White Store Update: Demolition Scheduled After Asbestos Removal Complete

Before JJC can implement plans for a new City Center Campus and bring hundreds of students to downtown Joliet, college officials are working through complex plans to salvage materials and remove several areas of asbestos from the 102-year-old structure that currently stands on the site of the new college campus.
The demolition of the White Store, located at 235 N. Chicago St., and subsequent building of a new campus on that site is a multi-pronged process, Tammy Rust, JJC vice president of administrative services, said.
First, a contractor for the demolition process is expected to be chosen by the end of October. But before the demolition can begin, the contractor must remove asbestos throughout the 40,000 square feet of space in the four-story White Store building.
"There is a building paper between the wood floors and subfloor, and that paper is asbestos," Larry Bacher of Gilbane Building Company said in his Oct. 12 master plan presentation to the JJC board of trustees. "So what we need to do is carefully remove the wood floor and then remove the paper."
Demolition is scheduled for November, but may push intoJanuary, due to the complexity of asbestos removal. A ceremonial groundbreaking for the project is scheduled for mid-December at the site.
Bacher added that the demolition contractor will also advise the college on how to reuse or recycle materials from the building. In addition, materials still in the building -including somefurniture, fixtures, and a marble sink-will most likely be sold in a public sale, scheduled sometime before the end of the year.
Rust added the college plans to save some brick from the current structure and the white enamel panels and neon sign on the front of the structure.

MyJJC Portal Launch to Faculty Oct. 25
With the upcoming launch of myJJC Portal to college faculty, the college's Information Technology division will host several demo sessions to introduce the portal and its features.
The myJJC portal will be officially launched to all faculty members beginning Monday, Oct. 25, with students given access to the portal in the spring 2011 semester.
Reservations for demo sessions can be made by emailing Beth Richardson at erichard@jjc.edu with your preferred session time and date. Reservations are not necessary, but seating will be limited.
The portal will ultimately serve as the college's intranet, placing the college's online resources in one convenient location. While the current launch of the portal will not affect any current work processes, the myJJC portal will eventually become the only place to access information currently found in eResources and Colleague.
See demo session schedule
Benefits of the myJJC portal include:
· Improved communications to the college community
· Single sign-on to WebAdvisior/eResources, iCampus, Outlook calendar, Imaging, and Colleague - this means you'll only have to sign on once to have access to several of our major Web applications
· Easy and convenient access to information both on and off campus;
· Targeted and personalized information;
· Online collaborative workspaces for departments, committees, and other groups, with features such as document sharing, group calendars, discussion areas, announcements, and picture galleries;
