Students Celebrated at Honors Event

HonorsGrad09
Six JJC students were each awarded $2,000 scholarships by Midwest Generation, LLC at the JJC Honors Program Graduation Celebration. Front Row - Ellwyn Bohnert, Joliet; Jillian Geagan, Frankfort; Allie Mahalik, Wilmington; Midwest Generation representative, Elsie Briette. Back Row - Midwest Generation representative Ron Daley; Christine Ruffatti, Gardner; Sean Hansen, Plainfield; and Honors Program Director Stacey Murphy.

The night before she gave the student speech to over 300 of her fellow classmates at the 2009 Joliet Junior College Spring Commencement Ceremony, Abbey Atkinson shared in a different academic celebration.

The Joliet native was honored at the college's Honors Program Graduation Celebration in May with several peers for her academic achievement while at JJC. Graduation Celebration is the culminating event to all the activities and work the program's nearly 80 members accomplished throughout the year.

Atkinson credits the honors program for fostering an atmosphere that promotes academic opportunity and challenge for students-certainly a must for Atkinson, whose dream job is to work at NASA developing the field of space flight exploration.

Six JJC Honors Program students were each awarded $2,000 scholarships by Midwest Generation, LLC. This year's recipients were Ellwyn Bohnert of Joliet, Aaron Criss of Bolingbrook, Jillian Geagan of Frankfort, Sean Hansen of Plainfield, Allie Mahalik of Wilmington, and Christine Ruffatti of Gardner.

JJC's Oldest Alumna Visits Campus, Cronin School

MarieGhilainJJC's oldest living alumna, 101-year-old Marie Ghilain, made a special visit to the college's Main Campus on June 23.

The trip was especially important for Ghilain because she also visited the Cronin School-a one-room schoolhouse that is preserved on campus-where she started her teaching career in 1928.

The summer heat wasn't enough to keep Ghilain, who was accompanied by her son Russ, from touring the renovated structure, where she said she taught 27 children during the 1928-29 school year, one year after graduating from JJC.

The nearly 145-year-old school house was moved to the Main Campus in 1987, where it has served as a living history museum. Originally located on Black Road, the Cronin School served Troy Township until January 1950. The effort to restore it was spearheaded by two former JJC agriculture professors.

Special Board Meeting Results

The Board of Trustees held a special meeting on June 29 to vote on reappointment of fiscal year 2010 grant-funded college employees as well as issues related to lack of state funding of several college programs.

The board approved the reappointment of grant-funded professional staff for FY10, as well as reappointment of employment opportunity grant program (EOGP) professional staff for FY10.

The board also voted to provide financial support through Dec. 31, 2009 to the Division of Adult and Family Services (DAFS) from the college's contingency fund so that it could continue normal operation through the fall semester. The DAFS is grant-funded and as of July 2, there is no confirmation of any state support for the next fiscal year.

"We are so appreciative that the JJC Board has agreed to carry DAFS grant-funded staff salaries for six months in hopes that the Illinois legislators will pass a budget that will fully fund the program," Daniel Kreidler, dean of community and economic development, said. "By doing so, the board has recognized the importance of the program and the community we serve."

In a speech to trustees, Director of DAFS Dr. Terry R. Irby said that there is a great need in the college's district for DAFS services, which include adult basic and secondary education and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.

She added that over 3,000 students enroll in DAFS programs annually, with around 600 students completing the college's GED program.

Interior Design Program Receives Accreditation

JJC's Interior Design Program recently received a five-year accreditation from the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), making it only the fourth accredited interior design or kitchen and bath curriculum in the state to receive this status.

This is the highest level of accreditation given by the NKBA.

"By having the JJC Interior Design program accredited with the NKBA, the graduate seeking interior design, kitchen or bath employment will have increased credibility as having graduated from a nationally-accredited program," Barbara Pergande, interior design professor and program coordinator, said.

Pergande added that JJC students will also benefit from the program's accreditation through opportunities to attend national NKBA conferences and Illinois chapter meetings.

Disney Workshop on Main Campus August 18

Disney Institute is bringing its renowned professional development program, the "Disney Keys to Excellence," to the area on August 18.

Sponsored locally by JJC in partnership with the Grundy County Chamber, the full-day event will give area professionals an opportunity to experience the business behind the Disney magic--proven strategies and best practices that are easily adaptable to their organizations.

The Disney Keys to Excellence workshop will be held at the Main Campus, T-Building Conference Center, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

"This is the only program that Disney Institute brings to the local business community," said George Aguel, senior vice president for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts who also leads the Disney Institute. "Participants from the area will discover Disney practices that they can incorporate into their own businesses. These strategies and tactics have been proven successful for more than 50 years."
