Two Staff Members Receive JJC Police Citizen's Award
Police Chief Pete Comanda presented the JJC Police Department Citizen's Award to Joe Offermann, director of institutional research and effectiveness, and Amy Sims, coordinator of student services and holistic wellness, at the Nov. 10 board meeting. The award is given to faculty, staff, students, or members of the community who performed an act of outstanding service or bravery to the JJC community, in a police-related incident or event, or who volunteered their services in a significant manner to make JJC a safer place. On Sept. 23, Offermann and Sims came to the aid of student Norma Jean Tauchen in the college's parking lot. While Offermann went to call for help, Sims remained with Ms. Tauchen and comforted her until assistance arrived. Unfortunately, Tauchen had suffered a fatal heart attack and passed away that night. "Even though Norma succumbed to a heart attack, a simple act of kindness by Joe started a chain of events that gave Norma the best chance for survival, and in her final moments, allowed her to have two caring people by her side," Comanda told board members. "Joe and Amy's actions exemplify what community is all about and they are to be commended. Their actions should remind us all, that we never know how far reaching the affects of a simple act of kindness will be."

New Workplace Skill Assessment and Training at JJC
JJC is now one of more than 300 WorkKeys Solution Providers nationwide. WorkKeys is an ACT-developed system that has helped thousands of companies, organizations, and individuals identify and learn the skills needed to fill specific jobs. WorkKeys assessments measure these abilities in four key areas: communication, problem solving, interpersonal skills, and personal skills. Certificates include: The National Career Readiness Certificate which verifies to employers anywhere in the United States that an individual has essential core employability skills in Reading, Math, and Locating Information.
The Paraprofessional Certificate meets the federally mandated requirements in the No Child Left Behind Act for Teacher Assistants.
According to the Will County Regional Office of Education, the office issued 61 state level and 1,015 Paraprofessional approvals last year. "We are pleased to offer these assessments to the community," Kelly Lapetino, JJC workforce manager. "These certifications will enhance employment opportunities for district residents and for employers to find qualified applicants." Assessments are offered through Workforce Development at both the City Center and Grundy County Center campuses. For more information, call the City Center Campus at (815) 280-1500 or Grundy County Center at (815) 942-0566.

Student Behavioral Procedures from Student Development
By Dr. Betsy Oudenhoven, vice president of student development

As we approach the end of the semester we often see an increase in student behavioral concerns. Stress can escalate already existing conditions and lead to inappropriate or alarming behavior.
Here are some suggestions that may assist you in responding to situations now and in the future:
* If you have an immediate safety concern for a student, yourself or others, please contact Campus Police directly at ext. 2234.
* If a student's behavior has violated the Student Code of Conduct please refer the student to the Dean of Student's office, D-1010, ext.2309.
* If you find a student to be emotionally distressed please refer the student to the Counseling Center, J-1037, ext. 2673.
* If you find the student's behavior to be distressing (but not an immediate threat) please contact Betsy Oudenhoven or Cyndi Vasquez-Barrios for attention by the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT).
* Don't ever hesitate to contact Campus Police, the Vice President of Student Development's Office, the Dean of Students Office, or the Counseling Center for assistance or consultation. FERPA does allow us to share information with each other regarding student concerns (on a need-to-know basis) and also allows us to share information with parents if there is a health or safety concern. If you are ever unsure what you can share in a particular situation involving student behavior, please don't hesitate to contact Cyndi Vasquez-Barrios, dean of students.
* In addition, observed behavior is not considered a student record so if you witness behavior that you find alarming, please do not hesitate to share your concerns.
* Finally, if the behavior you are observing does not present an immediate safety issue, please talk directly with the student about your concerns. The student may not be aware that their behavior is unacceptable to you or to their classmates. You get to set the standard for civil behavior in your classroom and expect that students will adhere to those standards. Sometime students are referred to other offices and they are not sure why.
For additional information on identifying and responding to students in distress, how to respond to students with students with possible behavioral concerns, or for intake forms; contact the Dean of Students Office at ext. 2761. I hope you all have a positive conclusion to your semester. Thanks for your concern for our students and your assistance in keeping our campus a safe place for learning.
