Master Plan and Campus Construction Update
Parking Lot Construction Begins May 25
During summer 2009, the college will complete two parking projects to help alleviate issues associated with construction projects as part of the college's master plan. Phase One (May 25 - July 3) will involve the reconfiguration of North Lot 2, which is the student lot north of J-Building, and South Lot 1, which is the lot south of the C- and D-Buildings. Both lots will be closed during this time and will reopen on July 6.
Parking spaces for persons with disabilities currently located in North Lot 2 will be relocated to North Lot 1, the faculty/staff lot. Those spaces currently located in South Lot 1 will be relocated to South Lot 2. Phase Two (July 6 - August 21) will involve the reconfiguration of East Lots 2 and 3, which are east of the T-Building. Both lots will be closed during this time and will reopen on August 24. Parking spaces for persons with disabilities currently located in East Lots 2 and 3 will be relocated to the front rows of East Lot 4.
Campus Construction
The outdoor walkway between the B-Building and the V-Building is now closed for safety precautions as a new stairwell is built.
This construction will be completed as part of the Campus Center project and a temporary fence will be installed blocking off this sidewalk. Alternative routes will be clearly marked. Classroom remodeling construction began on the 4th floor of the J-Building on May 17. Part of this project will involve the removal of flooring. The college is working to control odor, and air monitoring will remain an on-going process. There will be additional classroom, hallway and office remodeling throughout the summer.
Again, JJC is making every effort to keep the campus safe during construction.

Wolves Take 4th at National Tourney in Texas
The JJC baseball team ended its season with a fourth place finish at the NJCAA Division III World Series held in Tyler, Texas.
The Wolves defeated Suffolk County Community College (NY) in the opening round of the tournament by a 3-1 score and gained another victory over Manchester CC (NH) by 10-6 score.
JJC dropped a 12-0 decision to Richland Community College (TX) and later was knocked out of the double elimination series with a 6-2 loss to Brookdale Community College (NJ).
The Wolves finished with a 41-16 overall record and a 14-1 N4C conference record this season. They earned the District B championship, Region IV championship, and the N4C conference championship.
In the past four years, JJC has finished with an 181-63 record with a national title and a second, third, and fourth place finish.
"I am very proud of this group of kids this season," head coach Wayne King said. "The program has been quite a success the past four years and looks to be very promising for next season as well."
King is set to be inducted into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in Grand Junction, Colo. at the NJCAA Division I World Series on Friday, May 22.

DeLaney Honored with Woman of the Year Award
JJC Board of Trustees Vice Chair Barbara DeLaney was honored as 2009 Woman of the Year by the Slovenian Women's Union of America (SWU), Branch 20, in Joliet on May 19.
DeLaney, of Crest Hill, has been a member of the organization for 15 years. In that time, she has taken part in a variety of activities with the group, chairing the SWU's scholarship committee, hosting monthly meetings, and supporting fundraising events, including bake sales, rummage sales, dances, and donations for raffles.
DeLaney is also a member of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce, Will County Farm Bureau and National Federation of Independent Business.
She has also been chairperson for the March of Dimes annual fundraiser and served on the Joliet Historical Museum Board. She is a family advocate for Habitat for Humanity.
DeLaney is a JJC alumna and was elected to the JJC Board of Trustees in 2007. She is serving her current term through 2013.

JJC to Host Free Wedding Flower Show June 7 JJC will host a wedding flower show on Sunday, June 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus. The show is free and open to the public. The show will feature bouquets for both the bride and her attendants, and will provide information on selecting a style that compliments the bride's dress and figure as well as color combinations for all gown colors.
Creative designs by Donna Theimer, JJC floral design instructor, and Linda Zombolas of Forever Flowers by Linda will be highlighted. Flower selections for all seasons will be shown. Though the program is free, the college is collecting nonperishable food items to donate to a local food pantry in conjunction with the event.
Those interested in attending are asked to bring two nonperishable food items to donate. The food collected at the event will be delivered to a local food pantry by a local Girl Scout troop from Minooka that will earn service hours for their assistance. JJC Expands Job Training Program
JJC will be part of a new effort to help workers age 50 and up, as the Plus 50 Initiative at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) expands the community college movement to help workers age 50 and over train for new jobs and sharpen their marketable skills. JJC will serve as a Learning Partner for neighboring Moraine Valley Community College, which will expand its efforts to help unemployed plus 50 workers who want to stay on the job. This partnership matches the nation's first community college with the second largest community college in Illinois. "With the high unemployment rates of 50+ individuals, the need to expand awareness of community colleges services to the 50+ community is greater now than ever," Kelly Lapetino, JJC workforce skills manager, said. Both colleges are expanding training and re-training opportunities for plus 50 students seeking to stay in the workforce.
The expansion pairs existing and more experienced Plus 50 colleges with dozens more community colleges that now become "affiliates" of the Plus 50 Initiative.
The help can't arrive soon enough. Baby boomers may face the steepest odds of any unemployed workers in the job market, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2008, laid-off workers over age 50 were out of work for 22.2 weeks, compared with 16.2 weeks for younger workers. When they land jobs, baby boomers typically experience a more significant drop in earnings than their younger counterparts. The Plus 50 Initiative began its efforts to improve course offerings for baby boomers in 2008 with 15 community colleges focused on learning, training and career development, and volunteering. The three-year project is sponsored by the AACC with a $3.2 million dollar grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies. 28th Annual JJC Alumni Brunch on June 7
JJC alumni, faculty, retirees, staff, and friends are invited to attend the 28th Annual JJC Alumni Brunch on Sunday, June 7, in the Renaissance Center Grand Ballroom, 214 North Ottawa Street, in Joliet.
This year, the Alumni Brunch will celebrate class reunions for the years 1959, 1969 and 1979 and JJC retiree and Foundation board member Richard Brandolino will be honored with the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award; Executive Director of the Will Grundy Medical Clinic and former JJC president J.D. Ross will be honored with the Susan H. Wood Hall of Fame Award; and Fine Arts Department Assistant Professor Tammy Perkins will be honored with the Faculty Prestige Award.
Johnnie Johnson, instructor in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department, was the Faculty Prestige Award runner up. The winner of the award is determined by students via open ballot.
The Alumni Brunch will begin at 11 a.m. with a champagne reception, followed at noon with a welcome message and brunch prepared by JJC Chef William Siska, his staff and students.
The program will begin at 1 p.m. Cost to attend is $30 per person and complimentary tours of the Joliet Area Historical Museum will be offered following the ceremony.

Faculty, Staff Recognition
* Congratulations to Dr. John Lyons, associate professor in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department, who recently published a book called "Teaching History Online," a concise reference guide to developing and using online resources in history teaching. Lyons also did a presentation on the book at the International Conference on College Teaching and Learning in Florida in April and received an Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology there.
* Congratulations to Rich McNeil, professor in the Computer Information and Office Systems Department, who will present his paper "Usage of the Internet and Various Internet tools to Improve the Learning of Marginal Students" at the Oxford Round Table in July.
