JJC Students Head to the Capitol to Rally for MAP Grants

Map Rally

JJC students joined thousands of other students at a rally for the Monetary Assistance Program (MAP) grants in Springfield on Thursday, Oct. 15. Led by Student Trustee Darren Newenhouse, the students attended the rally and then met with key legislators representing the JJC district to ask for their support in funding the MAP grants.

Approximately $200 million is required to fund the grants for the spring 2010 semester. The MAP grants were originally budgeted at $400 million before being cut in half during the budget process by the governor. The governor and legislators have agreed to support the funding of the remainder of MAP but still have yet to identify a source to pay for the grants.

Nicole Spencer, Ryan Gue, Noel Salazar, Marla Harris, Allyson Poljack, and Newenhouse discussed the MAP grant issue with Sen. A.J. Wilhelmi, Rep. Jack McGuire, and Rep. Renee Kosel. Nearly 2,000 JJC students received MAP grant funding in the fall semester.

"It was a good experience," Newenhouse said. "It was fun, informative and worthwhile. I felt really honored to be a part of the rally, and I was excited to have other students from JJC involved in the process."

JJC Alumni Spotlight: Juan Ortiz

Juan Ortiz
Shouting orders and reading tickets, Chef Juan Ortiz finds himself in the middle of a dinner rush cooking plate after plate of his favorite dish, braised osso buco, an Italian dish of braised veal shanks, topped with a cabernet wild mushroom cream sauce.

Now the executive chef at the Royal Hawk Country Club in St. Charles, Ill., Ortiz began his career almost four years ago while a student at JJC.

Growing up, two of Ortiz's uncles each owned restaurants--one dedicated to Mexican cuisine and the other South American cuisine. Ortiz has worked in the restaurant industry since the age of 18, starting as a dishwasher and making his way to lead line cook.

However, he knew it would take more than just his love for food if he wanted to make a name for himself in the culinary industry. So at the age of 36, he decided the best complement to his fondness of food would be a degree, which he later received from JJC in 2006.
