JJC Cinco de Mayo Celebration to Honor Local Physician May
Dr. L. Claude Aschinberg | JJC's Cinco de Mayo celebration will honor Dr. L. Claude Aschinberg, founder of the pediatric unit at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, on Tuesday, May 4, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on the Main Campus Bridge. This event is free and open the public. According to Salvador Valadez, JJC Latino student support specialist and event organizer, Aschinberg is much loved and respected by the local Latino community. Born in Belgium to a poor Jewish family, his father's entire family was victims of Nazi concentration camps. After the war, Aschinberg's family immigrated to Argentina where Dr. Aschinberg earned his medical degree. Eventually, he and his wife made their way to Joliet where he has practiced medicine since 1975. "We will honor Dr. Aschinberg for his work and dedication to his community," Valadez said. "And, although he is an 'adopted' Latino by marriage, we nonetheless consider him one of our own." Aschinberg completed his pediatric residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago and a post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric nephrology at Albert-Einstein University in New York. Board certified in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology, Aschinberg is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and was an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Illinois. He is the author of several publications in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology, and has been the chairman of the department of Pediatrics at Saint Joseph Medical Center and Silver Cross Hospital. Entertainment will be provided by the JJC student club Latinos Unidos. For more information, contact Sal Valadez at svaladez@jjc.edu or ext. 2829.
