Natural Areas Restoration Project Serves as Outdoor Learning Lab for Students
(Submitted photo)
Students in Andy Neill's Plants and Society class are seen here in April conducting field research in a recently cleared section of the Main Campus. Neill has been using the area, recently cleared by controlled burns for the college's Natural Areas Restoration Project, as an outdoor teaching and learning laboratory.
He said that students are collecting vegetation data by identifying and tallying plants located within a sampling hoop to measure the effectiveness restoration efforts are having on the natural areas. "Over time, we expect to see the establishment of a diverse native plant community that will in turn support other wildlife, stabilize soils and improve water quality in the campus lake," Neill said. New JJC Connect Program Pilots this Summer
In a continued effort to provide meaningful opportunities that support the successful transition of new students at JJC, the college will be piloting a new program this summer entitled, JJC Connect. Based on best practices for transitioning new students, the goal of the JJC Connect program is to further engage registered first-time students (and their families) in a campus experience that will... · Provide supplementary support to new students · help them develop an affinity to the college · increase their knowledge about specific programs, services, and college resources · increase student expectations for success and the avoidance of behaviors that may lead to failure · increase contact with staff and faculty from specific departments
The three hour program opportunity will be offered four times this summer. Sessions provided will be interactive, with concurrent opportunities to explore a variety of important topics. If you'd like to learn more or have questions, visit www.jjc.edu/info/connect or call 815-280-2887.
