For Joliet Junior College students, transferring to Bradley University in Peoria will be easier beginning in fall 2010 thanks to a new competitive scholarship.
Twenty JJC students will be eligible to receive $3,500 in financial aid each academic year through the Presidents Partnership Scholarship. When combined with other Bradley-funded awards, the new scholarship will provide up to $8,500 per year for qualified JJC students.
Bradley University President Joanne Glasser and JJC President Dr. Gena Proulx met to formally sign the partnership papers on the JJC Main Campus on Dec. 14.
"The future growth and development of our state, we believe, requires a well-prepared and well-educated workforce, ready for the demands of the constantly changing workplace," Glasser said at the signing event. "Our institutions have an opportunity-and quite frankly, a responsibility-to work together to address the educational and economic challenges of our communities, our region and our state."

Joliet Junior College football player Brandon Williams has signed a letter of intent to continue his playing career with the University of Oregon.
"I've wanted to play college football since I was little--being able to continue doing that with Oregon is a dream come true," Williams said.
Williams, a 6'4", 240 lb. tight end, led the Wolves with 908 yards on 56 receptions. He scored seven touchdowns this season, while averaging 16.1 yards per catch. His career high at Joliet Junior College was on Sept. 19 against Ellsworth Community College. Brandon totaled 254 yards on nine receptions, as well as scoring three touchdowns. His performance for that game earned him NJCAA offensive player of the week.
"Brandon Williams is the type of junior college player that everyone wants," Head Football Coach Jeremy Richardson said. "He works hard and truly dedicates himself to what he wants to accomplish whether it be on the field or in the classroom."
Williams has been named to the NJCAA All-American 1st team, Midwest Football Conference (MFC) All League 1st team, Midwest Football Conference East Division 1st team, and to the Region IV All Region 1st team for the 2009 season.
"Brandon had a subpar freshman season," Richardson said. "He put in countless hours in the weight room during the offseason and showed that hard work really does pay off."
Williams, of Chicago, is the first ever JJC football player to go on to play in the PAC 10 conference.

Safe Zone Training Offered During PPD Week

In the past year, the
Diversity Advisory Council has developed the college-wide initiative Safe Zone, which works to reduce homophobia and heterosexism on campus.
The Safe Zone program includes training for JJC employees to serve as a resource referral, or an ally, for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) students. These allies identify that their space is a safe place to talk about issues that impact GLBTQ students by posting the Safe Zone logo in their office or workspace.
So far, 50 JJC employees have been trained through the Safe Zone program.
According to Pam Dilday, OSA director, those who complete Safe Zone training learn about the issues GLBTQ students face and about the different community resources available.
Two Safe Zone Ally trainings are scheduled during
Professional and Personal Development Week in January:
Tuesday, Jan. 5
1 to 3 p.m.
J-2012
Friday, Jan. 8
10 a.m. to noon
J-2012
Those interested in becoming Safe Zone allies should RSVP for one of the sessions to Pam Dilday at ext. 2755 or pdilday@jjc.edu.

Giving Campaign to United Way and Combined Charities Underway
The college's giving campaign to help support the United Way of Will County and the Combined Charities campaigns is currently underway. JJC employees have the option to support one or both campaigns through various contribution methods, including payroll deduction or direct contribution via check or credit card. Spearheading this year's giving campaign are Elaine Falk, federal grant accountant, Angie Kaysen, transfer and articulation coordinator, and Catherine Suchy, librarian. "In these difficult economic times, giving matters even more," Falk said. "Any donation is greatly appreciated and will be used to improve the lives of those in need." Falk, Kaysen and Suchy are working with the Office of Human Resources and a volunteer committee consisting of Cathy Whalen, representing the food services union, Michele Coleman representing the clerical union, and Michael Riola representing the facility services union. Informational packets are being sent out this week through interoffice mail. Those who haven't received one by the end of the week can contact Falk at efalk@jjc.edu or ext. 2240. All employees are asked to complete and return the pledge form in the informational packet by Dec. 21, whether they choose to participate or not. For questions regarding the 2010 campaign, contact any of the committee members listed above or your union representative.
