March 8 Board of Trustees Meeting Update

In addition to adopting proclamations that designated April as Community College Month and National Poetry Month, the board also approved the academic calendar for summer 2012; the academic calendar for 2012-2013; the academic calendar for 2013-2014; and the academic calendar for 2014-2015.

Along with the approval of these calendars, the board also voted to begin recognizing Presidents' Day in February as a college holiday instead of Lincoln's Birthday. This will begin in the 2012-2013 academic year.

JJC Chosen to Host National Student Horticulture Event - Volunteers Needed

JJC will host students from over 60 colleges and universities for the Professional Landcare Network's (PLANET) 35th Annual Student Career Days March 17 through March 20.

The three-day event, which will be held on the college's Main Campus, invites horticulture students from across the country to demonstrate their skills in real-world, competitive events, in addition to the chance to participate in a career fair and networking events.

Each year, PLANET estimates around 900 students participate in the event. PLANET, an international professional association, chose JJC for the location of their event due to the college's facilities and offerings geared towards students enrolled in horticulture programs.

Volunteers are still needed to help with the event. If interested, please contact Lisa Perkins at ext. 2387 or lperkins@ jjc.edu.

A Healthy Alternative to Coffee in the Afternoon?

Professor shares Green Smoothie Recipe

Looking for a healthy alternative to coffee or carbonated sugary drinks?

Catherine Anderson, professor of hospitality management, says green smoothies are a healthy alternative that can help boost your immune system and mental performance.

Green smoothies are just one of several food options that will be discussed at the upcoming Healthy Chefs Meeting on March 30, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in J-0016 on the Main Campus.

Kristen Gurnitz Bernier, a raw food nutrition educator, will be on hand to discuss the raw food movement and how it can affect your body. She will also be demonstrating how to make juices and green shakes.

Can't wait until the meeting? Here's a recipe to try: Green smoothie recipe

Mark for Safety Challenge Winners - Lockport Township High School

Students from Lockport Township High School won the Mark for Safety Challenge last month, an event sponsored by JJC, the Three Rivers Education for Employment System (TREES), the Keep Going for Mark Brockett Foundation, and local high schools.

The college hosted the challenge, which was developed in an effort to raise awareness of safety issues along State Route 53 from the I-80 interchange south to Doris Ave. where Mark Brockett was killed in August 2009. Brockett, a coach and teacher at Lemont High School, was tragically killed in a pedestrian/vehicle accident while walking on Route 53 (Chicago Street), under the railroad viaduct in Joliet.

You're Invited: Facility Services Building Grand Opening

The college community is invited to attend the grand opening of the Facility Services Building on Tuesday, Mar. 29, at 4 p.m. in the new building, which is adjacent to the J-Building on the Main Campus.

The LEED Silver (pending certification) facility is home to the college's custodial, maintenance, environmental safety, planning/construction, roads/grounds, and facility scheduling staff.

The project was funded as part of the 2009 Illinois Jobs Now program through the Illinois Capital Development Board. The new building replaces the 40-year-old green temporary buildings that had previously housed the Facility Services functions.

Recognitions

JJC nursing faculty members Danielle Lisiecki, Lynn Noell, and Shannon Jarot established the college's first nursing honorary society, Alpha Delta Nu, this year and helped host an inaugural induction ceremony for JJC nursing students on Feb. 19.

Alpha Delta Nu, the statewide honorary society for associate degree nursing students, was formed in fall 2010. Schools in Illinois who belong to the Illinois Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (IOADN) are eligible for membership. The society was based on the long-time honor society which Prairie State College offered to their nursing students.  JJC is the Delta Chapter. Currently there are nine chapters in the state.
