PMI Melbourne Chapter Newsletter

Newsletter 052December 2010
Greetings!

Welcome to the December edition of the PMI Melbourne Chapter newsletter.

Several items to wrap up the year:

  • Thank you to those who were able to attend the PMI Melbourne Chapter End of Year Celebration! It was a great event and we hope it was enjoyed by all.
  • We are excited to announce the speakers for events early next year. Please note the venue has changed for the February and March events. Both events will be held at the State Library of Victoria located at 328 Swanston Street, Melbourne.
  • One of our newsletter editors, Annie Sheehan, unfortunately will not be available to continue volunteering for this role next year onwards. We thank Annie for her contributions as part of the Communications Team. If you are interested to volunteer for this role, please contact the Communications Director.

We hope that you have enjoyed our newsletters through 2010. We wish you all the best for the holiday season and a great year in 2011 with plenty of achievements. Remember your feedback is always welcome; we like to hear back from you. Thanks for being part of the PMI Melbourne Chapter community.

From the President's Desk

Lynda BourneI would like to take the opportunity to wish all members and friends of the Melbourne Chapter best wishes for the 2010 festive season. It is a time for family and for looking back over the past year and also for making optimistic plans for the New Year.

For us the greatest achievement for 2010 was an increase in membership to almost 1500. This fantastic result builds a strong foundation for more growth in 2011 and with that more services to our members. We are asking our members to provide us with feedback and ideas on what additional services and support we can provide, not only to retain existing members but also to attract new members.

Our monthly meetings continue to attract healthy crowds, providing opportunities for our members to network and also to increase their knowledge through topics presented by speakers from all backgrounds of interest to project managers. We plan to continue these events, but also offer others such as information days to assist members in preparing for job interviews and writing successful resumes. We are also planning some breakfast meetings and other events suggested by members.

Our PMP and CAPM preparation training is also popular - providing a service to members, raising the Chapter's profile in the project manager community and a source of income to the Chapter which can then be used to provide more services to members. Our training partners, Project Smart and Mosaic Project Services also offer short courses to assist our PMPs to maintain their credentials.

Our large group of volunteers have been instrumental in helping us achieve these things - PMI is an organisation that depends on volunteers to provide services to members. And for us in the Melbourne Chapter these volunteers are our life-blood. So thank you volunteers for your valuable contribution to our success.

Finally I want to acknowledge the contributions of all the Directors of the 2010 Board, to thank each one for their support and for the work they have done to ensure that the Melbourne Chapter provides the best support and services possible to our members.

So all the very best for a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year

Lynda

2010 End of Year Event

The enchanting atmosphere of the historic Chapter House was the venue for PMI Melbourne Chapter's final meeting for 2010, held on Tuesday, 30th November. The event provided the perfect opportunity for PMC members and friends to relax and enjoy each other's company over a few drinks and delicious food. During the early part of the evening we were entertained by Burgundy Brown who filled the large venue with the exquisite sounds of harp, cello and drum.

EOY 2010-1The Event's guest speaker was Rob Gell whose presentation was entitled 'Solid Proof - The Future will be Expensive' . Rob, who is an outstanding communicator and a passionate environmental campaigner, held the attention of the 130+ audience for around 40 mins. Some key take-outs in his presentation were the urgent need to change our attitudes to this planet, we do not have another one we can escape to and the answer to reducing our footprint, is not more feet. Rob encouraged those present to use their PM positions to demonstrate leadership and responsibility in the community by speaking to people and standing up for our beliefs.  During his presentation, Rob shared a Tandberg cartoon with the slogan "but.. we can't afford to change". Rob's challenge to us is that we cannot afford not to change.

During his presentation Rob referenced several books and articles which would all make worthwhile reading. The pdf version of Rob's presentation is available on the Chapter's website.

EOY 2010-3Following Rob Gell's presentation, Members of the PMC Board took the opportunity to thank the many volunteers who have worked so hard during the year to make the PMI Melbourne Chapter the success it has been during 2010.  During the second half of the evening we were once more treated to the delightful sounds of Burgundy Brown, while the champagne continued to flow and plenty of delicious finger food was handed around.

Thank you to Leonie Ashton and her team of volunteers who worked together over many months to make the event the success it was.

CCR PDU Categories are being updated

PMI has an exciting update for you regarding improvements to the PDU structure within the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Program.

Background

PMI commissioned a major study of the CCR Program in 2007 which identified key areas for enhancement. The first enhancement was the development of PMI's in-house reporting system (CCRS) which launched in August 2009 and the in-sourcing of the operations and management for CCR. This initial enhancement has received positive feedback from PMI stakeholders.

The second proposed enhancement was to improve and simplify the Professional Development Unit (PDU) category structure for ease of reporting. In preparation for making the PDU category structure enhancement to the system, PMI did a formal study targeting PMI credential holders, PMI Registered Education Providers (REPs) and Community Leaders presenting the new categories and asking for their feedback.

As indicated by the findings from this study, the proposed new CCR PDU categories were positively received and PDU updated category structure implementation will begin on 1 March 2011.

The Upcoming Changes

Between now and 1 March 2011, PMI is requesting that credential holders register their existing PDUs in the CCR system under the current PDU categories. After 1 March 2011, credential holders will need to report PDUs using the new categories.

Key changes to the program include:

  • Simplification to the CCR category structure, reducing the number of categories from 18 to 6
  • Ensuring that all categories use the rule that one hour of learning activity is equivalent to one PDU
  • Expanding the categories to include Web 2.0 learning opportunities
  • Adding limits on certain categories to require that all credential holders pursue project management continuing education as part of maintaining their credential

It is also important to note what is not changing in the program:

  • The three-year renewal cycle and number of PDUs required to maintain the credential will remain the same
  • The re-certification fee structure will remain the same

Please take a moment to read through the FAQs and the New PDU Category Structure and Policies document on PMI.org for more detailed information about this update.
