College Unveils New Logo

LOGO

The JJC Board of Trustees passed a measure to approve a new college logo at its June 16 meeting.

Launching today, the logo features the college's bell tower. A gift from alumni in 1969 to celebrate the opening of Main Campus, the bell tower was chosen to be the college's first symbol because it represents both the college's proud history and bright future as an educational resource.

The bell tower is currently located between the lake and E-Building on the college's Main Campus.

Together with the shield, the bell tower represents the longevity, strength, endurance and collegiate excellence of JJC.

According to the JJC Marketing and Creative Services Office, who designed the logo, the bell tower has a rich history connected with the college and the local community, and is a symbol of JJC alumni's dedication and support of the college.

Interesting facts about the bell tower:

* The bell was forged in 1872 in New York

* Its original home was the Will County Courthouse in downtown Joliet

* Alumni William Glasscock ('37), who was also the chair of the first JJC Board of Trustees, led the movement to bring the bell tower to JJC from the Will County Courthouse

* It was purchased by a group of alumni for $1,500 in 1969

* The bell weighs 1,500 pounds and the clapper weighs 50 pounds

Baseball Field to be Renamed After King

KingWhen JJC baseball players step on the diamond next year, they'll be playing on a field with a new, but familiar name.

At its June 16 meeting, the JJC Board of Trustees voted to rename the JJC baseball field Wayne L. King Jr. Field, after the college's longtime head baseball coach and director of athletics. King has been the baseball coach at JJC since 1985 and athletic director since 1995.

"I appreciate the support through the years I've been here. We've had some good players and good coaches over the years so that makes me look good," King said at the meeting. "We're very proud of moving (our kids) on to four-year schools. I think that's what we're here for."

Listen to Wayne King on WJOL 1340 on Thursday, June 18, at 8:20 a.m. with Scott Slocum.

The college hosted a three-day training for a statewide police mutual aid group on June 9, 10 and 11 at the T-Building.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System field force training included about 60 officers (including JJC officers) doing both classroom and outdoor hands-on sessions in the grassy area north of T-Building.

During the outdoor training, officers participated in simulated protests for training purposes.

JJC Awarded $145,800 Clean Energy Grant

JJC was recently awarded a $145,800 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to upgrade to a more efficient campus lighting system.

By replacing old 32 wattage lights with high efficiency 28 watt light bulbs in the upgrade, JJC will not only see improved lighting quality, but also reduced operating and maintenance expenses and saved energy, leading to less pollution in Illinois communities.

The project-which will upgrade lighting at the Main Campus, the Weitendorf Agricultural Education Center, North Campus, and City Center Campus-is expected to be complete by the end of this year.

JJC's move to embrace this initiative is just one of many sustainable measures the college has undertaken in the last year, including the facilities master plan, which has many sustainable elements and green initiatives.

Hieggelke, who led the team, was honored along with two colleagues Thomas L. O'Kuma of Lee College and David P. Maloney of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne in a ceremony in Denver.
