Health Professions Rendering Presented at March 9 Board Meeting
HealthProfessionsRendering
Renderings of the new Health Professions Building were presented by Legat Architects at the March 9 board meeting. The building, scheduled for completion in winter 2013, will be constructed to the north of the T-Building, which is visible in the left-hand side of this image.

Floor plans and renderings of the Health Professions Building were presented by Legat Architects at March 9 board meeting.

In accordance with the master plan, the three-story, 124,000 square-foot structure will be constructed to the north of the T-Building and will seek to attain LEED Silver Certification.

The primary goals in planning the building, Legat said, were to develop a center with flexible learning environments for faculty and students, design labs for students that reflect a real world work environment, and add additional instructional space as well as space for proposed programs like massage therapy and dental hygiene.

In addition to replicating elements of white stucco and stone façade from the exterior of the adjacent T-Building, the Health Professions Building will physically connect to the T-Building through a glass concourse in the rear of the structure.

Roberson Appointed to VP Academic Affairs Post

The Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Dr. Valerie Roberson as the new vice president of academic affairs at the March 9 meeting.

Roberson's appointment is effective June 1. She is the former campus president of Olive-Harvey College, one of the six community colleges within the city colleges of Chicago.

Prior to serving as a campus president, Roberson served as associate vice chancellor for adult education for the district office of the City Colleges.

In 24 years of administrative work, Roberson has held a number of positions within community colleges, including vice president for institutional advancement, dean of academic support, and director of adult education programs at Heartland Community College; director of adult education at Triton College; and manager of student support services and career adviser at Chicago City-Wide College.

Roberson received her doctorate in higher education administration from Illinois State University in 2002. She holds a master's degree in adult education: employee training and development from Roosevelt University and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Bradley University.

Natural Areas Restoration Controlled Burns Scheduled to End this Week

The natural areas restoration project continues to move ahead, with the controlled burns on the Main Campus scheduled to end this week.

Since mid-January, the contractor has worked to clear around 65 acres involved in the project and is currently working in the area north of the T-Building.

Area wildlife should not be adversely affected in any way by the projects, according to project officials, though the deer may feel less secure that their close cover has been thinned out.

In addition, construction of the planned bioswale and wetland area north of the JJC Lake has been completed. The area is now armored with three-inch stone and laced with boulders to break up water velocity from draining into the lake from J-Building parking lots.

A concrete vortex separator, along with the bioswale, will assist in filtering contaminated run-off before it drains into the lake.
