White House Community College Summit Video
On Oct. 5, Dr. Jill Biden hosted a Community College Summit at the White House to address important issues facing two-year institutions and to highlight the critical role community colleges play in higher education.
As many may have read, Dr. Proulx sent an email invite encouraging the campus community to take a moment and view the opening or closing sessions of that summit. For those that missed it, here is the closing session and transcript.
In addition, prior to the summit, the White House asked for video submissions documenting how community colleges have affected people's lives.

MyJJC Portal Launch to Faculty Oct. 25
With the upcoming launch of myJJC Portal to college faculty, the college's Information Technology division will host several demo sessions to introduce the portal and its features.
The myJJC portal will be officially launched to all faculty members beginning Monday, Oct. 25, with students given access to the portal in the spring 2011 semester.
Reservations for demo sessions can be made by emailing Beth Richardson at erichard@jjc.edu with your preferred session time and date. Reservations are not necessary, but seating will be limited.
The portal will ultimately serve as the college's intranet, placing the college's online resources in one convenient location. While the current launch of the portal will not affect any current work processes, the myJJC portal will eventually become the only place to access information currently found in eResources and Colleague.
Benefits of the myJJC portal include:
· Improved communications to the college community
· Single sign-on to WebAdvisior/eResources, iCampus, Outlook calendar, Imaging, and Colleague - this means you'll only have to sign on once to have access to several of our major Web applications
· Easy and convenient access to information both on and off campus;
· Targeted and personalized information;
· Online collaborative workspaces for departments, committees, and other groups, with features such as document sharing, group calendars, discussion areas, announcements, and picture galleries;
· Strong integration into Datatel Colleague allowing users to see their notifications within their myJJC homepage.

Sustainable Building Resource Fair at JJC Oct. 20
Building on a growing series of community events on sustainability, Joliet Junior College will host its second Sustainable Building Resource Fair on Oct. 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. This public event will provide information on how to build and remodel green, and what resources and services are available. According to event organizer and JJC Professor Maria Anna Rafac, the fair will offer information for both residential and commercial building. "I think we're at a point where people want to know more about what it means to build green and how to do that," Rafac said. "The college wants to be a resource for the community." This event is sponsored by the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction programs at Joliet Junior College and will be held on the T-Building concourse. JJC Faculty Exhibition Through Oct. 29

The Fine Arts Department will host a JJC faculty exhibition through Oct. 29 in the Laura A. Sprague Gallery on the Main Campus.
The Studio Art Faculty Exhibition includes various works of oil paint, drawing, photography, mixed media sculpture, ceramic sculpture and jewelry by faculty members Ann Blaas, Beverly Decman, Eric Gorder, Scott Johnson, Elise Kendrot, Joe Milosevich, Gary Schirmer, Steve Sherrell, and Lloyd Wassenaar.
An open reception will be held today, Thursday, Oct. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. The gallery, which is located on the second floor of J-Building, is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

JJC Student Spotlight: Zak Cottrell
Current JJC Student Trustee Zak Cottrell admits if it weren't for his grandfather's motivation, college would not have been an option for him.
After struggling to graduate from Joliet West High School, Cottrell enrolled at JJC. In January of 2009, he came to the college with an undecided major and little else than the desire to fulfill his grandfather's wishes. However, less than a year later, Cottrell is earning an associate of arts, studying pre-med and in April was appointed student trustee. Why did you choose JJC?
After graduating high school, enrolling in college was the next step-that's what everyone does. When I came to JJC, I didn't have a major decided. I didn't have any direction. My grandfather had always told me to continue my education, even if I was unsure about what I wanted to do.
Then down the road, my dad suggested I study nursing, so I joined the program. After two semesters, my instructors recommended I study pre-med. I thought I might as well go for the big cookie. In high school, I failed biology and chemistry. I felt like a failure. But the instructors here are so passionate-it radiates. They made me want to learn. As much as I was putting into learning, they were giving back.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
For the month of October, JJC employees are encouraged to go Passionately Pink for the Cure to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer.
Participating is simple. Just wear pink (item of clothing) on every Friday throughout the month of October and make a donation of $5 or more to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

JJC Theatre Opens Season with "Noises Off" in October
The Fine Arts Department's first production of the 2010-2011 theatre season, "Noises Off," will be held Oct. 7 through Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m., and on Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus.
Written by Michael Frayn and directed by JJC Professor Tammy Perkins, "Noises Off" is not one play but two: simultaneously a traditional sex farce, "Nothing On," and the backstage drama that develops during the play's final dress rehearsal and tour.
The two plays begin to interlock as the characters make their exits from Nothing On, only to find themselves making entrances into the even worse nightmare going on backstage.
In the end, the two plots can be kept separate no longer and collide into a single collective nervous breakdown.
The cast of "Noises Off" includes Leon Briick, Robert Culp, Faith Berry and Sylmarie Soto of Joliet; Travis Cisco of Morris; Christopher Walusek of Mokena; Mark Parker and Brittney Lutz of Wilmington; and Natalie Gustafson of Channahon.
The production will be stage managed by Warren Dailey of Minooka, with scenic design by JJC staff members Nicki Blowers and Terry Hoffman.
Ticket prices are $8 for general public and $5 for senior citizens and $3 for JJC students with additional discounts available for non-JJC students.

As part of the college's ongoing community service project, audience members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the production where they may be exchanged for items at the concession table. All contributions will be donated to area shelters.

Google Workshops Offered at JJC in October
The Illinois Small Business Development Center at JJC will host two interactive seminars called "Google 101" in October to help small business owners learn how to use Google tools to reach more customers, understand what customers are searching for, and operate more efficiently.
Two three-hour workshops will be held on the JJC Main Campus, one on Oct. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. and one on Oct. 21 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
"The great thing about this workshop is that Google employees will be conducting it," Amy Murphy, JJC director of corporate and community services, said. "These are the people who know all the features Google offers the small business owner. The course should be very informative."
Murphy said that the workshop will also cover the best online marketing practices, including the use of Google AdWords, using the right keywords, and writing compelling ads.
"It will even cover Google Analytics and Google Maps-it is an ideal workshop for small business owners," she added.
The Illinois Small Business Development Center at Joliet Junior College is one of the small business service providers in the Illinois Entrepreneurship Network and is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Seminar on Understanding Healthcare Reform Laws for Small Businesses at JJC Oct. 13
With the recent passage of the federal healthcare reform package, many people are still wondering how the new legislation will affect them.
JJC's Illinois Small Business Development Center (ISBDC) hopes to do their part and help small business owners navigate the new laws with a two-hour seminar "Healthcare Reform and the Small Business" on Oct. 13 from 8 to 10 a.m. on the college's Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. Cost to attend is $15 per person.
"In this seminar we hope to provide facts to the small business owner so they can make better decisions about the future," Brian Thompson, ISBDC business analyst, said. "We will look at what is coming between now and 2013."
The seminar will be conducted by Larry Grudzien, an attorney who specializes in employee benefits law. Grudzien, who has more than 28 years of experience in this field, has been an adjunct faculty member at John Marshall Law School in Chicago and Valparaiso University School of Law in Indiana.
Grudzien will focus on changes within the legislation that take effect in 2010, 2011 and 2012. One of the changes to take effect during this period is the elimination of lifetime and annual limits. In the past, a policy would cover 80 percent of co-pay amount and 100 percent of the balance up to a specified lifetime total.

Faculty, Staff Recognition
- Chefs Mike McGreal and Kyle Richardson were featured in a recent blog by the Share Our Strength organization, a national organization that works to make sure children in the U.S. don't grow up hungry. Both McGreal and Richardson were in Anaheim, Calif. at the Hermosa Village housing community, where they and other chefs from the American Culinary Federation conducted a food and nutrition outreach event for resident families and kids.
