McGreal, Richardson Chosen to Participate in White House Healthy Eating Initiative

McGreal-Richardson White HouseTwo Joliet Junior College culinary instructors were chosen to participate in a June 4 event launch at the White House for the Chefs Move to Schools initiative, which will pair chefs with schools in their communities to help educate kids about food and nutrition.

The new initiative, led by First Lady Michelle Obama and White House Chef Sam Kass, invited selected chefs from across the country to the launch, held on the South Lawn of the White House.

JJC Chefs Michael McGreal and Kyle Richardson were two of five chefs from Illinois chosen to attend and represent the American Culinary Federation.

"The obesity epidemic that is facing our nation has led to an explosion of related health issues," McGreal said. "Mrs. Obama and White House Chef Sam Kass have put forth a challenge for chefs across America to come together to solve this health dilemma and I am honored to be a part of it."

Eighteen Joliet Junior College students were recognized at the annual Honors Program Graduation Celebration May 13 at JJC's historic Renaissance Center.

For 23 years, the college's Honors Program has supported students in all majors that want to achieve academic success through challenging, stimulating coursework and extracurricular activities.

Stacey Murphy, JJC English professor and Honors Program director, said that the essence of honors education is personal attention, top faculty, enlightening seminars, illuminating study-travel experiences, numerous research opportunities, and career-building internships.

"This is all designed to enhance a classic education and prepare students for a lifetime of achievement," she said. "And there's a bonus: many honors programs and colleges have their own scholarships that help pay for a student's undergraduate education."

This year, the program celebrated a record number of graduates. Of that group, nine students completed the rigorous requirements to graduate with full institutional honors, a distinction of both grade point average and course work.

They are: Julieta Campos of New Lenox; Azucena Cervantes of Joliet; Allie Mahalik of Wilmington; Melissa Pasierb of Mokena; James Pommier of Plainfield; Stephen Tompkins of New Lenox; Kari Ulivi of Coal City; Patricia Reed of Homer Glen; and Nadia Maragha of Plainfield.

"I enrolled in the Honors Program during my first year, knowing that I would be challenged and helped to reach my full potential as a scholar," graduate James Pommier said. "I benefitted not only from the intensiveness of the classes, but also from the smaller sizes, making them more open for participation, interaction, and group discussion."

Andy Neill, natural sciences professor, and Virginia Piekarski, biology lab supervisor, led a walking tour of the college's lake rehabilitation and watershed management projects for The Conservation Foundation May 13. They spoke to around 20 members of the foundation about the various ways the college is committed to improving land and water quality on campus. Neill said the college's restoration projects serve as showcases in sustainable watershed management for the community.

The Conservation Foundation is based in Naperville.
