JJC Hosts 1st Girls Tech Camp
Margaret Semmer, dean of career and technical education, hands a certificate to a young camp goer at the closing ceremony July 23 on the Bridge. (Photo by Mike O'Brien)
The college recently held an outreach event to encourage young women to learn more about non-traditional occupational areas in certain science, math and technology fields. The first Girls Exploring Technology (GET) Summer Camp, held last week, was a free event geared to girls entering 6th through 9th grade. According to Margaret Semmer, dean of career and technical education and organizer of the camp, JJC is uniquely positioned to offer this camp because the college has many non-traditional faculty members in these areas, including female faculty members in the college's architecture, constructions trades and engineering, criminal justice and energy/electricity programs.
Semmer is part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant entitled the "The Collaborative for Gender Equity." As part of the grant, she travels to community colleges around the country to provide professional development opportunities for educators interested in building mentoring programs that address issues of gender equity.
