APCI draw your attention in this newsletter to the AGM which is on February 24th.  As part of the AGM, new Board Members are elected, and there has been a Nominations Committee working through the applications.   The Nominations Committee report is presented below for the information of members prior to the AGM.

There will also be a Chapter presentation following the AGM on the 24th (see details below).

We have also scheduled a special meeting on 19 February (see details below) to allow interested members the opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions to the Board in regard to the Chapter's new web site, to help planning improvements and budget for the year ahead.

I hope those of you who were able to attend enjoyed the last PMI event of the year. The event had a great turnout and a good time had by all.  (picture below)  I am excited about another fantastic year of PMI events starting with our first monthly Chapter Event on Tuesday 24th February.

PMI logo

Monday 2nd February 2009
Background
As provided in Clause 23 of the Chapter Rules to Nominating Committee set
criteria for the selection of nominees that include the following:

  • willingness to devote time and effort as an officer of the Melbourne
          Chapter;
  • sufficient length of membership with the Project Management Institute;
  • experience as a Project Manager; and
  • personal attributes.

Nominations closed on the 15th January 2009.  Since that time the Nominating Committee has reference checked all candidates, conducted interviews and assessed each of the nominees against the aforementioned requirements and a more detailed set of criteria focused on developing the overall capability and capacity of the Board. Therefore, as part of its deliberations the Committee also assessed each candidate's commitment to:

  • being both a PMI and a PMI Melbourne Chapter member of good standing;
  • read and accept the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct;
  • work in a collegiate, team orientated manner to foster positive and proactive outcomes for the benefit of members;
  • regularly attending the Chapter monthly events;
  • attend a minimum of 75% of Board Meetings per calendar year;
  • participate in a number of regular chapter portfolio meetings that may include teleconferences every 2-3 weeks.  These will normally be held outside of normal business hours;
  • providing a statement to confirm they have a solid understanding of project management principles and experience as a project manager;
  • follow the processes and procedures defined by the Board; and
  • being eligible to be a Company Director in Australia.

The following nominees have been assessed by the Nominations Committee as meeting all of the above criteria:
      Gavin Best;
      Thereoyam (Simon) David;
      Kimberley Martin;

      Lindsay Whitehead

And, the Nominating Committee recommends these five candidates to the membership for election to the PMI Melbourne Chapter Board.

How can Engineers better engage with the Society they Serve?
 - presented by David Schmidtchen
Globalisation and technology have opened access to information and knowledge on an unprecendented scale. Acccess to rick sources of information is leading to changes in our behaviour, our expectations and most importantly our relationships. The traditional professions such as law, medicine, and engineering were established during an era when our access to information and our social relationships were vastly different from today. Today, all professions have come under increasing public scrutinity and some are struggling to connect with the society they serve. All professions are under pressure to adapt.

Djarragun College Volunteers
Djarragun

Dear Colleague,

I am writing to tell you about an unusual but exciting volunteer project that Proton is involved in on Cape York in Far North Queensland, and to see if you might know anyone who would be interested in taking on a truly unique challenge. This opportunity has come to light through Proton's growing involvement with IEP (Indigenous Enterprise Partnerships). IEP facilitates corporate and philanthropic support of indigenous communities in Cape York, primarily in partnership with Cape York Partnerships. IEP and Cape York Partnerships form an important part of Proton's Community Support Program which offers direct and practical pro bono assistance to worthwhile Australian initiatives.

Djarragun College is establishing a new foster centre for children who are relocating from a number of remote communities on Cape York. The new centre will be built on land adjoining the current College campus in Cairns, and will accommodate up to 50 children.

Please drop me a line if you would like to know more about indigenous programs on the Cape or Proton's involvement with these programs.
Kind regards,

Peter
