Men's Basketball Advances to National Tournament

The JJC men's basketball team defeated Milwaukee Area Technical College 84-70 to claim the Region IV Division III Championship on Feb. 27. The victory takes the team to the NJCAA Division III national tournament which begins March 11 in New York.

The Wolves (27-5 overall) will meet Herkimer County Community College from New York (31-2 overall) on Thursday, March 11, for an 8 p.m. (Eastern time) match up.

Sophomore Brian Bradley led the charge in the Region IV Division III Championship game with 25 points and 8 rebounds followed by Jon Bartlett with 22 points. Andy Supergan chipped in with 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Bradley and Supergan were named to the Region IV all-tournament team. Jon Bartlett was named MVP of the tournament, as Head Coach Joe Kuhn was named 2010 Region IV Coach of the Year.

"Our team obviously has had a great season," Kuhn said. "We know that going into the national tournament we have three games to play. Anything can happen."

This is Kuhn's fifth team to earn a trip to the national tournament.

Battle of the Bands and Jail and Bail Raise over $3200

The JJC Student Government raised over $3,200 for the Wish Upon a Star Foundation through the recent Battle of the Staff Bands and Jail and Bail events, exceeding the group's original goal of $2,500.

Top fundraisers in the Jail and Bail event were Brenda Zeborowski, fitness center coordinator, who was "arrested" and posted a $377.85 bond (set at $100); Gil Nicoll, math and science tutor, who was arrested and turned in $202 (bond set at $100); and Kelly Rogers, human resources assistant to the director, who turned in $184.50 (bond was set at $100).

"These top fundraisers helped us go above and beyond our goal," Pam Dilday, office of student activities director, said. "There is no way Student Government could have raised the money we did without everyone from JJC helping us."

The Battle of the Staff Bands wrapped up fundraising efforts on Feb. 26. Three bands competed for bragging rights, while one surprise band--Big Man, featuring JJC faculty members in the English and World Languages Department Adam Heidenreich and Mike Hainzinger--started off the evening.

ColemanGrossi, featuring JJC automotive services professor Jim Coleman; Together Again, featuring JJC psychology professor Dr. Marti Bonne; and The Vinyl Frontier, featuring JJC electronic media production staffer Geoff Rusch all performed, looking to earn the highest GPA from a panel of student judges.

The
highest GPA went to ColemanGrossi, while the popular vote went to The Vinyl Frontier based on money deposited into the jars for each band.

Steel Girders Continue to Rise at Campus Center Site

Campus Center construction photos

The skeleton of the new Campus Center continues to grow this week as more steel girders are put into place at the Campus Center construction site.

From the site of the old greenhouses between the A- and C-Buildings, erected steel is now forming the front of the building, which, when finished, will be considered the new front door of the Main Campus.

The rear of the building is also beginning to take shape. A curved area, this section will serve as the back wall of the cafeteria. It can be seen from the temporary outdoor walkway connecting the A- and C-Buildings. In the front and the back, the footings for the building are being poured.

The Campus Center is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2011.

Natural Areas Restoration and Lake Project Updates

NaturalAreasMarch-10

The natural areas restoration project continues to move ahead. Since mid-January, the contractor has cleared around 50 of the 65 to 75 acres involved in the project and is currently working in the drainage area north of the ring road leading to J-Building and in the farm field north of East Lot 1.
Area wildlife should not be adversely affected in any way by the projects, according to project officials, though the deer may feel less secure that their close cover has been thinned out.

In addition, construction of the planned bioswale and wetland area north of the JJC Lake-a component of the lake dredging project-has been completed. The area is now armored with three-inch stone and laced with boulders to break up water velocity from draining into the lake from J-Building parking lots.

A concrete vortex separator, along with the bioswale, will assist in filtering contaminated run-off before it drains into the lake.

NIU, JJC Collaborate on College Reading Preparedness Project

JJC is collaborating with Northern Illinois University researchers on a project regarding college-level reading preparedness.

According to Joanne Kantner, JJC director of developmental education, a series of national reports reveal that a sizeable gap exists between the standards students are required to meet to earn a high school diploma and the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in their college and career pursuits after high school.

"Many students enter college unprepared for the reading demands of entry-level college classes," Kantner said. "Students are learning, after the fact, that college eligibility is not the same as college readiness."

The project is funded by an Award of Excellence Grant from the Joliet Junior College Foundation. It brings together Dr. Norm Stahl, NIU literacy department chair, Dr. Sonya Armstrong, NIU assistant professor of postsecondary literacy, and JJC faculty and staff to conduct an audit of the reading requirements students encounter in each academic department.

Kantner said information will be gathered and analyzed about textbook complexity, quantity of reading, and text sources using faculty surveys, placement test data, course materials, and focus groups. The audit will be complete in May 2010 and guidelines established for the next academic year.

Results of the project will provide district high schools and JJC with a comprehensive picture of what is college-level reading at JJC.

Public Show on Star Clusters at the Planetarium March 11

The JJC Trackman Planetarium will host a public show, "Star Clusters: Jewels in the Sky," Thursday, March 11, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the Main Campus.

Presented by JJC professor Dr. Noella D'Cruz, the program will include images of star clusters that show collections of stars of different colors and brightness, and explain how astronomers use the color and brightness of individual stars in a cluster to understand how stars evolve, how old they are, and how to predict the future of the Sun.

The star projector will be used to look at colors of stars and to indicate where some of the more prominent star clusters are located in the sky.

Admission to the show is free. Planetarium shows begin promptly-once the show has started latecomers will not be admitted.

For more information, contact Noella D'Cruz at ext. 2572 or e-mail ndcruz@jjc.edu.
