  We are very proud of you and your accomplishments and want to thank you for all the work you have done in providing healthy, affordable and delicious meals to your customers.  You all are truly paving the way for the foodservice world in making conscious, healthy and delightful eating an easy choice in your facilities.  Your customers, employees and patients will all benefit from your leadership and commitment to the Healthy Food in Hospitals project.

Congratulations Fax Referral Challenge Winners!

FR Challenge WinnersNCPP's first Fax Referral Challenge to the N.C. Tobacco Use Quitline began in July 2008 and ran through April 2009.  The Challenge encouraged hospitals to make use of this important tool and over the past 10 months, referrals to the Quitline have tripled.  Last week, at our Annual Meeting in Chapel Hill, the winners were recognized for their outstanding efforts and plaques were given to the top large, medium, and small hospital as well as the hospital with the highest percentage of accepted calls.

Congratulations to our winners!
Large Hospital:
Carolinas Medical Center
Medium Hospital:
Carteret County General Hospital
Small Hospital: Chowan Hospital

Our next Fax Referral Challenge will begin on July 1, 2009.  To learn more about the Challenge and how to participate, please view our

Exciting News: Online Recipe Exchange Coming Soon!

Healthy FoodWe are very excited to announce the development of our online recipe database and exchange tool!  We will be working extremely hard over the summer to develop a web site that will allow you to logon, search, submit and comment on healthy, delicious recipes.  We want to give you an opportunity to not only share your recipes but to take advantage of a wide range of ethnic, vegetarian, local, seasonal, heart healthy and trendy recipes to offer in your cafeterias! We believe that this database will not only help you provide and introduce great tasting meals but will also help educate your customers with the nutrition information that will be provided as well.  This will be a one-of-a-kind tool and we want to request your help in getting it off the ground. Please send any and all recipes, comments, suggestions or questions to Julie Knaack, our staff Nutrition Consultant.
Starting the Conversation: Spotlight on Healthy Eating

STCnutritionThe Starting the Conversation (STC) on Healthy Eating is a brief screening and referral tool for healthcare providers to use to assess patients' readiness to make healthier food choices. The tool includes questions that evaluate eating habits and access to the critical elements of a healthy diet. The tool also works to rule out any false assumptions the patient may have related to healthy eating. NC Prevention Partners also offers STC tools on Tobacco Cessation, Physical Activity, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol. To view a sample and order the STC on Tobacco or any other tool in the series, go to Starting the Conversation. Please email Heather Mountz for more information, heather@ncpreventionpartners.org.
