Remembering Trustee Dick Dystrup
Joliet Junior College trustee, longtime local educator and community advocate Dick Dystrup passed away on Friday, Aug. 28, from complications of pulmonary fibrosis at the University of Chicago Hospital. He was 66 years old. "Trustee Dystrup was a JJC advocate and fan," JJC President Dr. Gena Proulx said. "He loved the Wolves and was known to be present at many college athletic events. We will miss Trustee Dystrup's spirited support of the college and its work and his passion and enthusiasm for JJC's students, faculty and staff." A college trustee since 1999, Dystrup was elected to his second term in 2005. He served as the board secretary on two occasions and served as the board chair in 2002-2003.
He served as vice chair of the board during the 2008-2009 academic year. In 2008, he was appointed as a member of the Association of Community College Trustees' (ACCT) public policy committee. Dystrup's duties as a college trustee were varied throughout his 10 years of service. He served as board representative to the JJC Foundation, the Buildings and Grounds Committee, Communications Committee, and Finance Committee. He also aided in the presidential screening process in 2006 during which time the college hired Dr. Proulx. In addition to his local duties, Dystrup served as the JJC board representative to the Illinois Community College Trustee Association (ICCTA) for the 2001-2002 academic year. Durbin's Office to Honor WWII Vet in Military Medals Ceremony Sept. 9
Lockport native and U.S. Army Air Force Staff Sergeant Joe Belman will be honored by representatives from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin's office in a military medals award ceremony at the JJC Main Campus on Sept. 9. Belman, an 85-year-old World War II veteran, never received certain medals he earned during 35 combat missions as a ball turret gunner for the 8th Air Force - 305th Bomb Group.
Belman's story was also recently recorded by the JJC Media Services Office as part of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. A segment of this video will be shown at the ceremony. The ceremony, which is open to the public, begins in the Fine Arts Theatre at 9:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the JJC Office of the President and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. Free Faculty Music Recital Sept. 13 at Main Campus The Fine Arts Department will present a free faculty recital and lecture by Jim Martincic on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 3 p.m. in the theatre on the Main Campus. Dr. Martincic will perform and discuss the music of Sampson, Cheetham, and other 20th century composers in a program called "No Accompaniment Required," which will be the first part in a series of unaccompanied trumpet programs through the year. Martincic is a recording artist for Lion's Den Studios and has shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Doc Severinsen, Harry Connick Jr., and Jon Faddis. Also an active member in the Chicago music scene, Martincic has performed with ensembles including Rob Parton's Jazz Tech Big Band, Swing Shift, Illinois Brass Band, and Phil Feo's Royal Trumpet Works. He earned his doctorate degree in trumpet performance from the University of Missouri - Kansas City Conservatory of Music in 2003. Restroom Renovation Schedule Changes
The restroom renovation schedule has changed. This project, which began Aug. 1, includes the replacement of fixtures, accessories, wall finishes, partitions, flooring, and lighting in A-Building and J-Building restrooms. The restrooms will be shut down and under construction in the following sequence to keep impact to students, faculty and staff minimal.

J-Building Ground Level and 2nd Floor - Sept. 7 through Oct. 11
A-Building 1st and 2nd Floors - Sept. 7 through Oct.

Annual Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony on Main Campus
The college will hold its annual Sept. 11 memorial ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, outside the D-Building at Centennial Plaza at 8:45 a.m. The event is open to the public.
Units from area police and fire departments as well as military personnel will be in attendance. The ceremony will start promptly at 8:45 a.m.
A showing of the movie "In Memorium: New York City," will be shown with refreshments on the Main Campus Bridge following the ceremony. This event is sponsored by Campus Police, Environmental Health and Safety and Student Activities.

KK Building Demolition Sept. 9
In preparation for construction of the new Campus Center, the KK Building--one of the college's 40-year-old temporary buildings--will be demolished on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
Demolition begins at 8 a.m. This will have minimal impact to students, faculty and staff with the installation of a construction barrier fence blocking eight parking stalls to the north of the building through Sept. 11.

Annual Grundy Regional Job Fair Sept. 16 The 5th Annual Grundy County Regional Job Fair will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Saratoga School District 60-C, 4040 Division Street in Morris. Grundy Workforce Services is partnering with Joliet Junior College (JJC) to bring employers to employment seekers.

JJC Awards for Excellence Grant Applications Due Oct. 1
To encourage initiative and innovation at Joliet Junior College, the JJC Foundation has established the Awards for Excellence program. The Foundation will provide up to $50,000 annually ($25,000 each semester) to fund individual grants ranging from $100 to $5,000 for each selected project.
These grants are to enable faculty, staff and students to provide an extra margin of excellence by funding worthy projects, consistent with that mission of the college, for which funds are not available through usual college budgets. Deadline to complete the application for fall semester is Thursday, Oct. 1.

* The college has been notified that its Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) -Special Education degree has been approved by the Illinois Community College Board and forwarded to the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) for approval. Congratulations to Dean Bette Conkin, Professor Doreen Vieitez, Associate Professor Susan Krause, and Professor Barbara Biles.
* Congratulations to David Agazzi, vice president of administrative services, who was selected to present at the 27th Annual Conference of the Community College Business Officers (CCBO) in Palm Springs, Calif. in October. Agazzi will present on "Funding the Master Plan: A New Paradigm in Shared Responsibility."
