Message from Dr. Proulx
Second quarter payment from the state has been received
As I mentioned at the beginning of this semester, I will be keeping you apprised of details regarding the state's fiscal situation and what impact it has on budget planning and cash flow operations at the college.
We received some good news at the end of last week in the form of our second quarter payment from the state. In addition, we received a significant portion of our adult education funding. Although this is good news, there is still much uncertainty when it comes to how the state will handle its financial issues.
I will keep you informed as I learn more; in the meantime, do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions at gproulx@jjc.edu or ext. 2207.

Surviving Tuskegee Airmen to Visit JJC Feb. 5 for Public Event

(Photo from Wikipedia)
Joliet Junior College will host an event featuring two World War II veterans and former Tuskegee Airmen on Feb. 5.
Organized in honor of Black History Month, "The Tuskegee Airmen: Honoring WWII African-American Fighter Pilots," will be held on Friday, Feb. 5, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.
Dr. Wilton Tyler and Colonel Julius Jackson, both from the Chicago area, will share their personal stories as the college celebrates the contributions of African-Americans in the armed forces during WWII.
According to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, most black soldiers during World War II were restricted to labor battalions and other support positions due to laws at the time, but an experiment within the USAAF showed that given equal opportunity and training, African-Americans could fly in, command and support combat units as well as anyone. The USAAF's black fliers, the Tuskegee Airmen, served with distinction in combat and directly contributed to the eventual integration of the U.S. armed services.
Seating for the event is limited. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by calling (815) 280-2829.

Sensory Jewelry, Clothing Exhibit on Display through Feb. 11
A mixed media exhibit showcasing sensory jewelry and clothing is now on display in the Laura A. Sprague Gallery on the Main Campus through Feb. 11.
Sensation Exhibition, by artist Kate Callan, showcases sensory jewelry and clothing inspired by what the artist describes as her own childlike curiosity. The collection, which ranges from dresses and blankets to mixed media and jewelry, allows the viewer the opportunity to appreciate the familiar in an unfamiliar way by combining traditional techniques and Braille.
Callan graduated with a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2007. Currently, she is a jewelry and gemstone appraiser for Diamond and Nexus Labs in Wisconsin.
The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information contact the Fine Arts Department at (815) 280-2223 or rmonroe@jjc.edu.
