JJC Celebrates GED Graduates at 25th Annual Ceremony
One hundred and ten graduates were honored at the 25th Joliet Junior College Annual GED Recognition and Awards Ceremony, held on June 11 in the college's City Center Campus Ballroom. Sponsored annually by the JJC Division of Adult and Family Services (DAFS), Director of DAFS Dr. Terry R. Irby was mistress of ceremonies and provided welcome to all graduates and their families. Jennifer Miller, associate director for adult education and family literacy for the Illinois Community College Board gave congratulatory remarks, along with JJC President Dr. Gena Proulx, Dr. Dennis Haynes, JJC vice president of academic affairs, and Will County Executive Larry Walsh. Dr. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, Will County superintendent of schools, presented an award for the top GED score in Will County to Michael Garafalo of Shorewood. Students speakers were:
Barbara Younghusband (pictured left in photo above) of Manhattan. Youngsblood attended DAFS classes with her grandson William Fleming, who graduated with her.
Beatris Rodriguez of Plainfield. Rodriguez attended DAFS classes and also worked closely with the DAFS college transition center. She is now enrolled to attend college classes at JJC in the fall.
Guluzar (Jenny) Incekara (pictured right) of Minooka. Incekara attended classes through the GED program and also worked closely with the DAFS college transition center. Incekara is currently attending JJC and is deciding on deciding between an education or healthcare major. JJC to Receive $13 million from Gov. Quinn's Capital Bill
JJC will receive over $13 million from the $31 billion public works program Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law on Monday.
Along with road and bridge, transportation and environmental projects, higher education projects-including three at JJC-will receive a boost from the six-year program, called Illinois Jobs Now!, which will be funded through a combination of taxes, fees and the legalization of video poker.
The three JJC projects are:
* Temporary facilities replacement--$8,181,900 through the Capital Development Board (CDB)
* Infrastructure improvements to the veterans center--$100,000 through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO)
* Utilities renovation--$4,522,900 through the Capital Development Board (CDB)
"This is a long time coming," David Agazzi, JJC vice president of administrative services, said. "We've been waiting 10 years for these funds to materialize."

JJC Participates in AARP Diversity, Aging Conference

JJC Workforce Development Manager Kelly Lapetino and Susan Martin, a student in the college's Plus 50 Initiative, were guest speakers at the recent AARP Diversity and Aging in the 21st Century Conference held in Chicago on June 9.

Master Plan and Campus Construction Update
As part of the classroom remodeling project, work will begin on Monday, July 20, in the following C-Building rooms: C-2001, C-2002, C-2003, C-2004, C-2005, C-2006, C-2007, C-2014, C-2015, C-2016, C-2017, C-2018, C-2019, and offices C-2002B and C-2002C. Tribute to Men of Color Luncheon Honors Students

The Tribute to Men of Color lunch held on June 11 on the Main Campus honored three JJC students with scholarships
for their demonstrated academic achievement.
JJC students Andre Joachim, Anthony Morgan and Jeris Pendleton each received a scholarship.
To qualify, the students had to be enrolled in the college's Project Achieve/Student Support Services Program and demonstrate writing academic achievement, financial need, ambition, leadership, and postsecondary educational perseverance. Faculty, Staff Recognition
* Congratulations to Jami Boyd, manager, Workforce Development, who received the credential of Certified Workforce Development Profession (CWDP) from the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals. This certification is valid for three years. Boyd joins 1,294 CWDPs across the nation.
