JJC Professor Hogan Receives National Physics Award
Alexander K. Dickison, past president of AAPT, presents Bill Hogan with his award in Portland, Ore. in July. (Photo courtesy of AAPT) Joliet Junior College Physics Professor William Hogan received the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching Award at the APPT summer meeting in Portland, Ore. July 20. The national award is given by the APPT based on contributions to undergraduate teaching, in addition to successfully helping students of all levels understand and appreciate physics. "I'm honored to be chosen," Hogan said. "I'm not sure I deserve this award but I love teaching introductory physics and feel very fortunate to make my living doing something I enjoy."
Hogan joined the JJC physics faculty in 1997. He has taught introductory physics at all levels including conceptual physics, technical physics, college physics with a trigonometry pre-requisite, and university physics with a calculus prerequisite. He believes strongly in making students active participants in the learning process in all parts of the course.

JJC Partners with Joliet Hospice, Harrah's to Build Hospice Labyrinth Garden
Campus community invited to attend groundbreaking ceremony Aug. 17

The Joliet Area Community Hospice Home (JACH) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a labyrinth and meditation garden on Tuesday, Aug. 17, on the hospice property off of McDonough Street in Joliet. The public is invited to attend. Funded by a $25,000 grant from Harrah's Joliet Casino & Hotel, the labyrinth and surrounding garden design has been developed by Joliet Junior College Professor Greg Pierceall and his horticulture students. The event will be held on the hospice grounds at 250 Water Stone Circle in Joliet, and will begin at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments, followed by a short program at 10 a.m. "Hospice provides a professional, caring service at a most difficult time of life, while allowing for comfort and support for numerous families," Darren VanDover, senior vice president and general manager of Harrah's Joliet Casino & Hotel, said. "Harrah's is honored to be able to contribute to their amenities with the hope that the meditation garden will provide solace and peace to families in crisis."

Fall PPD Week Preview College offices to close so all employees can attend General Session
Fall 2010 Professional and Personal Development (PPD) Week activities kick off on Monday, Aug. 16, and run through Friday, Aug. 20.
The college will close its offices Wednesday, Aug. 18, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. so that all employees will have the chance to attend the continental breakfast and General Session.
If there is a session that you would like to present/facilitate, please use the following link to set it up: www.jjc.edu/info/ppd-planning.
It is suggested that you compare the sessions listed in the first link to those sessions listed on the week at a glance schedule for available times. The PPD committee recommends avoiding scheduling sessions on Wednesday, Aug. 18, because it is usually a full day of activities.
Also, remember to reserve a room for your session prior to completing the information for set up. This is a required field for completion of the planning form.
For more information, contact Todd Byrd at ext. 2427, Angela McNulty at ext. 2813, or Sunnie Hunter at ext. 6629.

Faculty/Staff Parking Tag Information, Parking Changes
This memo will cover some of the usual information regarding parking and faculty/staff tags, as well as some information regarding the recent traffic pattern and parking changes.
This year, the hanging tags will be red with yellow trim. Within the next week, we will be forwarding tag application cards out to all of you in your college mailboxes. Please have them completely filled out when you come to pick up your tag to save time and shorten the lines.
As usual, we will be setting up our parking tag tables during P&PD week, as follows:
(Note: Tags will not be issued at the Police Department - G-1013- until Thursday, Aug. 20)
Main Campus, Wednesday, Aug. 18:
7:30 to 10 a.m., Cafeteria
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Theatre Lobby
4:30 to 6 p.m. Adjunct Dinner, Cafeteria
City Center Campus, Thursday, Aug. 19:
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Front Lobby CSO Desk
Debbie Halley will have parking tags and applications available for those who were not able to get their tags here at Main.
Morris, Frankfort & Weitendorf: Faculty/staff from these campuses who were not able to get their tags during the above scheduled times can get their tags at the Campus Police window in G-1013, beginning Thursday Aug. 19. Faculty/Staff Parking:
Faculty/staff parking in North Lot 1 (J-Building lot) has been reduced due to the construction of the new Facility Services building. However, the lost spaces have been replaced in North Lot 2 with individually marked spaces. The gravel area at the rear of the lot is still available for general parking for both staff and students.
Faculty/Staff parking in South Lot 2 (Football Field Lot) remains the same, though we have had to temporarily relocate some handicapped parking there, due to the ongoing construction.
