Natural Sciences Renderings Presented at March Board Meeting

Floor plans and renderings of the Natural Sciences addition and renovation were presented by Legat Architects at the March 9 board meeting.

In accordance with the master plan, the two-story 37,000 square-foot addition will house mostly labs, while a 23,000 square-foot renovation expands some existing labs, and converts others to classrooms and offices. Construction is scheduled to start in December 2010 and be completed in March 2012.

According to Legat, infrastructure renovation will include new ductwork, lighting, and plumbing upgrades. Renovated labs and classrooms will include new flooring, ceilings, casework, and equipment. A renovated corridor on the first floor will connect the addition to the expanded prep area in the existing E-Building.

Building highlights:
·         21 total labs (14 new/5 renovated/2 existing to remain)
·         Prep areas completely renovated and expanded
·         10 total classrooms (6 renovated/4 existing)
·         LEED Silver certification

Sustainable highlights:
·         Energy recovery wheel to capture and redistribute heat
·         Rainwater harvesting system will direct water from the roof and site to a 7,000-gallon tank, then pump it into the building for toilet flushing
·         High-efficiency building envelope
·         Passive solar shading
·         Areas of permeable pavement in courtyard reduce storm water runoff

J-Building Parking Changes Starting Next Week

The college will reconfigure its north parking lots starting next week to accommodate construction of the Facility Services Building.

This will affect both staff and student parking in those areas because the new building's location is directly in front of J-Building.

Affected parking spaces in the J-Building faculty/staff lot (North Lot 1) will be relocated along the easternmost rows of the J-Building student parking lot (North Lot 2) and designated as faculty/staff parking Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Signage has been placed in these areas to indicate the change.

These spaces will be open to students and the public after 6 p.m. and on the weekends.

Joliet Job Fair at JJC April 15

Last year, Karina Villafuerte wanted a job.

After a trip to a job fair at Joliet Junior College, she got one.

The college will host this year's annual Joliet Regional Job Fair on April 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the college's City Center Campus, 214 N. Ottawa Street in Joliet.

"Attending the job fair was one of the greatest things that happened to me in the past year," Villafuerte said. "It not only helped me motivate myself to look for better things now and for the future, but it has given me the opportunity of having one of the greatest jobs."

Villafuerte, of Joliet, now works for Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana as a membership specialist while she's taking classes at JJC.

The job fair is free and open to the public. Participating employers will offer a variety of opportunities at all skill levels, said fair organizer and JJC Career Services Director Mary Jo Wolfersberger. She also noted that resumes are required for admittance to the job fair.

Those who plan to attend should:

·         Bring 20 to 30 copies of their resume. A resume is required to be admitted to the Joliet Regional Job Fair
·         Wear appropriate interview attire
·         Review the web sites of the employers to learn more about the companies
·         Only job seekers with resumes will be admitted
·         Register online to attend

Registration information and more details are available at

U of I Professor to Give Free Public Astronomy Talk at JJC April 5

University of Illinois Astronomy Professor Leslie Looney will give a free public talk on protostars April 5 from 4 to 5 p.m. on the Main Campus in Joliet.

Looney's talk, titled "The Cradle of Planets: Understanding the Youngest Protostars," will be held in lecture room D-2002.

Looney studies the circumstellar disk surrounding young protostars. These disks are thought to be the natal environment of planets. The youngest protostars hold the secrets to the initial conditions of star and planet formation.

These objects, still at least a million years from becoming a star, are among the most intriguing objects in space. As protostars are deeply embedded in the material from which they form, Looney uses some of the world's most sensitive telescopes ranging from infrared to millimeter wavelengths, including Illinois's partnership in the millimeter telescope array CARMA, to study them.

He will present some of the results of these new observations, limitations, and new hope on the horizon. Refreshments will be provided before the talk at 3:45 p.m. Admission is free.
