Two Proclamations Adopted at September Board Meeting

The Board of Trustees adopted proclamations at the Sept. 14 meeting designating Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month, and Sept. 13 - 17 as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week.

Digging Under JJC Lake Completes Campus Water Project

This summer, construction on the Main Campus not only included the rise of new buildings, but digging underneath the campus lake to loop the water main system. 

According to Rick Lyman, JJC manager of construction and facility planning, an auguring pit was dug on the side of the lake closest to the T-Building that was approximately 15 feet wide by 45 feet long and about 40 feet deep. The bottom of the pit extended about 6 feet below the bottom of the lake.

"Then, we augured a three-foot diameter hole under the lake that ran about 170 feet to the north side of the lake," he said. "At that point, another pit was excavated to accept the water main on the other side."
 
He added that the channel under the lake is encased with a steel pipe, and has a new eight-inch water main running through it. There are also two four-inch conduits in the event the college decides to run IT or other power cables through it. 
 
Before the project was complete, if a water main break occurred, the college had to shut down water that fed large portions of the campus, or in some cases, the entire system. Now, water service is  connected on both sides of campus.
 
"The looped water main serves our new Facility Service building, but also now allows the ability, for maintenance needs, to shut down water supply around the campus without shutting down multiple areas," Lyman said. 
 
 
 
JJC and GSU to Sign Transfer Agreement Tomorrow, Campus Community Invited 
 
 
JJC and Governors State University will sign a dual degree program agreement Friday, Sept. 17, at 9:30 a.m. on the JJC Main Campus Bridge. The college community is invited to attend.

 
Dr. Proulx and Governors State University President Dr. Elaine P. Maimon will be present to sign the agreement, in addition to Dr. Betsy Oudenhoven and Dr. Valerie Roberson. Representatives from GSU will also include Dr. Gebeyehu Ejigu, executive vice president, and Dr. Terry L. Allison, provost and vice president of academic affairs. 
 
Dr. Angie Kaysen-Luzbetak, JJC coordinator of transfer articulation, said that recent data and literature suggest that associate degree completion prior to transfer increases a student's chance of baccalaureate degree completion.
 
"What is really special about this program is the commitment to ensure that JJC students complete their associate degree prior to transfer to Governors State University," Kaysen-Luzbetak said. "As a result, JJC and GSU have crafted a new agreement that not only supports the students' journey at JJC, but creates a pathway for success and degree completion at GSU."
 
 
 
 
JJC Culinary Team Honored by Will County Board Today

The Will County Board adopted a proclamation to honor the JJC hot foods culinary team at their Sept. 16 meeting. The proclamation recognized the five-student team for their second place finish at the American Culinary Federation's  national competition Aug. 5 in Anaheim, Calif.
 
Trustee Jeff May, Dr. Proulx, Chefs Tim Bucci and Kyle Richardson, and Culinary Arts and Hospitality Department Chair Mike McGreal all attended to accept the proclamation with the team.

2002 JJC Team Inducted into NJCAA Football Hall of Fame
 
The National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) announced in September that the 2002 Joliet Junior College football team will be inducted into its Football Hall of Fame.
 
According to the NJCAA, not only did JJC hold the record for the nation's longest (at the time) winning streak of 21 games, but they also averaged a 26 point margin of victory against opponents, holding them to an average of 10 points per game.
 
In addition, the 2002 team had two record breaking athletes in quarterback Jim Peyton (the Wolves' all-time single season passing leader) and wide receiver Kelvin Hayden (the Wolves' all-time single season leader in receptions), that highlighted a class that produced 18 All-Conference players, 14 All-Region players, and five All-Americans.

Free Alzheimer's at Home Training Program for Caregivers Starts Sept. 24
With a projected 44 percent growth of the caregiver profession, JJC, along with partner organizations, will offer a free Alzheimer's at Home training program starting Sept. 24. 
 
The grant-funded training is a specialized course for in-home workers and family members age 50 or over who care for individuals with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. 
 
According to the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, currently affects 5.3 million Americans, with more than 10 million family members providing some level of care.

 
The program begins Sept. 24 and runs through Nov. 12. Each course is Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the JJC City Center Campus.
 
Paige Vanderhyden, JJC workforce services manager, said there are currently 63 home health care service employers within Will County, most of which seek qualified caregivers to fill vacancies.

Trustee Nominating Petitions Available Starting Sept. 21
 
Nominating petitions for candidacy for the office of Joliet Junior College Trustee will be available beginning Sept. 21. 
 
This year, two seats are up for election, that of current trustees Jeff May and Mike O'Connell. O'Connell was appointed to fill the vacancy when former Trustee Dick Dystrup passed away in August 2009. Each trustee term is six years.
 
Information and nominating petitions for the JJC trustee consolidated election will be available on the JJC Board of Trustees website where additional election materials can be found. 
 
Petitions can also be picked up at the offices of Joan Tierney or Darlene Boyle, JJC local election officials from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

Faculty, Staff Recognition
 
 
·         Congratulations to Jewell Dennis and the Project Achieve staff, who received a five-year, $2 million TRIO grant through the U.S. Department of Education's Student Support Services Program. The grant money will support the college's Project Achieve Office, which provides academic and other support services to low-income, first-generation or disabled college students to increase student retention and graduation rates, facilitate their transfer from two-year to four-year colleges, and foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of low-income and first generation college students and individuals with disabilities.
 
·         Bill Yarrow, professor of English and iCampus faculty coordinator, presented a session entitled "Converting Classroom Classes to Pure Online Classes" at the Blackboard conference (BbWorld 2010) on July 15 with Dr. Christine Stinson, dean of Information and learning management and chief information officer at Ferrum College.
