A closer look at homeowners' insurance
The recent rash of natural disasters has left many homeowners questioning the level of protection they receive under their current homeowners' policy. At Soucy Insurance, we want to make certain that all of our customers under their insurance package and receive the highest quality coverage available.
A standard homeowners' policy will typically cover the structure of your home, your personal belongings, liability protection, and additional living expenses. In order to help you better understand your coverage, below is a brief synopsis of what is not covered under a standard homeowners' policy:
- Flooding is not included in your homeowners' insurance. If you live in a high-risk flood zone, you do not want to bewithout adequate coverage. Even a rainstorm can causebasement flooding, which can significantly damage your home, requiring costly repairs. Go to www.floodsmart.gov to determine your home's flood risk and speak to your insurance agent about flood insurance coverage.
- Earthquakes also are not covered under a standard homeowners' policy. Earthquake coverage can be added as an endorsement to your homeowners' policy. Earthquake insurance will cover major losses but often has significant deductibles.
 - Mold, termites, and other infestations are not covered under homeowners' insurance. However, you can minimize your risk by using air conditioners and dehumidifiers to keep the humidity level in your home between 30 and 60 percent. You may also want to consider putting exhaust fans in the kitchens and bathrooms, and we recommend that you avoid installing carpet in damp areas.
- You can expect to see limitations in theft coverage for jewelry, furs, silverware, guns, and money. If you have any of these special items, you'll want to consider adding an endorsement or floater to your policy.
