A member's reflections on "Let's Talk Coaching" I wanted to share my impressions from the chapter meeting on Tuesday 27 July 2010. I really enjoyed Heiner Karst's "Let's Talk Coaching" presentation. Heiner is a successful and experienced coach. His PM experience at Siemens made his presentation particularly relevant to PMI members.
Some of Heiner's simple yet powerful concepts: - Successful people tend to have specific goals
- 'Who's driving your bus?' and the importance of proactive attitude in life
- People with presence. Surprisingly, this can be taught!
- Financial success is not what you make, it is what you keep
- Why activity-driven goals are more effective than results-driven goals. Commit to activities that lead to achieving your goals
- Financial growth cannot get ahead of your personal growth. Invest in personal development
- Adding value starts with your attitude. Attitude drives behaviour, which, in turn, drives achievement
- Listening skills - earn the right to speak!
- Diplomacy and the language of influence. Replacing statements with questions
- Do your homework before negotiating
- Many people are reactive, like thermometers. Strive to become a 'thermostat' and be an agent of change!
Finally, Heiner paraphrased Henry Ford, saying that whether you think you can or you can't do something - you are right.
I would like to say a special thank you to Heiner for a great presentation which provided plenty of food for thought and, hopefully, influenced some of us to pursue further personal development. Bob Anisimof, PMP

Corporate Community Celebration
Terrence E. Deal and M. K. Key in their book Corporate Celebration: Play, Purpose, and Profit at Work state:
"In authentic celebration, people are willing to step out of their daily routine, drop their outer masks, and be fully present in the occasion: being a part (we) and also being apart (me). In the experience of we is the collective sense of family, inclusiveness, communion, belonging, connection, solidarity, a common purpose, vision, and values. We cannot be complete as individuals unless we are deeply involved in community."
We all, at some stage in our lives, experience the need to celebrate who we are and to satisfy our need for belonging. This need is deeply rooted in our psyche; a need which has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years. A major milestone in our evolutionary path was the instigation of ritual, symbolism and celebration. Ancient communities used this to define their identity and their relationship both to each other and to the land in which they lived. Celebrations and rituals were also used to mark the patterns and cycles of nature. They cared deeply for the land because it was the key to their continued existence. Many of us living in first world countries have lost our connection with the land and with it a natural sense of belonging which was strengthened and reinforced through regular community gatherings and celebration.
The PMI end of year event is an opportunity to re establish our sense of belonging and to connect with others who share our desire to celebrate both our achievements and the coming of the holiday season. To inspire us to reconnect to the environment as well as each other PMI has engaged Rob Gell to speak at our event. Rob has been quoted as "... an outstanding communicator and a passionate environmental campaigner who is respected for his approach to sustainable development".
Increased knowledge and understanding and hence preparedness to act is often gained through interaction and conversation with those who inspire us. So enjoy an opportunity to pull back and look at ourselves as this larger team of people who truly work together toward our common purpose.
Therefore, please mark your calendars that the Melbourne Chapter's end of year event that will take place on Tuesday, 30th of November at the Chapter House located at 197 Flinders Lane, Melbourne.
Bookings will be open at our website very soon and we hope to see you all at the event.
Come, join in, 'unmask', network and celebrate. |
