JJC Faculty Spotlight: Kerry Lane

My name is Ericka Wellner. I'm currently a part-time student at JJC and an intern at the college. This is my story about full-time instructor Kerry Lane and the positive impact she has had on my life.

In the mid '90s, most of Kerry Lane's days were spent reading and writing to prepare her for a future career in law as a student in Loyola University's Liberal Arts program. Nearly two years into the program, she met a professor-someone she now considers a mentor-and was inspired to explore a different career path.

Three summers ago, Lane was my English instructor at JJC. I was taking the English course as a pre-requisite for an associate degree. I was simply trying to earn a degree and hoping for some clarity along the way. Walking back into a classroom stirred up feelings of trepidation and anxiety.

I had not been in a classroom since attending the American Academy of Art three years before. I entered the room, found a desk and made every attempt to conceal my growing angst; then walked in Kerry Lane.

Bricks Made of Recycled Tires, Plastic Make up Paths in JJC Formal Garden

JJC used bricks made of 2,685 reclaimed scrap tires and 86,000 reclaimed plastic containers to build the walkways in the formal garden near the new Greenhouse Facility.

What does a college offering a greenhouse management program need most? A greenhouse, of course. And if a college is going to construct a new greenhouse, why not a green greenhouse - one that meets LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards from the U.S. Green Building Council?

So it is that Joliet Junior College became the first community college in the nation to boast a greenhouse registered for LEED-NC (New Construction) certification.

The Greenhouse Facility, which had its grand opening in April 2010, includes three separate greenhouses, a multi-purpose classroom, gardens with a courtyard and walkways, and bioswales for storm water management.

JJC Chamber Singers, Chorale to perform in New York

Openings available for additional singers

Spencer

Joliet Junior College's choral ensembles have been invited to participate in the world premiere performance of contemporary composer Mark Hayes' "The American Spirit" at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall in New York City on May 29, 2011.

This new work, based upon the writings of Henry David Thoreau, is one of over 700 published pieces by Hayes. The Joliet Junior College Chamber Singers and Chorale are directed by JJC Fine Arts Professor Philip Spencer.

"The Joliet Junior College Chamber Singers and Chorale received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers and the exceptional recommendations given by Philip Spencer's choral colleagues,"  Dr. Jonathan Griffith, artistic director and principal conductor for Distinguished Concerts International of New York, said.

There are a few openings remaining for additional singers from the area to join the JJC chorale in this five-day New York City residency next May.

For more information, contact Spencer at (815) 280-2225 or by email at pspencer@jjc.edu.

Public Astronomy Talk: Mysteries of the Dark Universe Nov. 8 at JJC

University of Chicago cosmologist Dr. Edward "Rocky" W. Kolb will present "Mysteries of the Dark Universe" on Nov. 8 from 5 to 6 p.m. on the Joliet Junior College Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. This event is free and open to the public.

According to event organizer and JJC astronomy professor Dr. Noella D'Cruz, astronomical observations suggest that most of the mass of the universe is in a mysterious form called dark matter, and most of the energy in the universe is in an even more mysterious form called dark energy. This means, D'Cruz said, that 95 percent of the universe is missing.

Dr. Kolb will explain how observations suggest the existence of dark matter and dark energy, and how unlocking the secrets of dark matter and dark energy will illuminate the nature of space and time and connect the quantum with the cosmos.

The lecture will be held in room D-2001, and refreshments will be available at 4:45 p.m.

For more information, contact Noella D'Cruz at ndcruz@jjc.edu or (815) 280-2572.
