Beginning Friday, May 21, the college will close Friday - Sunday during the summer.
This was a recommendation made by the Sustainability Committee and its Business Practices Green Team.
The college will pilot the program this summer to review the amount of cost savings predominately in the areas of energy (gas, water, sewer and electric). Some campuses and centers will be open during this time for various events and services.
A memo was emailed to employees earlier this week. It explains summer hours for 2010, including the options for scheduling the four-day work week for full-time regular employees.
For more information, contact Human Resources at ext. 2266 or email hr@jjc.edu.

Looking up the Arno River toward Florence and the medieval bridge, the Ponte Vecchio. (Photo by Steve Sherrell)
This first-person account is part of an occasional series in which faculty and staff share their experiences with the Joliet Junior College community.
By Steve Sherrell, professor of art
Last year, I applied for and was granted a sabbatical from teaching. I decided that I needed to go to Florence, Italy. I am a professor of art and have been teaching at JJC for twenty years. A sabbatical is not a vacation but an opportunity to spend time working on or studying something that applies to your area of expertise. Since I am an artist, there is always something that I'm working on or working toward. This may be a series of artwork or an exhibition or a problem that I'm trying to solve artistically. On the simplest level, the sabbatical represents free time. This is a great luxury because there's always something pressing. But that's not why I took the sabbatical. I began traveling in Europe many years ago, but generally my travel was confined to 10 to 15 day stays in a variety of countries. I've been to Florence, Italy many times but only for short stays. JJC Annual Spring Scholarship Gala April 30
The public is invited to attend the Joliet Junior College Annual Spring Scholarship Gala, Friday, April 30, on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. The event will help raise funds for scholarships awarded to culinary arts and hospitality management students. Last year, the event raised $17,000 for student scholarships. "The annual spring gala provides the opportunity of all the culinary arts and hospitality students to prepare, cook and serve a fine dining meal at a gala event that rivals any held in downtown Chicago," said Chef Michael McGreal, JJC professor and Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management chair. "The scholarships that are earned through the support of our guests help to provide not only an education, but also a lifelong rewarding career to many of our district's residents." From 6:30 to 10 p.m., guests will enjoy an evening of fine dining, desserts and wine. The event begins on the JJC Bridge with hors d'oeuvres and will continue in the cafeteria with a five-course dinner. Read more about the gala and menu

JJC Floral Students Win Top Honors at Michigan Conference
Students from the college's floral design program won top honors at the Michigan Floral Association Spring Conference in March. JJC student Kathrynn Wahl (right), of New Lenox, was the first place winner in a design contest titled "80 Daisies Around the World," where students were asked to create a design that represented the country of their choice using a $50 budget. Wahl's design depicted the northern lights of Iceland. Jennifer Vaslie, also of New Lenox, took third place with a design depicting Holland. Fourth place winner, Diane Chamberlain, of Joliet, created a design depicting the rain forest in Costa Rica. "The girls did a wonderful job creating designs that represented their chosen countries," Donna Theimer, JJC floral design professor, said. "It was a very proud teacher moment!"
In addition, JJC student Betsy Cangiano of Oswego competed in the professional category. Theimer said that Cangiano has had some experience working in a shop and therefore competed in a higher-skilled category. Of Cangiano's designs-a bridal bouquet for a beach wedding, a sympathy wreath for someone who loved the sea and a creative table design with beach elements-her sympathy wreath took second place in the competition. "She is only 19 years old and was as poised as any adult I have ever seen under such pressure," Theimer said. "She did an outstanding job creating her design. All of the girls did a wonderful job representing JJC's floral design program."
