Master Plan and Campus Construction Update
As part of the classroom remodeling project, work will begin on the following rooms in J-Building on Saturday, June 6:
J-2004, J-2006, J-2008, J-2010, J-2012,
J-2065, J-2065A, J-2066, J-2067, J-2068, K-2011, and K-2013.
This work should be completed by the end of June. Part of the classroom remodeling involves replacing flooring, which requires a product that can create an odor.
After receiving some feedback during the fourth floor J-Building remodeling, the contractors will be using a different product, which should help lessen the odor produced during the procedure. Thank you again for your patience and your feedback. The college is working hard to minimize the disruption to your day-to-day activities.
If you have any questions, contact Facility Services at ext.2396.

Police Training on Campus June 9-11
The college will host a three-day training for a statewide police mutual aid group on June 9, 10 and 11 at the T-Building. The Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System field force training will include about 60 officers (including JJC officers) doing both classroom and outdoor hands-on sessions in the grassy area north of T-Building. During the outdoor training, there will be fog and smoke simulations and officers will be using inert training guns. There will also be simulated protests for training purposes. Signage will be posted in the area stating that there is ongoing police training. If you have any questions, please contact Campus Police at ext. 2234.

JJC Planetarium Puts Internet Mars Rumors to Rest
It's back! The biennial rumor that Mars will be bigger than the moon in August is once again racing through the Internet.
Although the new graphics are surprisingly better than in the past, there is still no truth in the message. Mars will never appear larger than the moon.
According to Art Maurer, Joliet Junior College planetarium director, this rumor got its start in August 2003 when Mars made its closest approach to the earth in 60,000 years. During that close approach, Mars was 34.6 million miles from the earth, but it still appeared as less the 1/72nd of the moon's size.
Mars is the only outer planet that we don't have a close approach with every year. Because of its orbital speed compared to the earth, we only "lap" it every 767 days. The photo above shows a view of Mars from the Hubble Space Telescope on June 26, 2001.
Our next close approach is on Jan. 29, when Mars will be 61.7 million miles away and will only appear about half as large as it did in 2003. The last close approach of Mars was on Dec. 24, 2007.
