Public Astronomy Talk: Mysteries of the Dark Universe Nov. 8 at JJC
University of Chicago cosmologist Dr. Edward "Rocky" W. Kolb will present "Mysteries of the Dark Universe" on Nov. 8 from 5 to 6 p.m. on the Joliet Junior College Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. This event is free and open to the public.
According to event organizer and JJC astronomy professor Dr. Noella D'Cruz, astronomical observations suggest that most of the mass of the universe is in a mysterious form called dark matter, and most of the energy in the universe is in an even more mysterious form called dark energy. This means, D'Cruz said, that 95 percent of the universe is missing.
Dr. Kolb will explain how observations suggest the existence of dark matter and dark energy, and how unlocking the secrets of dark matter and dark energy will illuminate the nature of space and time and connect the quantum with the cosmos.
The lecture will be held in room D-2001, and refreshments will be available at 4:45 p.m.
For more information, contact Noella D'Cruz at ndcruz@jjc.edu or (815) 280-2572.
